I was forced to do something that I’m usually against. The customer wanted it plastered this way but I’ll be honest, it’s not the way I usually do things!
Todays video all about making good. I’ll show you the best way to flatten an uneven wall, the best way to prepare walls for Plastering and I’ll reveal my #1 rule in Plastering.
I broke it in todays video…make sure you watch it so you don’t do the same!!
If you like this video then please like and subscribe to our channel. And leave a comment…I’d love to hear from you!
Thanks got watching.

as a rule, if a customer wants me to do half a job or to bodge it so they can save a bit of money in the short term then i simply refuse. if i can't be proud of a job when it's done then it ain't worth doing.

@@PlasteringForBeginners How about covering the last, maybe, 6" of the wallpaper with that wide masking tape with the ultra-soft-gummy glue ("Frog Tape" is what they call it in the USA), then the tape could be pulled off once the plaster gets its final troweling without pulling the wallpaper off with it. The hard, straight line would look OK, since it would fall right where the wallpaper ends anyway. Then, if the built-ins don't cover the line and the customer ever wants to strip the wallpaper and smooth it, they could just use scrim tape and joint compound, with whatever sanding that requires.

A friend of mine (laying tiles) warned the customer that the tiles would subside if he layed them but the customer insisted so he did the job. The tiles subsided really quick. The guy didn't pay. They ended up in small claims court and the customer won. Probably a rare situation but best to do it correctly the first time

Little tip Blaine, when removing wallpaper score it in a chris cross with a knife and use hot water with a touch of washing up liquid in to soak it. This allows the water to penatrate quicker. Also take off more paper than you have here, it's much easier to feather in when you give yourself more room to work. Nice work though mate, keep up the good content. 👌

Hey Blaine, great channel. Just wanted to say thanks. I work as a plasterer in Perth WA with my Dad . He's pretty old school and was reluctant at first, but I've managed to talk him in to incorcoporating a few things like sponge float techinques, speed skims, flexi trowels and soon a power float. After being in the trade myself for nearly 20 years and knowing the traditionl methods, we both agree these things have made a huge difference in the ease and quality of the work and the time in which we can knock it out. So thanks for sharing. Even old tradies are learning new tricks! Also, agreed on the patching. It's not preferable, but if you have the time, going back and sanding down the joins works very nicely.

Had an unopened bag of multi finish that was a month out of date and thought I'd give it a go on some window lintels to avoid binning seven quids worth of plaster. All went fine until the first coat started to pull in and it began to crack in spots. Opened a new bag for the second coat and slung the other. Lesson learned.

Another top video mate! I'm not a plasterer by trade. But whenever i do any for friends or family, i straight up refuse to patch in. Because like you say, looking straight at the wall might look good but as soon as you get natural light beaming across the wall, and you're even at a slight angle to it, it just stands out so bad. And again like you say, the amount of time it takes to blend a patch in, I'd rather just skim the entire wall and have a perfect finish in comparison. Can see why you done this though. Gotta keep the customer happy ay lol. Keep the content coming and have a good bank hols 🤙🏻

Couldn’t agree more mate, most of the time it’s not much more effort to do the whole wall, that’s what I always explain to customers, I’ve had some half decent results by cutting a 10mm wide line In the existing plaster they feathering into that. But still would rather do the whole wall. Customer knows best though 😂

If u do a patch. Best way is use a wall smoother like toupret. It sands so well and you can't see the join. However you need to apply it slightly proud plus it takes a day to dry and need a gentle sand. Great for the diyer or a job where you have multiple visits booked. But not a 1 day job.

Hi mate, like your videos. Was just wondering about the wall that you did plaster over, where the larger section of bonding out was done. Did you scrim up a line where the new bonding joined the existing. As wouldn't this be a potential area where a vertical crack might occur in the new plaster. Also, was your thinking that old bonding would be better as I cures faster. Bonding is a low suction plaster requiring 4hrs normally to avoid a bleed through the finish. You didn't make this clear. Would you ever suggest warming the water when applying patchwork bonding in small areas, to ameliorate the risk of a bleed..? Did that make sense...?

There is a way to make that blended joint to more or less disappear or at very least very difficult to c and read that’s to do as blain did but then when it’s dried to go over the joint at least 3 trowels wide with easi fill applying 2 coats then rub it down with a hand sander obviously though the existing wall paper would have to b stripped back much further to do this but this method really is effective when it comes to losing patching joints

3 trowels wide!! If there’s any slight blemishes where the new plaster meets the existing, you literally just run some filler up the line of new plaster. It’s more visible putting filler on wider as it’s a different texture when sanded to the plaster or the existing so would stick out even more

One thing that keeps happening to be (as someone fairly new to the game) is somewhere between leveling off the second coat and doing the wet trowel ai serm to unearth high spots in the wall, that i thought I had originally covered. The result is a smooth flat wall, with small patches of the existing wall peeping through. Im sure it looks ok when painted but does this happen to you? And is there a technique to avoid such issues?
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 2 жыл бұрын
Hi mate. It’s best to flatten the wall with Bonding if it’s uneven. This will ensure that no high spots will shine through - if it’s flattened beforehand then it won’t happen. Hope this helps pal and thank you fir watching 👍

I use the superlex trowels to feather in the edge, and I’ve seen the finished result painted. I can only tell where the new plaster joins the old because I did the job! It depends on how good you are, and experienced to avoid a join mark! Most people leave it too long before hitting it with water and taking it down as thin as possible! Harder trowels are useless for this! Tear marks everywhere. Just my tuppence worth! It’s, as you say better to do the full walk, but if your comfortable with patching, jobs a Gud’n! 👍🏻
