I Bought a Refurbished NES From DK Oldies - This is What They Sent - This is my first time buying something from DKOldies. I wanted to do a video on my experience in case my viewers are curious. Customers should pay close attention to the listing so they know what they're getting (and what they're not). And customers may not get a high level of refurbishing... but experiences will vary.

@@i_like_lemons I honestly don't know what some sellers are thinking. I recently commissioned two modded Game Boys from an eBay seller (and they had lots of great reviews and had been around a few years). Both Game Boys I received had issues and needed to be sent back to fix. The seller was very responsive and quick, and paid for all the shipping, but things such as cleaning the button membranes were simply not on his radar screen. He also overlapped Kapton tape over one of the d-pad contacts. He clearly wasn't trying to cheat me in any way--he just didn't seem to have a detail-oriented mindset.

@@manifaction777 That's actually a quite interesting thing there. Is the NES even compatible with RFI standards to be allowed to be sold without that shield? To my mind, it's old enough that I'm guessing it would actually be very noisy (as in rf noise) without it and since DK is an actual company, they're required to make sure the devices they sell are compliant with current rfi limitations. I know it's not exactly enforced on the second hand market (heck it's barely enforced on new stuff) but still.

I'm old school. I've purchased broken NES's for cheap and for parts and learned how to repair them from scratch so I never ever pay retail for these systems. I clean them inside and out as well as the games honest and old fashion and of course over the years I have traded and sold them for fair price especially trading them with other collectors for this and that and it's worked out well for me. I've learned how to refurbish my own stuff in cartridge based consoles and the main thing I learned is being clean. Of course advanced issues are with capacitors and some minor soldering but for the most part the basic science is keeping your console clean and grim and dust free. Simple as that as you showed us on your video. Great Video! A++++ Thumbs Up and shared. : )

By the way, just a word of advice, be carefull with magic eraser if you're cleaning game contacts they strip off a lot of the protective coating on em, same with brass polish. Anyways if you really want spotless pins do use brass polish but be weary of how fast it strips material and don't overdo it, use a cue top and just gently rub a couple of times and it'll be fine.

Protip! You can typically fix the poor pin contact issues by slightly moving the front left or right corner of the cart while it's pressed down. That changes the seating on the pins and can usually get the cart working. Credit for that to an old rinrygamegame video where she showed that trick. 10:10 I was actually thinking about the lockout chip earlier in the video, It sucks that someone had done that, because yes it can help get a game to detect on the front loader consoles because it won't need all of the 72pins anymore BUT on games that released later on the nes near end of life have copy protection to detect if the lockout is missing. Since that leg was snapped off badly and not cut at the bottom or unsoldered and lifted it can't really be fixed meaning the awful refurbished console from DK Oldies won't be compatible with all nes games.

Steve says repeatedly throughout the video “That’s not too bad” but when it comes down to it, you shouldn’t be paying that much money for “not too bad”. And when all factors are combined it becomes really bad. I would expect that paying this much for anything that it would be cleaned and properly working. DK is looking more and more like a scam to me which is very sad considering what they are trying to accomplish.

Selling the products at a high price is not the problem I have with DKO, the problem I have is the security they give customers that they are refurbishing everything to back up why they price is so high. Yeah there are some people who just find their youtube shorts and get them hyped for nostalgia and they buy from them on a whim, but some people think that with a warranty and "refurbish" in the name of the product that it suffices the higher price.

i think there’s a market and i might even say a need for premium priced consoles that have been properly checked out and cleaned which fully itemized changes and repairs and detailed descriptions from experts on the systems. i dont think there’s anything wrong with paying ‘over market’ for a verifiably better product. whatever this company is doing is clearly not that.

Hi, I currently have an NES that I bought from eBay and it came with a new pin connector and everything. I got Mario/Duck Hunt with it and it worked. I also got 2 copies of Mario 3. One of them works but the bottom of the screen glitches out and the other one just doesn’t work and I’m trying to clean it but it’s still not working. I was wondering if this is a common problem for Mario 3 or NES games. Are the pins not reading the game or something? I also am using a AV to HDMI converter, so I don’t know if that’s causing some problem.

I was typing out a comment pointing it out because that cartridge made me raise an eyebrow too. But you can see at around 15:18 there is a "Nintendo" and a "1988" printed on the PCB. So I did a little digging. I found a reddit post that shows this same game with a nearly identical PCB. The square blobs, placement of the SMD components, the shape of the edge contacts, the layout of the traces, etc. all leads me to believe this is a legitimate game. I never knew Nintendo actually made games that had the bootleg-blobs but apparently they did several, mostly for pack-in titles (So they could be made cheaply) especially around this time period (During the late-80's chip shortage). It was neat to learn about that today. TL;DR - At least DKOldies didnt make Steve refurbish a bootleg cartridge. It looks weird but surprisingly that cart is Nintendo-made. He was still overcharged, though.

Many years ago our old NES ended up in a plastic bin and stored under our back deck of all places. I decided after several years to get it out and play it. Well I went under the deck and pulled out the bin which over the years had filled with water and submerged the nes. This means not only submerged, but countless winters the nes would have been frozen in ice. So being nostalgic and hating to lose a piece of my childhood, I took it apart, dried it out with a hair dryer and not a word of a lie, it still worked! Hard to get going, but it worked.

I scrolled through the comments and I'm honestly surprised that nobody else has picked up on that SMB/Duck Hunt bootleg PCB. No CIC chip, no mask ROMs, just 4 chips covered in the black shmoo usually used to prevent reverse-engineering. The shell of the cartridge appears to be legit, it's a Canadian shell with French added on the rear and matching designations to my genuine cart. Which leads me to believe that this game was opened at some point (not necessarily by DKOldies) and had it's original PCB replaced with this bootleg board. I'm not implying that DKOldies intentionally swapped or knowingly sold a bootleg game, but this would have been caught if they had actually opened the cart and cleaned it in a way that "refurbished" implies.
