the e5-2699 v3 Xeon has 18 cores, 36 threads and is now only $200...(!) that would seem like an absolute bargain, or is it? Let's build a PC and look at this CPU vs a i9-10980 Xe.

A year later: Dell 7810 Dual CPU workstations are $120 on eBay. Actually the 2696 is a higher end CPU than the 99. $50 on eBay as of this comment. 32GB sticks of DDR4 EEC memory are $40 ea. So a 36 core, dual CPU workstation with 256GB of memory for > $400. Then add in whatever storage or video card you want. That era of chipset can boot from PCIe so a NVMe drive on a $10 PCIe adapter card is do-able for super fast storage.

Since X99 boards are pretty darn expensive for the vast majority of us, it would be interesting to see how well this chip can be tuned on a Dell or HP or similar machine. Was waiting to see the build with this CPU. Pretty amazing performance out of such an old chip. Tempted to upgrade my 2678 v3 in my server now. When you do part two, to give this build the best chance, I think you need to go a modern case with a larger AIO. The 120mm Intel AIO will probably struggle once you start tuning. 0:50 As "Hardware Unboxed" have been testing, larger L3 cache on gaming CPUs is boosting FPS a lot more. We are heading towards the 4K120 Meta soon for gaming, and larger L3 cache is the fix for better FPS on high resolutions. Next Gen CPUs will have some nice double to triple L3 cache sizes, and that will boost performance so much from the CPU side. And rumors are saying that we are about to see +50% on nextgen GPUs, so 4K120 Very High settings is really coming in 2022.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 2 жыл бұрын
Ryzen cache utilisation is better due to the successively tuned perceptron predictor, this small circuit makes up so much of the actual performance difference between Ryzen generations, and Intel is barely clawing its way out of being left years behind in predictor performance. While cache capacity difference between models matters, so does cache utilisation between different processor families. I don't think this system is that great TBH, when it has to contend with a 2700X that you can get the CPU for around the same money and plop on an actually super cheap mainboard that will beat China boards day in day out like it's not even funny. If you need a lot of RAM, that is for sure the saving grace of this build, because you can get large amounts in RDIMM cheaply. Quad channel DDR4 is nice, but again a better predictor not only optimises the cache utilisation, but also the RAM access!
@JABelms

@@SianaGearz They are not bad, just really not for the faint of heart. I “downgraded” from my 9th gen i7 build to dual Xeons (24C48T) to promote my custom PC business (it’s cooled by a triple watercooling loop lol) but since I play at 4K with my 2080Ti, there isn’t much difference at all FPS wise. Games are also becoming more optimized as time goes on and my favorite games are getting more into indie. So for veterans like me, it doesn’t matterthat much...Xeons are still solid builds, and is much better for the environment

It will run 3.6 on 12 cores and 3.5 on 14 cores with 100 BCLK.

I still love my x99 system. Used it as a gaming system forever. I'd still use it today, since im always gpu bound at 7680x1440p, but, The 5ghz all core of my 7920x tho, she bad! A good chip. Its still like having 10920X at 5ghz, so x299 is still a really good plate form, especially if you know how to overclock. I pair it with my EK ed., MSI 2080Ti seahawk. Raid 0 w/ 5 intel 665p M.2 drives, 240gb M.2 for the OS, and another older intel 750 series nvme in the bottom slot. Still havent even used the Dimm.2 yet lol. I prly wont upgrade for a few more years still too. I see at least one more, maybe 2 more gpu upgrades before I'll need a cpu upgrade.

I did the same a few years ago, resurrecting a 2012 Dell, dual Xeon workstation and getting the fastest xeons that would fit in it. But I just bought a Comet Lake (10th gen) gaming PC, and the more current processor will do about 60% more work single threaded or about double the work per core, full load vs. full load. So what adds up to 32 threads of gen 2, e5-2690 only does double the work of 8 threads of gen 10, i5-10300H. At least theoretically according to geekbench scores. The laptop is still on the way so I haven't tested it yet.

still rocking my sandy bridge E5 2650 8 core CPU for video editing. built that system nearly 2 years ago now. got that paired with 32GB ECC DDR3 1866MHz (runs at 1600MHz because sandy bridge doesn't support higher clocked memory) and a GTX 980. this thing does a great job. I have it dual booting Windows 7 and XP.

Those Xeons are nice systems. I have dual Xeon e5-2680v3 with 128 gig ram. With full load it consumes 500 watt for the wall (cpus only). It produces so much heat I can use it as radiator to keep the room warm 😱 On the other side of spectrum I have rig I use for recording streaming from security cameras doing AI video analysis etc. it is Xeon 2608L v4 with gt1030 SSD and classic 4 tb drive. With 4x4K cameras it consumes on average 50 watts from the wall !!! Very interesting CPU.

It's just fantastic to see what kinds of system you can still build on these old X99 platforms! A thought on the subject of these older KW/h guzzlers. Depending on where you live in the world, building a system around a 145W cpu doesn't seem to be such a effecient or practical decision imo. Atleast, not if world prices on natrual gas come down reasonably after past week's price hikes. Most countries link their KW/h price to the price of natural gas. So this 22nm roomheater will also get a more expansive to run, albeit less then heating ones room with tradition radiators.

I have two X99 platform Xeon rigs. One is an ASRock X99 E5 2699 V4 (22c 44t) w128GB of RAM, the other is an Asus X99 Deluxe with an E5 2683 V4 (16c 32t). I've been playing around with Xeons & X99 for a couple of years now. ASRock boards will allow use of more RAM with the V4's. Asus boards seem to be limited to 64 GB with either V3 or V4 Xeons. The ASRock boards also have USB C standard (depending upon the mobo) while with Asus you have to use add-in parts. For video transcoding the Xeons barely go above idle temps, my i7 5960X ran close to twice as hot under load with the same cooling with the 2683 V4. The 2699 V4 runs even cooler with identical cooling. It's been my experience that 103.4 BLCK is the highest both rigs will go with 100% stability. I have the 5960X and an E5 2683 V3 14c 28t (my first X99 Xeon CPU) stashed away as spares now. The V3's max out at 2133Mhz RAM, the V4's 2400Mhz. I'm not a gamer so I have no input on them for gaming use but for A/V work the V4's are my choice. I went after Xeon's that had been listed on Ebay for a while and made lowball offers until I got what I wanted for the price I wanted to pay. I also have two Asus Sabertooth X79 rigs with E5 1680 V2's in them running at 4.5Ghz with 64GB of RAM. They never miss a beat in daily use.

@@yasirrakhurrafat1142 x99 is definitely a beast for it's price. As workstation and also as a gaming rig. 2696v3 has no competition today at it's price point for the CPU+board+memory combo: 8300 CPU-Z score and 14500 Cinebench R23 score with a TDP of just 145 Watts. 2133 MHz is possible on DDR3 with a good motherboard. But for stability I run it at 1866 with lowered timings, because I hate BSoDs 😁

Picked up a e5-2690 v4 for about 220 us back in the spring. Picked it up along with 16 gb more ecc memory to upgrade my old dell precision t5810 from a e5-1620 v3 with 16gb. Even went from dual to quad channel. So far I'm loving it. As a user I can just wallow in this pc. I can have a game and about 30 chrome tabs open and barely be using a quarter of my system resources. I often leave large projects open in the background, while I'm gaming reading up about my game and watching youtube at the same and it never breaks a sweat. The whole point of this rig was to get ready for rtx 4000 on the cheap. My gpu's the weakest part, I'm running an gtx 660 and quadro p2200. =(
