In Europe I'd have to pay 306€ (329$) for the Shaman and 297€ (319$) for the Bodacious 😎 I don't think that's too salty for a good knife..

Even half the price would be too much for this. However I can't blame Spyderco. Why sell something on a reasonable price, if fanboys are willing to pay top price for a mediocre knife because of the brand name.

One of the things that make me a spyderco fan over benchmade is that i can get a really good knife for a lot less money. I've been able to pick up some great knives for less than $200. Got the Crucarta PM2 for $165 which is the most I've ever paid for a knife. Buy everything on sale. My only BM knife is the griptilian that i got for $106 and I've since put on a deep carry clip and micarta scales.

I feel like Spyderco pricing is more like "How much can we charge and have them still buy it?" Instead of "How can we make a profit and deliver a good product?"

What really gets me is that not only are the prices high, they basically never drop it. Sure, they'll still run sales here or there, but outside of that, those prices are locked in. It's not like they can always say it's because it's made in America, or because it uses top of the line materials, either. As an example, the fucking chinese-produced, 8cr, FRN handle Resilience Lightweight is still $71; dollar for dollar, it's one of most expensive 8cr knives I'm aware of, and it's just not a good deal by any metric. It won't be long until their more premium knives face the same fate; some could argue their VG10 line is already facing it. It's just all around insane to me. It's like, somewhere along the line, Spyderco stopped making knives for knife users, and stepped into the realm of "lifestyle brands".

You make the point a number of times that the Shaman is $100 less but what I’m seeing is that the Shaman is now also $270+ as well. The Manix is still about $165 in G10 tho.

S30V is good stuff. Most of my Benchmade and Spyderco knives are in this blade steel. Went to the knife shop this morning and took a look at the Benchmade 710. $415.00? I did some research and found that the original sold for $150.00. Sure, they're using S90V and a new variant of the cross bar lock. But man... Good review. Thanks

The Manix 2 in CPM S110V with G10 scales is about 280$ and the one in CTS BD1N is about 185$ with light weight scales and the Maxamet version with G10 is around 320$ here in Sweden and they are very hard to get any cheaper due to shipping, absolutely love the Manix 2 just because it feels molded after my hands 😊

You can get the Rex 45 Manix good aftermarket scales and clip and maybe even a ball cage and still come in under the price of this knife and that is absolutely absurd

I have 19 spydies, love them to pieces, but man they need to chill on the prices and maybe focus on some new designs. This could have been called the Shaman 2.5 or Shaman S or something instead of being the banner of this years reveal as a "new" knife. The scales are interchangeable for christ sake! Cmon Spyderco! Please don't join the ranks of ZT and Benchmade!

Spyderco hasn't done anything exciting in the knife world for a long time and if they did something different then it's only ever applied to the most expensive models and never really trickles down to their more affordable offerings. Then we just wait for someone else to do it better for less.

For me, it’s extremely annoying that it has a new pocket clip screw hole pattern, which means waiting for new clips to be designed for the aftermarket, and it’s extremely frustrating to have completely flat scales when the Shaman was nice and contoured. Just makes no sense to me, feels like they’re moving backwards

Indeed there is much S30V fatigue with knife collectors, which is unwarranted as you indicated. However, some may complain about this steel being used in this knife at the price. Perhaps there is a feeling that the price is too high for this steel. In other words the steel is fine but the price is too high.

Yea it's a fine steel, but has always been a bizarre choice for a hard use knife. S35vn would be much more appropriate. Cruwear or magnacut or lc200n or even 14c (at a much lower price) would be much much better.

So glad you posted this. The original reason I was super interested in the bodacious was because it was the same size as the shaman but it has more sharpened edge but the price doesn’t do it for me. I’ll wait until a dealer comes out with an exclusive that will hopefully be closer to the $200 range or even with upgraded steel and handle material for around the current selling price. I have a shaman with M4 dlc coated and od green micarta I paid, if I remember correctly, maybe $10 to $15 more than the standard bodacious. Great video.

I'd rather have s35vn on a hard use knife as it's quite a bit tougher. Cruwear or pd1 or magnacut would be much, much better.

I’ll echo everything you said. I will say though that mine is not smooth like yours. Only when I loosen the pivot (which then gives me blade play) will it drop shut like yours. May also be the lock is stiff on mine so it is uncomfortable to press and hold in all the way while the blade falls shut. Would have liked to see a little contouring on the scales. They leave a little to be desired.

Yeah, I had the opportunity to buy one at Blade Atlanta (bc they'd secretly brought about 20 of them to the show). Overall, while I know you prefer s30v for mid priced options, in my use cases, I found s30v dulled far too quickly and prefer a harder edge retention option. I'll probably wait until a sprint run in better steel drops later down the road. Thanks for showing the world, though!

I've got 2 compression lock knives (both PM2s) One in S30V, & one in S90V...Both quickly developed lock stick out of the box which went away as they broke in & now both are perfect. However, the lock stick on the S90 version was worse & lasted longer...Would this maybe be from the harder steel or just coincidence?

I like that new Spyderco Manix 2 XL Brown Canvas Micarta (3.85" Satin CRU-WEAR) coming for about $225 - also made in USA. I have a factory 2nd of the standard S30v model, slowly customizing it with a brass replacement ball-cage lock, a ceramic ball bearing, a pair of dark green grooved Micarta scales, and a deep-carry ti clip.

Yep, I think it’s going to be like the shaman in one regard, it’s only worth buying if the blade is used or a sprint. If I could have steered the design wheel I would have given this blade the cru carta treatment as a base line, and a different stronger lock to set it apart from the crowd.. perhaps the bolt lock, ball bearing lock, or whatever the parata had.

I believe the shaman scales fit on the Bodacious liners. I don't think internally it is any different

I bought aftermarket scales in g10 orange for my PM2 Wharncliffe XHP with DLC coating (practically the same color as the stock g10) because the aftermarket scales were a bit more grippier with a honeycomb pattern and had a slight chamfer on the edges (drop off as described in the video) instead of the sharper edge (drop off)of the stock scales . The Para 3s g10 scales don't have a chamfer but they have a subtle curve (on the drop off) that feels better in the hand compared to the stock PM2 G10 scale of my PM2. Something that Spyderco never seemed to go back and change for the PM2 but it would be very appreciated if they did.

I agree s30v is still a great steel however at this price point it should be Magnacut, S45VN, or even Cruwear on both the Shaman and Bodaciuos as a base steel IMO especially as PM2 and Para 3 are now coming in S45VN base models.

S30v is a great steel for this knife. I don’t care if it is a hundred years old. I have gotten where I can sharpen it to an incredible edge. My manix 2 feels like it can cut particles.

I was kind of interested in it, but after seeing this.. meh. I’m good. My favorite knife is a Spyderco, they are one of my favorites, but I would absolutely hate to see them get into benchmade territory with their pricing. They aren’t that bad yet, but if they keep it up I could see it happening.

I think the main thing for people is that there's so much competition and so many companies offering something similar or in most cases more for the money. So if this knife had D2 for example, why would you buy it compared to anything else? You want D2 with better machining then spend like half as much. You want something with better steel then buy something else for the same price or less. When something is "overpriced", a lot of times it's because it's being compared to other offerings. When there's scarcity or rarity, then the price can be justified a bit more when the demand far exceeds the supply but there's no shortage of knives equal to or better than this one and other knives by Spyderco, Benchmade, etc. So if someone is fine with this price and knife then that's fine but for some it's not. Let's say someone has a budget in mind and wants to get the best they possibly can for the money then this knife ain't it is it?

I just purchased a Spyderco Vallotton at Knife Center for $287.00....For $1.00 more you can get the new run (while they last) of Thai (best quality tbh) Spyderco )Vallottons . The Bodacious is nice but the Vallotton is heirloom , Period . I buy USA , Italy ,Thailand and (sigh) China Spydercos ,but this one (I've been on a waiting list for over half a year), is a legitimate Treasure !! Happy July 4th !! Air Force 354th 1985-2005....Still alive and kickin !! Fiat lux !! I'm drunk !!

I'm very curious as to why they didn't chamfer the edges at least. I think they wanted to go for a slimmed down Shaman without the choil. But for the same price, I hope they at least can chamfer the edges.

An experienced sharpening guy has no trouble getting the heel on a Spyderco.

@@vorpfriendly7574 If you are using a sharpening jig, you just have to make sure the stone can hit all the way to the heel without cutting into the plunge line, Tape off the plunge line and wrap the tape over the edge so the stone can ride up against the plunge without damaging it. Then just focus on the heel until the unsharpened portion is gone then you can move onto sharpening as normal.

I remember buying my first shaman for under $200 after watching your review on it. Times have changed. I love Spyderco but I wish they would stop shipping knives that are off center or have blade play. It’s always a thought in the back of my head when contemplating purchasing a Spyderco. When it’s made in Taiwan I don’t even think twice cuz they knock it out of the park compared to golden. And I’d like to have a sharpening choil. The bodacious seems like the tenacious with a pm2 price

I’m about to buy my second Spyderco, a Sage 5LW, as a companion to my PM2. Not sure why one would spend this much more for a daily carry and use knife when the Sage or some others are out there.🎉

I am still perfectly ok with my cpm s30v spydercos. I want to pick up a canis, a spyderfly2, a shaman, and a pochi. I'm cool with spyderco's cruwear, magnacut, and whatever else. I love their compression lock.

I got the Microtech MSI manual, with the plastic scales, M390MK steel for 160, after taxes, on Saturday. That THAT is one hell of a knife. Makes you wonder wtf Spyderco is smoking to ask 100 dollars more for this 🤣

Made in usa is becoming an excuse for companies to charge exorbitant prices for knives. Base model pm2 and para 3 are over $200 now shaman is $270+ usa companies are pricing themselves out of everyday people's budgets. Made in usa isnt a reason to slap $50-100 extra onto a knife

I agree! And I surely don't see the increase in quality that the price signifies. I have two knives that are "made in America." One, a fixed blade made wholly by Todd Begg himself - I've been offered 5k+ no deal The other a Crawford full custom & prototype now cranked out by CRKT. Value? 25$. Eye of the beholder & both are. 2007.

PM2 and Para 3 are not over $200 and being made in the USA is a reason to charge more because it costs more to make them in the USA that's not to say some aren't ridiculous this one the Shaman are and the Paras are a little bit more than they should be and everything Benchmade comes out with but to say being made in the US isn't a reason to charge more is just wrong

Well that is besides the point US production is still way more expensive than Chinese but Spyerco's heat treatment is top tier for production their edges are always really sharp the only quality issues is occasionally the blades will be a little off center but they have been getting better about that so even that isn't a problem very often

Got mine last week. I agree that it's somewhat overpriced for what you get. But I do like the knife a lot! Guess I'm a fanboy... I've always liked the overall profile of the Shaman, but in hand it just never felt right to me. The Bodacious is lighter, much more comfortable to operate, and doesn't have the annoying blade nub. I'm hoping the Bodacious winds up being popular so the aftermarket brands will support it with scales, etc. I don't mind the smooth G10, but would love to see some upgrade options from folks like AWT.

Love the blade but price and blocky vanilla scales are a no go. I’ll wait for a version that brings a better feel to it. Maybe then I’ll think it’s worth the price.

S30V isn't bad. It just isn't novel and hasn't been in a long time. SPY27, S45VN, or MagnaCut would have helped to convince me. That said, you can get a North Arm Skaha II in MagnaCut for about the same price so yeah...

Every once in a while a knife comes along that I'm willing to pay for design and not materials. For years I've had Spydercos come and go, always ultimately deciding I just couldn't get past a certain design element (or more). PM2 for example. Everyone's "ideal EDC." Sure, if you don't mind having a tip that will snap off if you look at it the wrong way, an uncomfortable finger choil nub, un-necessary/ugly pocket clip holes around the pivot and one of the worst blade-handle ratios on the market, than yea, it may be the perfect EDC for you. The Shaman... Finger nub, overly thick blade stock, 12 pocket clip holes, blade/handle ratio, finger choil, pocket clip hot spot. Anyway, point being... this design checks every box for what I've been looking for in a Spyderco, design wise. I didn't mind paying $70 - $90 more than it "should" be priced. It's an excellent, dare I say... nearly ideal large EDC knife.
