You are the exact reason the oldschool 4x4s have the reputation they do. If The driver has a problem you'll see it, hear it, or smell it. Then they're easy enough to pull out the trusty Hayes workshop manual and give it a go!. I'm a modern 4x4 specialist and can't do my job without 10s of thousands of $$$ of diagnostic equipment. Your doing a great job mate and good ONYA for getting in there!. Love the old 4bs they're all just nuts and bolts!

Radiators are prone to debris damage so I recommend aftermarket such as Adrad

Today a bolt inside a timing belt tensioner pulley snapped on me on a Toyota Hiace. I tried extracting it, no good. Engine out, drilled out the bolt and re tapped the thread. All for a snapped bolt. A mistake yes, but that is apart of learning. Making mistakes. You can choose not to learn, but life never stops teaching! Good on you for giving it a red hot crack mate, keep on keeping on

That radiator will serve you well, especially with the correct OAT Coolant. Once you do the radiator, hoses, thermostat, belts, fluids and filters you basically start fresh. It’s expensive but we’ll worth doing. A “no brainer” so to speak. Besides, you’ll never loose money on an 80 Series these days. Everyone wants one and prices reflect that. Good work mate. Haha brings back memories of my Datsun 180b rally car thought it would be good to put new plugs in it and snapped one off in the block then snapped off the easyout in the block trying to get broken plug out!!!!! I scrapped the car after that 🤫🤔🤣

I know that feeling too well. Old 4x4’s love to snap studs and bolts no matter how careful you are being with them. These days I tend to replace all bolts and studs just so I don’t have to deal with removing broken studs/bolts. You are doing an awesome job with the 80 series. Keep it up, great to watch and hopefully is inspiring others to have a go 😊

Re: I BROKE MY 4X4, THEN BROKE IT SOME MORE... I can so relate to that! My GU Patrol had the pin pulled on the grenade. Have just finished a NA Barra conversion in the troll with a COMPUSHIFT SPORT auto trans controller, custom gear change profiles for towing / off road with full manual mode and TCC lockup for downhill decent. So pleased with the power increase. 14lt / 100km. You guys produce some great content... thanks for uploading.

You had it easy I had a massive learning curve, when I was installing my exhaust the studs came straight out the back of the turbo housing and were abit shit so whilst tapping new threads I was leaning on some rags and under the rags was the injector return lines, so as the tap started getting tight I put more weight on my hand and snapped the injector return lines. So had a 3 hour return trip to get new lines and upon installing them I snapped the overflow outlet on the radiator with my knee so I had to replace the radiator and coolant 😂😂😂 expensive mistakes

Smashing job bro, that's exactly how i thought myself, the best thing is you learnt the snapped stud and bolt lesson the easier way by having mates available. instead of in the Simpson or up the Cape etc Not sure why you nearly cried over it though, you'll have a few more days like that before you're finished, so take them as a good thing instead of something stressful or negative (it is stressful, i understand). By sorting things like this you'll be able to use the same skills of diagnostics and repair to fix pretty much anything. Great work mate, keep the grind up, it'll all pay off in time without a doubt.

Love your videos mate - I own one of these with a Petrol and my alternator died followed shortly by a leaky radiator too. You did better than I did though; I snapped half my radiator bolts and rounded every nut getting the fan clutch off.

Good stuff mate, the more you do yourself on the 80 the more confident you will have in it out on the tracks. I'm on the final stretch of doing my 80 up and it's given me the confidence that I know all the weak points and I know what spares to take with me an know how to fix/fit them.

I was going to be that guy and say "should have got a nissan" haha jokes but in all seriousness great video and good advice for people who don't do enough work on their own cars.

I have a Land Rover discovery 1 300tdi diesel. It’s taught me to give things a go haha. In a car like this and my Disco, the amount of stuff it “needs” fixing could easily cost the price of the car in a mechanics time alone. So really for the car to be financially viable you have to give it a go and learn along the way. Plus you know how things were done and how parts of the car works. Im not mechanically minded but I have had my Disco 8 years now. I can tell when it’s not right and usually pinpoint the issue quickly. A bit of research online and I can decide if it’s something I’ll attempt myself or not. It also helps that I met an old fella locally that’s worked on Land Rover for 30 years and will usually charge less if I go give him a hand as he isn’t getting any younger.

Wear and tear happens mate!! Get around it and live the life of a real 4wd 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻

Quick tip from NZ, when picking a rad try go for a manual version. Reason being is the auto section will block up a chunk of the rad for trans cooling. Best option for Auto is Manual Rad with after market Trans Cooler Best option for Manual is Manual Rad and send it!

Consider yourself lucky, thats a stack of stud left to work with. Even had thread you could have thrown a nut on, quick weld and wind her out. Wait till you snap off something in a blind hole... or snap a tap. Good on you for giving this all a go. Dan seems like a top bloke.

You should get ur factory copper/brass rad repaired and flow tested and keep the alloy as a spare. Only costs like $120-150, done it a few times with cooked radiators on 80s generally done same day aswell

Buy a stud removal tool they will be able to grip the remaining portion of that stud and undo it. Alternatively weld a nut to the top of what is left of the stud and undo it that way. Keep the part you broke and measure the remaining so you have an approximate length for when you buy a replacement stud. This happens alot to be honest when working on vehicles of all sorts

Buying older always garantee s things will sometimes go wrong... It can be a pain in the arse, but as you go through things the 4rby gets better...and ya learn along the way. Keep up the great content lads.

With an old vehicle one has to have the patience and be ready for parts to break down. As and when they do you replace them and move on. Good luck mate....enjoy it. I would have gone and put an OEM radiator or other replacement parts when required. They last longer and improves the performance of the vehicle. OEMs always !

You should of done all this over a few episodes mate. When you first bought it. All fluids and filters one episode.. All belts, rad change, hoses clamps etc, Then the exhaust/dump swap. Yea its exciting driving and making heaps of noise and ita great u guys are keen to drive especially a new car. Seriously tho.. damn dude.. u run a massive risk with these not changing or checking the basics immediately... they aren't a forgiving motor... I'd be doing the timing belt for ur own piece of mind before the valves say hello to the pistons on the wrong stroke

mate, there's plenty of full ally ones available but on the net mostly..i ran then in all my hilux and cruiser forestry utes and not only were they running cooler and easy to clean the seeds out of too..probable around the same price as the one you have too..kepp them in mind for the other boys when their plastics split and leak.

There's nothing wrong using a 3rd party radiator, as long as your know when to change it again before it breaks, I have used a lot of third party radiators with my cars , made in china, thailand and even 2nd hand raidiator from surplus shops because its like the prices is heaven and earth, just for comparison, fpr my honda civic 1996 original OEM cost like 540 AUD as against to thailand third party costs 40 AUD, and i have use that for 4-5 years with no drama, I even changed it without it breaking down. a lot of people will say LC80 is bullet proof, that's not true!, ergo your topic, even military Tanks breaks down. hehehe.... my point is, do whatever works for you mate, don't let fan boys affect your journey with your 4x4, cheers to your channel!

When me and my dad were changing the timing belt on his 80 he did it and got it running and decided to tighten it a little more and snapped the bolt in the block. It took us 10 days to fix it and the timing plate and head had to come off twice because the resealing the timing plate we did it wrong the first time. Was a big mess and not fun

Was that new radiator to suit an auto? Got the extra little lines at the bottom for the trans fluid cooling.

Not sure if this applies to a land cruiser but years ago i got a cracked radiator ('89 mazda astina) and the tow truck driver actually suggested i unbolt the radiator and take it to a radiator shop (natrad i think it was) and get radiator tub replaced. It cost about $50 and worked great. Again not sure if its applicable or good advice for your landcruiser.

Great to see you jump in and giving it a crack. Job well done, next time you break off a stud and there's thread sticking out see if you can put 2 nuts on and lock them together. Then just unscrew the stud, otherwise weld a nut on and cool it down before unscrewing it.

Your still doing alright i have a 60 series 2h and although it drives and stops theres billions of things that need doing but its an investment if your keeping it worst case i need a new body in a few years from the rust i can transfer all my parts over at the moment all the seats and carpet are out im really giving it a overhaul and just do what needs doing for now buddy next thing get turbo gauge and egt gauge if you dont have already they are must have

Top tank on my radiator split a while back. it was cheaper to replace than to repair it so, I got a radiator made in Indonesia and not from that other country. I was warned by the mechanic to not come back if it was made in "That" other country hahaha

Don’t worry Patrick. Your not the first one to be heavy handed with a stud on a old motor. Don’t worry about putting in a non genuine radiator especially if you’ve got it locally. You’re local bloke will help you out if something goes wrong before Toyota will

You regretting this yet? Lmfao. Paj 4 life lol. Keep up the good work mate. It's great to know how to work on your own vehicle but agree you have to be careful and double check things. While doing my cam shaft seals I forgot to remove a bolt holding the shaft still before cranking the motor. Busted valves ended up with a head service, valves, full VRS Kit etc etc. One little bolt ends dup costing me another $1500 approx.

On the bright side, plenty of opportunity for content

Get a torque wrench for everything on an 80 series. Kingchrome is OK and about $100. Toyota has specks for every nut and bolt including wheel nuts at 125 ft/lbs (I think). Had my HZJ80 for 22 years and it still loves me. Got a FZJ80 a few months ago for the interior which was as new and swapping stuff over. Great cars, I will rust out before it does.

Why are there barbs at the bottom of the new radiator? Those are for the auto trans cooler loop, but she’s a manual.

Reminds me of my land cruiser/pajero experience..... 5 years with a cruiser $25k in repairs..... 17 years in pajero I’ve just reached $1k in repairs... oh and thousands of dollars less in fuel, tires and other.... Toyota’s hold their value coz they cost so much to own..... shame both the cars are actually gone now, the cruiser is still a great vehicle....oh well hello mahindra 😀... kinda wanna buy one now, but the pajero is still perfect......😀😀😀

Our local radiator guys supply the radiators to the Toyota dealership across the road because genuine Toyota is more than most people round here want to pay. Nothing wrong with Natrad. Had one in my 100 for 7 years now.
