I still have my 1969 D18 I bought new. It’s as clean today as when I bought it. Only thing it’s ever Needed was refretting. It just sings.

Wow, this turned out SO much better than when you picked it up. It really wasn’t playable. Glad you tried to keep it as original spec as possible. The CF rod makes sense. Great idea!

Great job of restoring the D-35. I had my 74 D-35 re-fretted a while ago, along with some other work. I bought it at Chuck Levin's, brand new, many years ago and it was wonderful bringing it back to life. It, of course, isn't iconic like your Brazilian, but it is like a dear old friend to me.

I went down a similar path. Picked-up a 73 Indian Rosewood D35, then had my ace luthier do a neck reset, new frets, new bridge, saddle, nut and pick guard. Why? That gave me a great sounding older D35 that plays now better than new. I also had him put in a K&K Pure Mini pickup. Whoever gets your D35 is really going to enjoy it. Very nice indeed.

Wow this brought back memories and has got me wanting one again. My first really nice guitar was a 1968/69-ish Martin D-35 just like this one. I loved that guitar, and as a youth pastor I would take it to camps to provide worship music. Due to financial needs I had to get rid of it while at seminary in Ft Worth, TX. I really would want another one at some point. Thanks for sharing all your wisdom, talent, and passion with us.

Brazilian rosewood definitely isn't comparable to anything else only Brazilian Kingwood is at the same level but it's also so rare. Congrats Jeremy!

Jeremy, it's great that you bought that '69 D-35 and took the time to get it sorted out, and I'm sure that it will go a nice home. After I bought my CS-Bluegrass-2016 I stopped worrying about getting any of the BRW Martins. Keep up the good work that you are doing, very nice video!

Now I don’t feel so bad spending $400 to fix and rehab my 2010 D-18. It looks and plays perfect now and it has that magical 10+ years of age on it that makes the sound so much fuller/ better.

Nice restoration moves on a treasure. Some say Indian Rosewood equals Brazilian. There is no equal to the brilliance of Brazilian. Which is why they sell for far higher prices. Not that everyone wants that sound...but when you do, this it it.

I bought a d-35 new in 2006. It's a 2005 and of course it's east indian back and sides. It's sound is getting better each year. I'm a rhythm player at church and it is wonderful.

I did the reverse of that trick with the carbon fiber rod with a neck I built for an electric a few years ago. I got a bunch of surplus CF tubing for building kite frames from a local hobby shop (for free!) and since it was .375" diameter with a .125" through hole, it had a bit more flex than I was comfortable with. I put equal size brass rod in the hole with epoxy, left it overnight, and the flex was gone.

In today’s prices and Market-$1000 was pretty great low price to pay for all the Repairs done on that Martin. Nice Video-Work done looked real nice. I was heavy into old Vintage Martins in Early mid 80s but almost all needed neck-sets. When I started picking up old 30s-early 1960s Gibsons. Rarely did they need a Neck Re-set. And the adjustable T Rods were a plus. I became more a fan of the old Gibsons-Still am. 🇺🇸

I´m very lucky with an amazing sounding 71 D35, which did not even need a neck-reset until now and the bridge is still original, not shaved. I have played Bluegrass with it all over the place and recorded with it many time ever since 1974

Great video and nice work “reconditioning” the D35. It looks and sounds great and I think your asking price is fair - especially with the work you put into the instrument. I’ve owned a D28 since 1973 and never knew anyone , personally , who played a D35 until 1989. When I was younger - everyone wanted a Martin D28 - especially if you were into bluegrass. I’ve owned a number of guitars over the years and Martin remains my favorite guitar company.

My brother has a great early 70s D28, better sounding than most D28 I know, but still, I prefer my 71 D35 for Bluegrass!

I've played a D-35 for years. I added a D-18GE, recently, and love it. One of these days, I'll have to get a D28. I love the balance and clarity of the 28. :)

To me D35's are the best rhythm guitar ever made. Nothing sounds like them. Nothing. When it comes to the D35 Brazilian vs East Indian rosewood, there is a vast difference in how they sound from instrument to instrument and year to year. I personally prefer the Indian rosewood models. Even though, your guitar sounds great.

I build guitars and have never found that brazilian rosewood is necessarily better tha Indian. In fact, it's more brittle on average. I believe that there is more of a difference from guitar to guitar than between the use of these two woods.

my humble opinion as well. if you cant get there with good indian rosewood it just isn’t going to matter. if ebony went to heavy CITES restrictions, all the fanatics would buy les pauls and the price would go up 10,000%.

I agree. I have an Indian Rosewood 1971 D-35 and have compared it to two Brazilians, each was distinctive. I like mine.

@@jan_phd Same here, 1971 D35, fantastic guitar with its own, very recognisable sound. Some people told me even that they knew I was in the building because they recognised the sound of my 71 D35... Funny. We play and love Bluegrass

Very similar story here. I bought one of the last Brazilian D28s made in 1969. Got it used in 1972 for $400 by luck because I didn’t know Brazilian v whatever back then. Had the saddle reset and white edge bindings replaced. Otherwise all original as far as I know. Still a gem. Your 35 looks and sounds great. Worth 7 in my view - and double that in a few years as a classic.

One of the Martins in my collection is a 1967 Martin D-35 that I purchased new in that year. It's a wonderful guitar. I have D-28's to compare it to and it does hold its own. The 1969 model has the large rosewood bridgeplate. '68's had a small rosewood bridge plate and 67's and earlier had a small maple bridgeplate. Most earlier ones had the "Pat. Pend. USA' marked Grover tuning machines. I love them all. This is a very interesting video. Thanks!

I had a 68 D-35S for a few years. Then my guitar shop got a 1969 D-35 that a professional turned in. I could not believe the tone of the 69D-35 and traded in the 68. Yes the bigger bridge plate is in the 69, but it had a better tone. Do not know if the S makes a difference but my luthier said that the 69 had been played hard and that is the reason for the superior tone.

I've got a 1983 150th anniversary D35. The braces had been scalloped and I eventually scalloped them a little more Including the upper X braces. That was after Jay Rhinnes had re fretted and did a neck reset. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I did play a 69 D35 with Brazilian and it was awesome

I bought one new for $600 out the door in 1969. Stupidly sold it a few years later. I have always regretted that. I do remember that tone tho!

I dropped $2k on a 1970 D12-35 and spent another $1300 on repairs - new nut and saddle, new pickguard, neck reset, reglue of binding. Worth every penny. It "might" have some Brazilian panels - the wings on the back don't match the center piece.

Hey Jeremy, I grew up less than an hour from Nazareth, PA, but could never find a Martin guitar that I connected with and I’ve always felt like a turncoat, because I’ve always purchased Taylor Guitars. I just got a Martin 000 28 Modern Deluxe and I am so happy with it. This has nothing to do with your video but since you’re a Martin guy, I thought you would appreciate it.

I saw my 1st D-35 in about 1971 at Chicago Music Exchange. It was a 12 fret, slot-head 12 string D-35. It was the most beautiful guitar I had ever seen, locked up in a glass case and untouchable by me, a mere pissant with empty pockets. At the time I had a cheap (West) German Framus 12 string, a real bundle of feces over all. Barely playable even had I known how ( I didn't by any standard ). Fast forward a long time and a whole career and I own a couple of nice instruments, including a D-35. It is still the most beautiful guitar I have ever seen. Oh yea: couple of years ago I found an identical Framus 12 string to the one I had in the late 1960s on CL and bought it. Restored it and did a neck reset to make playable, easy with the bolt on neck. It is a bit better than the one I had then but is still just a chrome plated tu*d like the first one. But the D-35 is an angel with wings on her back. ps: I keep the Framus out and usually hanging near the D-35 so I can see both and still will play the Framus once in a while. I reflect on the fact that I have the great fortune to be able to care for and enjoy these awesome instruments for a finite and temporary period of time as with all lives and hope future caretakers will enjoy and care for them as I have. They have helped me find much joy and continue to help me fulfill an important part of my life: Music. I believe you see your calling as doing that on a larger scale. Bravo Jeremy!

I appreciate your reflections on your experiences…I recently picked up a 1967 Framus Texan 12 string ( it’s the rarer blond top ) . It is MINT. I did a few tricks with the bridge/saddle for better tone, recreated it’s chrome nut with a bone version (also did the same with the upper string guide ) , and did a CF support rod to the inside ( light , string , inconspicuous ) from the neck block to the tail. It’s a cannon. Like alot of economy brands, there are bad ones and very good ones. I got lucky and mine was BEAUTIFULLY built. It looks 2 years old, not 55! People can’t believe it, and I’ve only got $250 into it. Thanks for sharing, and stay safe!

I’ve had Martins since my D-18 bought used in 1969- back when guitar repair was a black art and even Martin didn’t offer non-warranty repair. I’m now down to just 2, a D-18 and a D-15s. Over the years I had a number of Martins, some beautiful playing guitars and a couple of disappointments. I just sold a 1989 D-45 bought new but plagued with a number of issued probably from not being played enough- 2 neck resets, bindings coming unglued, severe bowing of the top complete with a cracked brace, bridge replacement, I finally had to let it go. But like the featured D-35 in this video, I had a 1969 Brazilian D-28s, the last of the legal ones. Unfortunately it had been built with a misplaced bridge/saddle and the intonation was off. But I still love the brand.

Loved the story about your Mum getting you to play the Neil Young songs! Random question, but what were you playing at the beginning? I'm a lower intermediate player looking to learn more strumming with embellishments (hammer ons etc). Not quite full blown bluegrass but sort of what you were playing 😁

My first guitar was a 1972 Martin D-28. It had a rosewood body but don't know if it was Brazilian. I was too young and naive to really appreciate it. I haven't been able to afford another. I've did buy a C Fox w/mahogany body dreadnought modeled after a Martin and love it. The prestige of a Martin is nice for resale value but I think it really depends on the individual guitar, despite the label.

Just buy a mcpherson sable in basketweave and you won’t need to have repairs and the basketweave sounds like a high quality wood guitar.

Wonderfull job on that D35. Very cool to have saved that guitar. Someone will be extremely happy with it. 7000$ is not too bad either. Makes sense, me coming from Canada you would pay easily 8000$ here. Martin prices are insane now a days. I payed 2700$ for my new 2007 D35 in 2008 and now here they go for over 4000$ plus taxes. Hehehe....

I like the fact that D16s got you into Martins. The music leader that was at my church when I first started going there got me into D16s. I’m 4’8” so the D16 has a good body depth for me. Anyway, I was wondering if you could tell me, what’s the difference between a newer D16E rosewood and D16RGT? Thanks.

I picked up a 2011 D16GT about 8 months ago. GT just means Gloss Top. Mine is Mahogany back and sides. The "R" in the D16RGT means it has Rosewood back and sides. E just means electronics - assume it has a pickup. Hope this helps.

I used to own a D28 that was Brazilian Rosewood. I bought it new somewhere in the 60's. I sold it for $300 because I didn't think I was good enough to play it. What a mistake.... I've always wanted a D35. They are so beautiful. I bought a 1970's Yairi D85 that had a 3 piece back similar to a D35. It has burled mahogany sides and the two outside pieces on the back. The center piece is jacaranda, some kind of Indonesian rosewood. Beautiful, and it sounds great! But, nothing sounds like my other Martin, an HD28 my wife bought me back in the 90's. She bought for me because she felt bad that I'd sold my other one. Martins are just the best.

Jacaranda is a synonym for Brazilian rosewood, which wasn't forbidden until 1992. The question is whether it was solid or just a veneer. I've got the veneer on an Ibanez Concord 762M and a Tama 3557-12. Martin used solid materials.

@@gingerbeer914 I have several Yairi guitars. 2 D85s, and 1 5036, which is a beautiful classical. They the other D85, and the 5036 are laminated jacaranda. They may not be as good as a Martin, but they're pretty darn good! And beautifully built!

I guess they were trying to keep the original spec as much as possible and it is probably a lot less work to use the CF rod since the CF at least keeps the steel tube in place. If you add an adjustable truss rod, it’ll no longer look like the original guitar - and above all, I’m sure it is much higher risk that the neck will warp or snap if that steel tube gets removed in order to insert an adjustable truss rod. Those are my guesses. 😊

People use DRY heat these days. They're long past using steam. Dry heat has all the benefits and none of the negatives of using steam. The main one being you're not soaking other places in the guitar with water and you're not causing the finish to blush and you're not possibly causing the neck block to come loose from steam overpenetrating into places it shouldn't. Go over to twoodfrd's channel and watch any of his neck resets in the last 2-3 years or so. The more recent vids have the most recent version of that heating method.

New martins sound great too. Not just the old ones. I have a brand new HD28 special and a 000-18 and they blow away all other brand guitars.

@@ryanbloom1738 those D28 guitars are fabulous from listening. I got the HD 28 because it came with the addi spruce top. They’re to me both just incredible guitars. Not sure how Martin continues for 100 years to make the best but they’re incredible.

I have a D 35 and it is hands down the best sounding guitar I’ve ever heard. Everyone that hears it says it sounds the best they have heard. I’ll never get why they are not more in demand.

Because of the fear of an eventual neck reset for one. But the stigma of the D35s being made cheaper and not having a solid body turned people off. And, the rumors(?) of the old templates being worn and becoming inaccurate was a concern.

@@westbayk2156 D35 uses solid wood throughout. That nonsense about three piece backs is just urban legend. The template issues on bridge placement affected all Martins. I have a friend with a 1975 D45 that had the bridge in the wrong place, which he had fixed years ago.

@@pmscalisi That "urban legend" has permeated many a well respected website. Could it be that all those venerated institutions are wrong ? The template issue affected the headstock as well, cosmetically. Hence the well rounded corners.

Facts and stats aside, David Gilmour used a 1971 D35 throughout the Pink Floyd catalog, namely on Wish You Were Here. That alone gives MY 1971 D35 all the cred it needs.

Wish I had seen this earlier. A few months ago I sent my '81 d-35 back to Martin for a refret. Looks like it's going to take six months and cost well over $2,000. I'm no expert but it seems excessive both in time and money. Respect for the customer or the instrument cannot be detected in my communication with them so far. Has not been a pleasant experience. But they have the guitar for a few more months.

Cancel the deal and ask your guitar back. Then go to a good luthier. I've never seen a refret that cost more than 400 euros. 2 grand is a scam.

@@rosewoodsteel6656 no, although that is all I had asked for and was pretty surprised with the list of things that they say need to be done. As far as I can tell it's the whole Martin neck reset thing and all attendant procedures. I am willing to trust that when I finally get it back 6 months or so after initiating the process, and paying a premium, that it will be a very happy homecoming.

Wouldn’t pay less than 600 for a neck reset on a guitar of this quality. Fretwork can be a few hundred more. $1k isn’t unreasonable.

That would require removing the fingerboard and drilling a sizable hole through the neck block. I didn't think it was worth it to modify it that heavily.

Light means 12s. That's my favourite. But the standard setup of my Martin D-28M The Mamas and the Papas is with 13s. I'm not going to change that. It played fine right from the start. It's solid Madagascar rosewood btw, the best alternative for Brazilian rosewood.
