Brandon Herrera explained it quite well on one of his Darwin Awards videos that also featured Scott's RN-50 accident. Self-loading weapons have "less severe" catastrophic malfunctions because you have some chunk of the firearm's receiver when the gun does explode, compared to single shot firearms like the RN-50. That said and as what this video shows, it's still not a good day for whoever is having this happen in their face.

I think the next segment in this series, maybe a side quest, if you will, should be to build a .50bmg gun that can fire that spicy round. Since Brandon is making a .50 bmg Ak, Scott could build the most over built .50bmg. This being more of a side item to other videos and op round testing in other guns.

But the question then becomes: HOW overcharged? Because if you double load the primer and fill it to the brim with flash powder the M2HB barrel would be "a pencil barrel" by comparison to something that could handle it.

BMG+P? Yes, please do. BTW: there is a practical limit to the pressure that can be handled by just using a bigger chunk of metal... if you care if it works for more than 1-2 rounds. How about a .22 or .38
@mattmarzula
@mattmarzula 2 жыл бұрын
@@troybarnes473 nearly impossible for well built .22's because you simply can't put that much powder in them. Even level five Ramset blank cartridges won't really do much unless it's like a cheap Bearman Derringer pistol and you have a barrel obstruction. The gases will find the path of least resistance and just vent. Sometimes that results in the brass actually crushing inward away from the chamber. Now .38? I'll put it like this. Revolvers don't have the same pressure spikes as semiauto pistols. The cylinder gap would generally vent gases out the sides. Standard .38 SPL loads operate between 15,000-17,000 psi. Low pressure in the firearms world. .357 is significantly higher at 29,000-39,000 psi. I've seen a Smith and Wesson 686 with two full house .357 mag bullets stacked in the barrel behind a squib load with barely a budge. Firearm instructors... Generally, a firearm is designed to withstand normal and even over pressure ammo for thousands of rounds. But case dimensions and space available for powder in straight wall pistol cartridges generally won't exceed the construction of a well-built firearm. Especially a revolver with a stainless steel chamber. So in short... That's a stupid suggestion.

I am just guessing, but maybe Serbu sponsored these videos. And i can understand why; the initial explosion made Serbu's .50 cal look really bad. These last two videos proves that Serbu's design is just as rugged and safe as the "original" .50 cal - the Barett. If i was Serbu i would donate both guns, the ammo and probably a decent amount of money for this video. Since its is coming from Kentucky himself, who was the victim of the explosion it carries much more weight. And by letting Kentucky post it it will reach most of those who saw the original video. If i'm right, good move mr. Serbu - no disrespect intended.

1 minor detail to remember, the Barrett is Recoil operated, you can see in the slo-mo the barrel going backward slightly which pushes the bolt back, similar to how most modern handguns work. Since it's not Gas Operated, the pressure isn't getting vented at all, which might not be a very good thing in this case! Im super interested though about what other calibers will do in an overcharge! Like 5.56 I would say test it on a GM6 Lynx, as the Long Recoil action is theoretically very safe, but you can buy a house or a new truck for how much one of those cost. Even the magazines cost hundreds of dollars each, LOL. Please don't blow one of those up!

this is not the video to prove the safety of the RN50 that video was the orginal that explained just how spicy the round was to cause that to happen ie the orginal video. guns can blow up if they are pushed to far the debate is on what kind of failure is better semis are gonna ballon and throw shrapnel randomly. breach loading on the other hand has less shrapnel but its directional right toward you.

@@aikidodude05 Yes, but the point of it is. It's a big round, going big kaboom, in a big way. Any functional weapon in that situation becomes an incredibly dangerous, design be damned. @@justusbladetooth your missing the trees for the forest and yes i said that way on purpose. I didnt want to have to do it but KB test while its a vaild test is very inaccurat because its not simulating actually shouldering to fire essentially the the gun and torso are positioned in a way that the person would be fired at retention which gives a massive target. secondly on inspecting it he said there was damage to the chest and he showed it but he didnt have any shrapnel to dig out and something to note here is that the damage is in a slash and in the slowmo we can see chunks of the gun actually falling against the chest. so was it actually hit or did say part of the barrel ding it when it bounced back into the dummy. then the shoulder what matters here is the size its tiny compared to what came off the RN50 its the size of your nail were on the RN the pieces were the size of your thumb be cause in failing it will shear off the those big ears and because its a breach loaded its coming straight back toward you. what people are talking with semi vs breach on failure and safety is that the nature of if a semi auto means that instead of the Directional explosion you get from the RN50 alof ot the power is reduced from the whole bolt and spring making the failure into a grenades instead of a shotgun. Ie your gonna have a bad day but you have a better chance at not at reduced injuries.
@aikidodude05
@aikidodude05 2 жыл бұрын
@@justusbladetooth iangerous yes but no the design actualy does have an effect again. see when a semi auto/ full auto fails the bolt is designed to move and has a spring so you already have something absorbing some of the blast redirecting it sideways as all that force is going to go the easiest way ie grenade instead of shotgun. breachloaders on the other hand dont have moving parts it has to act like a cannon when it fails it goes off like shot gun everything comes straight back at the shooter. Im not shiting on breach loaders they are fantasic, im just sick of this well a semi failing would be just as bad a breechloader failure and that's just not true

@@shootthemoon6072 If scott bought the slap rounds from the used market , than i would 100% guarantee more are out there floating around. Exact reason why serbu should recall the rn-50 and change the design or just stop selling a rifle that under bad circumstances will detonate and harm the shooter

I think I'm crying.... Anyways, I think this is a sort of redeeming video for Mark Serbu. He caught a lot of (undeserved) flak about the safety of his rifle when you had your accident, and many said the design was unsafe and that a Barrett or McMillan or whatever other rifle wouldn't have blow up. Well I think this video ought to shut those guys up... I doubt your face would've fared well if you had it placed on that Barrett's cheek rest, right? (edit: hehehe I wrote the comment just after seeing the kaboom, and immediately afterwards you mention the face stuff...)

I don't think a McMillan can take that much pressure. Never doubted Serbu myself tbh, but that's just me. But I am left wondering: which gun are those round for?

Did we watch the same video? The RN50 through a heavy metal cap and shrapnel directly into Scott and his ballistic gel head, and the Barrett didn't transfer much of anything. That Serbu is a death trap.

@@gabrielemagnabosco8926 McMillan is a heavy bolt gun... the rear of the chamber ahead of the bolt has a vent hole like most other smaller bolt guns... if they have a case head sep, they tend to vent that off and not blow up, not saying they cant but have more features to reduce such an issue. When I had a Barret in Iraq... I dont recall seeing such a vent in the chamber area.

My Father told me to only do things that I can make mistakes at and be able to do them again. He was quite the adventurer. He was a pilot, but not a parachutist. He was always irritated that I have an infinity for big bore guns. I never quite figured it out until your accident of unknowingly hot round. Huge lesson that I should have already known is to load your own when it comes to ammo that has the potential for such mistakes or sabotage resulting in certainty of pressure way beyond what the rest of the design can tolerate. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Thanks to your Father for saving your life, as my Father also saved mine a few times it seems.
