Love the sound of the acoustic baritone. I can see why you can’t stop playing it. Great song. My father never drank or kept alcohol in his home because alcoholism was rampant in his ancestors and extended family. I thank him every day.

good for him. I'm hoping I can convince my son to start what your grandfather did and nip it in the bud for this gene line.

Your line about the Chapman legend, territorial expansion in the era of early industrial economy and globalization, and knowing where ‘the American dream’ began and where it tends in fact to lead for most of us: dead on. Telling it like it is. Appreciate you a lot, Tim.

First off, as someone who's just getting into guitar building, seeing a seasoned luthier like yourself make a mistake as simple as those fret markers really helped me realize that nobody is perfect at what they do. Second, as a former alcoholic and someone who recently quit smoking (edit: all the men on my dads side of the family are heavy smokers, it's a generation bad habit I picked up from them, figured I should explain how that relates back to the song), and used to be a touring guitarist, that song hit me in an oddly specific place. Thank you for all the content you continue to make, Tim.

No one is perfect at anything. We make mistakes, learn and move on without letting those mistakes define us, rather guide us as we grow. I'm talking about addiction as much as guitar making (and succumbing to the world of touring musicians! LOL!)

My mother's side of the family is known for having addictive personalities. She's no exception. I vividly remember the hell that was my teenage years, watching her alcoholism get worse and growing more and more numb to it. The trauma of those years was enough to effectively make me a teetotaler. Mom's still alive, but I'm no longer under her roof. I've seen the ravages of alcohol and the buck stops with me. Thank you for putting this song out into the world, Tim. It's something I needed to hear.

Wow. Good on you for rolling far from that tree. One of the things my father and I discussed when writing this song (I got his permission for the drinking and driving bit to be public :) is that neither of us feel like we ever "hit rock bottom" and are both very thankful for having the ability to see and correct the problem sooner than, sadly, many.

Thank you, Tim, for sharing your song. The baritone sounds great and the song rings true for me. I cut down my hard cider tree two years ago; I’m going to make guitars from the wood.

Hello guitarist and inventor TS. Of course I saw when you misplaced the 12th fret marker on that guitar, and listening to it today, I felt it has a sound color similar to a Spanish classical guitar but strung and played with electric guitar strings. Your song brings poetry, that thing stays in my head: "he planted everything... those trees to make alcohol" [3:42]. Greetings from Havana from a veteran rock bassist.

I write songs about 50/50 starting with either a bass or bassVI. The resulting songs are very different. The baritone sounds great. I always say that guitar making is at least 25% figuring out how to make a mistake look like a feature. Mistakes used to stress me out, doesn't any more. Enjoying a Sway video is part of my Saturday morning routine, thanks!

Ah know that monster well. That apply grew to great fruition on both orchards in our family so yeah always conscious of where my habits are going. Buried my youngest brother February 2020 at the age of 50. He took a stroke from drinking cider all day and not eating for years (he never got over mam's passing but if it hadn't been that, something else would have pushed him over. He was already well down the path). That stroke left him speechless and having to learn to walk again and living in a nursing home in his 40's. No proper function in his upper limbs. He had a lump in his throat but couldn't tell anyone. By the time the nursing home staff noticed it, it was huge. Cancer with secondary cancer in his liver. He had weeks to live literally. I often wonder if he hadn't had the stroke would he have got it checked sooner and possibly still be here. It's scary how normalised drinking has become. They'll ban marijuana but drinking gets prime time advertising. Well done to you. My mother packed it in cold turkey. She fell off the wagon a few times in the early years. After that we all decided together that if she could hold out till Christmas she could have one or two. And that's what she did. Every Christmas she had two baileys coffees on Christmas Eve and maybe one or two whiskys between Christmas Day and New Years Eve. 1st January, off it again. She had amazing strength to do that but I honestly think if we hadn't come to that arrangement she'd have still been going off on her 2 week binges where she'd drink till she dropped, wherever that be - middle of the street, corner of the bar, front gate.... One day at a time. Nothing but admiration for anyone who takes on that fight. I'll tell ya that all 6 of us "kids" were much happier and more relaxed with mam sober. Those were such good times.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Sounds very tough. I know a lot of people who do that sort of "rumspringa" with alcohol and it's great if it works. When I quit smoking (many years before I quit drinking) I saw how other people would cut back to 1 or 2 cigs a day. I tried that and found myself coveting those cigs, which meant the rest of the day I was dreaming about my "treat." So smoking less gave them MORE control over me! I had to just go cold turkey and turn that pull into anger against them for being stronger than me. I didn't want to give booze that power so I just stopped, without making a big deal out of it or telling anyone, even my wife! I do, however, keep a full bottle of whiskey in my cabinet, not so it's there to worship or dream about, but rather so I know, every f-cking day, I am actively choosing NOT to open it because I'm the boss, not alcohol.

My addiction almost killed me..woke up went to the bathroom and was pissing blood..sadly even though I quit drinking my neuropathy pain caused me to get hooked on opioids for many years..This is my first full year of sobriety.. The pain is still there , but 1 day at a time, I deal with it ..

Congrats on a year! I'm proud of you, and I truly mean that. I blew my back out, while still drinking, and had a short bout with opioids. Those things are tough. The months after them were some of the most difficult of my life - and I still had booze and cigarettes!

i like this guitar a lot! it sounds and looks great has a wide tonal range and contrasting fret board vivid skateboard part add some flavor (maybe a little too much, but the idea is cool though) and the song is also an interesting classical ballad from 60-70's😀

Hi Tim. Thank you for sharing! It is very inspiring... I can see your baritone guitar has a maple neck and i was wondering what is your experience om using non-traditional wood for necks?
@timsway
@timsway 6 ай бұрын
this is maple on mahogany, carbon fiber reinforced with a 2-way truss rod. I've made necks and fingerboards from oak, maple, black locust, plywood, hollow core door laminations, skateboard laminations, acrylic, pine, pallet wood, barnwood, chestnut... you name it! Anything is possible if you plan appropriately.

Thank you, Tim. I have build a couple of "scrap wood" guitars with great succes😀, but i´m a little concerned for the "long use" of more unstable wood for necks and with your experience maybe you have some do´s and don't. Thanks again for all of your "non-traditional" and down-to-earth content with great learning and inspiration! I struggled with two addictions for almost 30 years, always trying to master them myself until I finally came to see I could never help myself, so I reached out, in faith and hope, to Jesus Christ, and in His Mercy He saved me from my addictions in that instant. I know most people might resist doing that, but at the very least remember my testimony and "save it in your back pocket", you'll need it someday.
