@@tomvandongen8075 I ended up selling the 1080 with the oem box and everything for 400 USD in the GPU crisis back then. I only have a 1080p monitor at 60 hz. I sold it to someone for 400 + there gtx 1060 6 gig cause I only play like 3 games.I use an RX 6600 now which competes with the rtx 3060 but it was $150 off so it was %$219 with 2 free games, one I didnt care about called callisto protocol but came with dead island 2 which is an okay "meh" game. But when you turn vsync on to lock 60 fps the card only pulls like 45 watts of power and im locked at 60 fps in all games I play

I was thinking of building a SteamOS game console with mine laying around. I messed with tweaking it a bit but got impatient so I set it aside but have changed GPUs since then. I think it would be an amazing 1080p/1440p card with FSR scaling to 4K with a V64 BIOs and some undervolting/OC! I could have sold mine for $800 but decided not to in case I found a use for it because it's probably my favorite AMD GPU I've owned.

Bought my Vega 56 at the end of the previous mining crash for $200 (i flashed it with a 64 bios and undervolted/OC'd the HBM for MASSIVE performance improvements) and sold it during the last mining boom for $700. Just on stock bios, settings 165W seems ok in temps and fans speeds, but it's hot in Melbourne today so I had a desk fan running beside me. If the fan annoys me, I'll look into undervolting. Looks like current AMD drivers let's you choose to undervolt from the software in Windows...

Their price at their launch was high and they under-performed until the drivers matured a year or so after launch, the V56 went from lagging behind the 1070 at launch to regularly beating it out in games years later. I upgraded my 580 to a V56 since I was on a 1440p monitor and they dropped the price of Vega in the spring of 2019 significantly. It was great and held up well until I got a 3080 in spring of 2021. I think people at 1080p with a 570 or 580 didn't see the price worth paying and they just held out another gen, especially with their drivers getting better over time too compared to their nvidia counterparts.

I have one of these Vega56 since 2019, I found the best performance is whenever the card was under 70 Celsius. No amount of over/underclock would give as best an impact as just cranking the fan curve. That 8GB of VRAM really does keep it running well under 1080p. I doubt I'll sell it when I buy a newer card, its gonna run the 4k TV I'm setting up in my lounge.

I used to use it with a 1440p display with great success before moving to two ultrawide 1440p displays stacked which is still does a fantastic job with. At this point I'm just waiting for graphics card prices to become more competitive again, or for this card to be incapable of doing what I want.

Another nice video! I really hope that you make a follow up with undervolting+overclocking the card as it helped them a lot back in the day. Vega 56/64 biggest problem was the 1070/1080 in my opinion. They offered similar performance but the Nvidia cards consumed considerably less power and, especially at the beginning didn't have driver issues like the Vega. In my country(Greece) people for some reason are a bit sceptical about the Vega family of cards so both 56 and 64 cost around 100 to 120€ as there is little demand for them after the mining crash. On the other gad, 1070 and 1080 could cost much more, 130-140€ is a regular price for the 1070 (usually 150€ as well) while the 1080 goes for around 170-180€ . After some good searching i found for my brother a 100€ Asus ROG STRIX 1070 and just the other day for 115€ a Founder's Edition which I will keep for a while for my secondary PC.

RandomGaminginHD : Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that was first shown back in 2011 on E3. Its game engine was developed from 2010-2012. Game design was finished in 2014 and then put on a shelf. Games on engines from that era were basing completely on DX 9.0c from WinXP era. The same was for DX 11 API in Win 7 era. They only liked 1-2 cpu fast cores and linear frequency on GPU-s to be as high as possible. Besides fast GPU core and GPU memory clocks only the number ROP-s was what mattered. So, if you have GPU core running in between 1600 - 2000 MHz, have 128 ROP-s, 256-bit memory bandwidth and at least 18 GH/T GDDR6 this will run with the highest possible FPS. Radeon 7 and Vega 64 cards were more of a Texture crunching GPU-s with large memory busses, large number of TMU-s and relatively slow memory frequencies...but they needed them being filled by ASYNCHRONUS COMPUTING was to be utilized properly....which we all know that still in praxis doesn't exist because true DX 12 API based games still don't exist and rung through an empty DX 12 API to be computer in a SYNCHRONUS WAY in the back via DX 11 API.

Happy with both but the 56 was struggling to get 144fps on MWII comp settings without FSR and the 1% lows were tangible I'm most games. There was a full month where an MWII update caused a failure to boot the game at all for Vega cards so I knew it was time to upgrade after that. When these cards were new the '56 didn't perform that much better than a 6GB GTX 1060 and were hot, noisy and inefficient. They came into their own later on with driver improvements and overclocking but prices never really dropped to a level that made them particularly attractive on the used market. The Vega 64 was an even bigger dud.

Because they try to send the air out the back of the card, I suspect that blower style cards might actually have a slight edge in cooling performance in cases with poor ventilation. For me that usually means OEM cases, especially low profile ones. Of course, that doesn't stop them from being noisy.

The original reference design V56 are the best when it comes to memory OC, as those were using Samsung HBM and can be flashed with 64 bios. MSI AirBoost Vega 56 exclusively uses Hynix memory, as it's a reference clone and cannot be flashed. I was using a watercooled ref. 56 for 1440p gaming until recently and with some optimization (powerplay tables) I got it to around 200W ASIC pwr draw under load, 1560-1590Mhz sustained, aswell as 1145Mhz HBM clocks, which provided a large performance increase. Cards that can't flash 64 bios may be able to achieve higher memory clockspeeds by using the "AMD Memory Tweak Tool" and slightly relaxing the timings.

The drivers are more often than not the culprit with GCN 5. The hardware itself is actually fairly overpowered for what it was, but it relied a ton on drivers for things to run properly on it. It's a shame that AMD all but gave up on Vega and only very well optimised DX12 titles seem to be able to showcase its true potential...6 years on

@lennard9331
@lennard9331 Жыл бұрын
@@wayland7150 yeah, they run a bit better on Linux thanks to the fact that contributing to code to the driver is easier there. Sadly, even that isn't enough to save it, as GCN in general requires astonishing amounts of effort in driver development and AMD has all but ignored GCN 5 since it was by far the worst selling iteration of the architecture. I believe the major issue was the front end and the way the load was distributed among shaders. GCN had shaders arranged in groups of 4, which was extremely efficient when things were optimised for it and every CU was fed properly, but sadly, what happened more often than not was that the card would show 100% utilisation, but half the shaders would be sitting there, doing nothing because they weren't being fed. Vega basically aimed for the moon with the 4096 shaders the Vega 64 had, but completely fumbled itself when it came to software optimisations.

You should use GPU-Z in your video's to show driver version, core and memory clocks it also has ASIC Quality in the advanced tab drop down, that will give us the quality of the samples you use if the card supports it, there is lots of info in GPU-Z that i think might add a little more depth when demonstrating gpu's.

The blower style fan indicates that you have the extremely overclockable memory. Flashed with a Vega 64 BIOS and undervolted while overclocked gains a MASSIVE amount of performance on these cards. I bought the Air Boost OC version of this card new years ago... My worst graphics card purchase ever. When I bought it, there weren't many reviews on Newegg. After my struggle with this specific model as the months wore on, I went back to Newegg to find many more reviews. Not good ones. Frequently crashed. Upping the powerlimit, undervolting, and lowering the clock speeds helped, but it was always a liability. I always regretted not waiting just one more month and getting a 5700 XT when it launched. But today, I'm a proud owner of a reference AMD 6800 that is rock solid. :)

The MSI "Air Boost" was the brand of Vega 64 that I got about 4 years ago. It worked fine (i.e. stable) once I got an undervolt and aggressive fan setting to manage the heat, but the noise was a deal breaker for me. Besides being a space heater, it was like running a hair dryer that I could still hear even when gaming with headphones. Even woke up my wife one night. Finally got fed up with it after only 6 months and replaced it with a pricier GTX 2070 Super, which in turn I just recently replaced with a 6800xt. I never looked back until a couple of months ago when I dusted the old Vega 64 off the shelf and replaced the blower with an old Morpheus II. What a difference it made. I never would have gotten the 2070S if I had went this route years ago. The old girl still holds up pretty well with all my games.
