Insurers done their job by the book. It's not a mistake. Original Collision service procedures by Ford state any hit that compromise the steering rack by any way, the rack itself MUST BE REPLACED with NEW and only a OEM one. Just imagine what force is needed to bend the tie rods. The bent rod ends transfer this force into the rack. Even if the steering rack continues to function properly there's one catch. The all electric power steering has a doohickey that a hydraulic rack doesn't. This thing is called rubber coupler and it's meant to break and separe the electric motor from steering input in case of ELECTRIC MOTOR SEIZURE, which would cause blocked steering. That's why they totaled the car. Just look at the price of brand New OEM electric steering. And the money the insurance have to pay for labour to replace the rack. And the all the cosmetic problems. The car was reasonably totaled. But the more important thing is the steering system has now cracked rubber coupler that could separate 200mi down the road if you drive over a larger pot hole. When this separation happens Granma loses power steering. Granma would panic and depends of the circumstances, bad thing could happen. 🤔
