Tighten up the fan belt which is casing the squeal. Give it an oil and filter change and put in a bottle of STP, which will improve the oil pressure.

Welcome back lad, the wait was worth it and I'm happy that you're in better health. I've been recently to a car show and between the many wonderful cars I saw an all white P6 series I 2000 which had the 2.0 I4, it was a beautiful car to look at in person. My father recalls seeing a lot of them back in the day but they have sadly since rusted away probably but this one was lovingly restored by it's owner who was an elderly gentleman.

First, I wish you continued health improvement. You are correct that having a project nearby will likely speed your recovery. I do remember this car and glad to see you get it. David is a great helper. The engine sounded steady when cranking as though there are no bad valves or dead cylinders. Before condemning the engine I'd change the oil and make sure it isn't running too rich which will wash down the rings. It also seemed to smoke the most when letting off the throttle which might just be valve seals. (everyone has an opinion.... I know. Lol). Best of luck from Kansas City USA

Hello Jeff yes we have done the mixture and we want to get the air filters on soon as that won't help but I do think it is a very worn out engine. Hopefully I can gather the finds to get a nice 4.6 as I have some plans brewing as for what I am going to do with the car but we shall see!

Welcome back, Sheldon, that looks like a nice one. When I was buying, and running P6B's, many years ago, Tobacco Leaf was my least favourite colour, reluctantly buying even the good ones. At least yours doesn't have the Tobacco Leaf / Cream Cloth interior that two of mine had. 30 psi is good oil pressure on tick over, but 1000 rpm is way too high, even for an auto. It will eventually damage the transmission and driveline. The gauges are all designed to have the needle central when at warn tick over and half full fuel tank. I used to run mine at a warm tick over speed of around 500 - 550 rpm for my 3500S models and 600 - 650 rpm for the auto's, even running on a points distributor. I'd have the static timing at 6 deg BTDC with a Sparkrute electronic ignition, and nearer 8 running on points using 4 star, or unleaded fuel. It needs properly setting up. You'll get similar weak carb breathing if the static timing is out, and a high tick over could be to raise the gauge pressure and stop a flickering oil light.

Hi Sheldon good to see you back and you've got to the bottom of your health problem , original air box etc will make it run better along with some decent quality fuel and Redex type additive to clean any built up crap in the fuel lines etc i went the extra mile and put new plugs and heavy duty leads electric fuel pump electronic ignition with a Bosch coil new fuel line from the pump to the carbs with only 1 filter needed before the pump set the tickover to 900 rpm and it runs a dam site better than it did , they do take a while to warm that ally v8 soon gets rid of the heat . Good luck with the car and your health .

We did put some fresh petrol but the thing really does need a run out as it has not gone anywhere really in a long time! We did add a bunch of redex to the tank and that has helped clear it out but if that does not sort the ring problems we will swap the motor. We wanted to do a compresstion test but the spark plug socket was to fat to fit!

Add about a pint/0.5L of Carlube ATF-U or NAPA MVA ATF to the engine oil, like your mate suggested use ATF in the carb dashpots as well. You'll be surprised the difference the ATF in with the engine oil makes! I use 0.5L each time i change the oil/filter and top up with normal oil to the correct level, keeps things moving and clean, frees sticky piston rings and hydraulic tappets, revives (but won't repair) and conditions rubber seals and generally gives the engine back a bit of what's been lost over the years. Oh yeah, get those carbs balanced! Works wonders! Also the timing can be either 6deg or 10deg on an SD1 engine, depending on what year it was made so try both to see where it runs best. Good luck with it!

Glad to see the SD1 still in the background. My dad’s 1995 2.0t Saab died sadly, but has been replaced with a 2004 9-5 Aero estate which I absolutely love ❤. OK so she’s not a Rover, but she just oozes character. I reckon she’s a future classic. I suspect your lovely « new » P6 just needs a good « italian tune up » 😂😂 Black smoke sounds like a carb problem. Yea rebuilt quite a few of those 3.5 litre engines looking at that I would do a compression test however they also liked wearing out cam shafts which can lead to thinking the engine is worn out so I would check that out and the hydraulic lifters also test the SU carburettors are set right and also as inlet manifold leaks are quite common so vacuum test the system . Hopfully this info helps.

Just a tip never push break pedal to floor with an old master cylinder, think about it ! The piston is so used to going only so far in the bore for yrs on end , there could be corrosion gunk in the bores where the piston never travels , so when you push your pedal to the floor you increase the chance of the piston hitting this area destroying the seals in your master cylinder giving you a spongy pedal worse than before . IMHO its best to pump the pedal slowly and only half way better still vacuum bleed, it elliminates this problem

You'll not get great suck from one carb, they go to common plenum, block one all air goes through other! 35 psi hot at idle is normal for these old v8. You'll need to fit air filter box with element for it to run right, it needs the airfilter as the carbs jetted for use with original filter. Be way too lean without.
