For a realistic experience don't forget to put any public transport stops on the opposite side of a huge car park to the customer entrances, or preferably the wrong side of a 4 lane stroad. If there are cycle tracks and footpaths make sure they don't have an entrance anywhere near the cycle parking or the entrances, to maximise discomfort of active travel users so they have to walk across said huge car park rather than having a short, comfortable route.
@edwardmiessner6502

And always put the bus routes on the roads with bike paths so the cyclists would have to dodge the buses when they stop for passengers
@nickbooker5579
@nickbooker5579 2 жыл бұрын
@@edwardmiessner6502 Yes typically the realistic experience is shared use only with no extra space provided to make up for the bus shelter and boarding area, leaving narrow scraps of space to move past it. Don't forget to also put lots of obstacles on the footpath too, like BT junction boxes and traffic light controllers. There are actually solutions to that in real life - known variously as the floating bus stop or the bus stop bypass, or in the shared use case just providing additional space for the boarding and waiting area and other obstacles rather than carving that space out of the (usually already too narrow) path. Hopefully the new design standard LTN1/20 will improve things but I am not holding my breath.

@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines I'd just like to add most fuel stations positioned so close to a roundabout like this often have the exit side of the fuel station cutting the roundabout out so they exit directly onto the main road or at least an exit road then onto the main road. I think you should ban cars from driving on the street in front of the "big wave" so that they park in the actual parking lot and walk from there. Also there should be pedestian crossings from the parking to the shops. And a walkway from the housing area to the shops would also help with the huge amount of traffic.

You could improve the traffic flow into the retail park by making the two roads along the sides connect in front of McDogs to form a loop (yes, you would need to lose a bit of car park, but there's plenty) that you could make one-way. That would stop traffic crossing over at the entrance to the car park. And if you add pedestrian access into the retail park at McDogs then you might get more people walking there and fewer cars!
@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines

In the 3-lane roundabouts, make the outside lane more like a sliplane forcing only the oncoming traffic into it and allowing them to only turn off at the next node. Traffic that's already on the roundabout can proceed forward only from the middle two lanes, and can turn off the next node from the center lane or continue-on. This way they're not choosing the outer lane two nodes before their turn-off.

Not sure how realistic you're aiming for with this series, but just as a point of note - a retail park like that would need a MUCH bigger car park, an asda by itself would likely have a car park 2-3x as big as that - apart from that though, looks great so far and really captures the spirit of a UK retail park!

Mostly in lower-income areas in industrial cities like Manchester, Liverpool, and Birmingham. I believe they were made around the 50/60's. I know a lot have been knocked down now or they have cosmetically changed the outsides (by adding cladding). I don't think anyone under 20 will have seen them. FYI, loving the series Biffa

Not sure if they're exactly the same, but these sound very much like what they call "calming circles" in Seattle. Personally, I think they tick people off more than they calm anyone! A very few of them also have plants in the center, so I'm glad I don't depend on the fire trucks being able to get through.

Looks great, would a path on the left side (away from the asda warehouse) of the McDonald’s connecting the shopping park to the neighborhood be realistic? Also, would adding entrances to the parking lot closer to the McD’s on either side eliminate the bottleneck at the front?

This city is shaping up amazingly, can’t wait to see the area grow! One thing I’d change though are those huge trees in front of Toys’R’Us. Realistically they’d probably have paid a premium for that spot because it can be seen from the main road and they’d have the trees there cut down to increase passing trade!

Biffa, I'd remove the road round the end of the Toys 'R' Us between the car park and the loading bay roads. There's no need for that road (cars can't get out), and it just adds another junction that cars have to negotiate to leave. Could also move McDs in a little and complete the road round the back as a drive thru.... Love your work!!!!

Please say I am not the only one that was thinking "thats pretty quiet traffic-wise for a UK retail park..." Glad you made the roundabout more effective. Biffa. As a fellow English person I can say that you've captioned the flavour of England really well. There's a few things missing, but they might need to be unlocked. Students. They're normally out till around 3am being drunk and loud. (Not all of them but 50%) Litter from fast food places. There's usually litter left laying about by people who can't quite figure out how a bin works. Unkept gardens. Every city has its fare share, normally they have half a car or a mattress in them. Speeding cars. Normally it's a BMW or AUDI driven at twice the speed limit. And lastly roadworks. For those who live in England you'll know about this. Someone will pick a road in good condition and dig up half of it, weeks later they'll finish whatever they're doing and fill the hole back in. Unfortunately no-one can fill a hole properly and we get left with potholes. a few weeks later someone else will dig up another part of the same road and create more potholes. This will carry on until the entire road is a pothole and is perfectly flat, then some idiot will say "that road looks like it needs to be resurfaced" so then the entire road is shut while the work is done, "yippee" says everyone "it's a beautiful fresh road" then about a week after the new surface is laid someone will come along and gig a hole in the road. 🤬 And then there's the motorway roadworks. We drive along a motorway, see a sign saying that there's 'roadworks ahead' one of the lanes will be closed off by cones, the speed limit will be temporarily lowered and you'll never see anyone doing any work! (See Jeremy Clarkson talking about roadworks). England is weird and I love it. 😋👍

Nice build, good to see the staples being used. I think to make it more authentic the access roads should go to the back of the stores as the trucks will usually go to the rear of all the stores to unload. They can still be anchored to the road, just at the back rather than the front. And just as I mention it Biffa makes the same realization. Doh.

Loving this so far! One thing that may help with your traffic around the back of your shops is to restrict cars and such from those sections that go back there, then, in your TMPE options window, on your policies tab, you can increase the vehicle restriction aggression to either High or Strict to make sure only trucks go back there. :)

The row houses are just like my Grandmothers home in Newport. She was in the middle one, my friend Richard and his family were on the right and a old man lived alone on the left. In the back was a garden with a wooden fence around it. If we went out the back gate we were on a path that connected all the houses but we also had a stream that ran behind our house and we would go play in the water with rope swings and climb the big trees.

Not too sure if we do this everywhere in the U.K. or if it’s just near where I live, but in big main roundabouts, like the one you have at the entrance to your city, we raise the middle up like a mound and then obviously decorate it with trees or whatnot to stop people from driving over. Obviously people in game won’t do that but I think it might be a nice touch that’s a bit more detail than you usually do, but nothing insanely complicated. Just raising the terrain a teeny bit. Obviously such a thing would have to wait until the city had established itself a big more because terraforming costs waaaay too much as of right now

On a other news, I learned a lot with a new city of 75k citizens. My layout is mess up when I add an airport, fret or passengers. I have to redo some roads and trains. Recycling center send out trucks to export raw ressources. Trams are good, but not that good. Exit train lines can be really buggy. I have to do an exit fret railway station. (Only connect to the entering highway to the exiting highway on a one way industrial road.) It curiously helps with my trains, I was stuck with them.

8:04 With this ability, you could theoretically make one hyper building to handle all your residential issues. Pick a dense residential building as a test building first, set it to like five thousand homes, and see what happens. Not sure how the game would deal with that, but this isn't a test of balance so much as a test for stress. If it works, place a bunch of them in a small area. See what happens. Could be a fun challenge, to have one hyper dense residential area and then try to build all the necessary infrastructure to handle it. Just a thought.

When I lived in Meltham West Yorkshire I had a paper round that had terrace houses like that on its route. I used to play a game we called the grand national as the houses had front garden with hedges that you could jump over starting from the top of the road. It was so much fun unless you damaged the hedge but the hedges were perfect height for a tall lad like I was to clear without causing any damage. Mischief night was so much fun when I was young. Anyway there are plenty of terraces like this in the towns and cities of Yorkshire.

With the roads themselves you made for the delivery trucks, make them trucks only as well instead of just the in/out junction. If you go to a shopping centre the road that goes to the back of the store always say "Deliveries Only" so cars wouldn't use them at all. You could always remove the road at the front leading to the back as well now you have put in a junction for trucks that leads directly to the back of the shops

I was going to suggest a couple of walking paths by the McDonald's and a couple of the roads butted up to but not connected to your main roads. It might take some pressure off of your tiny roundabout and slow people from crossing where there are no crossings. As soon as you put those truck access roads in, pedestrians started using them like mad (37:05). Also, maybe a back entrance for trucks by the HomeBase and Pets at Home.

Biffa! If you hold [alt] while moving things with the Move It mod, they will automatically move in standardised grid-square steps. So you can simply shift the houses and stuff one step to the side and leave exactly enough space for a path that's one unit wide. Holding [alt] will also allow you to rotate your stuff in 45-degree increments too
