Actually, it is open to the public, i.e. American citizens, who meet the educational requirements. I don't see how this is different from any other professional job. "Open to the public" means you don't have to already be an employee of NASA, the Air Force, or another government agency to be eligible to apply to the job.

I have always said that NASA should look to the Navy Submarine Service for applicants. They learned a long time ago to weed out the doers from the want-a-bes. For us food was the only issue. We made everything else.
@David-yo5ws
@David-yo5ws Ай бұрын
And maybe a bit of the Navy as well. We had to do a lot of that training, swimming and confined spaces, NuclearBiologicalChemicalDefence Training, Firefighting and some very rough seas. I was 1 of a handful that were not sea-sick during a 3 day storm one time. I couldn't even muster enough crew mates (11 plus myself), to get our daily beer issue from the Duty Officer. LOL. I'm sure he thought I was crazy. Some people can and some people can't handle the motion. But Ellie pointed out in the ZeroG Flight, that some immune from sea-sickness, were not immune from that event. So some may have the right education, but not the right biology for space. The chosen few certainly have my admiration.

Being a true professional astronaut will always be a one in a million shot for exceptional individuals. That ability to rise to the occasion and perform best when faced with danger and heavy over-stimulation is a true talent that few people have. It's a good thing that the leaders in the space programs around the world do their best to make sure that's the kind of individual they have in the seat at blastoff. For the rest of us, some day, when it becomes safe enough, mission planners will be looking for a more regular type of crew member (tourist, journalist, colonist, skilled technicians), then we will get our chance to go.

Naturally, I thought it was cool, and I asked about how I could submit an application. Sally looked up at me and frankly said that I could not apply. I am 6' 4" tall, which was too tall to fit in a trainer jet ejection seat.

I can't see "regular" people going to Mars until a well established base is running smoothly. Setting up a base on Mars will require a very skilled team of experts. Everyone will need multiple skills incase someone can't do their job for any reason. A single mistake could cost them all thier lives. Maintaining good physical and definitely mental health will be critical on a long/challenging mission. No time for tourists.

One item re the CHAPEA mission is that they are researching the needs of NASA astronauts on aa Mars mission. This will be a much simpler (and therefore more likely to get data desired) study. Private industry is where studies for larger, broader skillset, groups that will be needed for colonization. A more specialized and curated group (less than the NASA requirements, but still strict) is going to be needed for initial survey and infrastructure missions.

The best Astronaut plan for you, Ellie, is Mars Starship via SpaceX, where their plan is to make life multi-planetary, but you will still need to fill the job requirements to get to be on the list. Even then the first personnel will not be just anyone, you will have to be the best of the best to make the mission successful for the Mars Colony. NASA will always have restrictions simply because they are a pioneering program or is science-orientated. My advise to you is hop a rided with a billionaire; they have a history of bring servants with them to New Worlds.

With Chapea, teh ones to extend it beyond technical people would be SpaceX. NASA is exploration, thus the tech requirement, whereas SpaceX is planning a new Colony. The analog would be Christopher Columbus, Magelan and Marco Polo, on their expeditions they only brough the people needed to safely get them to the destination and back. It was many trips later when they started to bring Farmers and Families to start permanent colonies.

Mark my words, once a base has been established on the Moon, SpaceX and hopefully other companies will start recruiting ordinary people for populating and expanding the base. We're going to need electricians, IT guys, janitors, the works up there. Sure, you'll have to be in good health, but I think it would be wise to also start a medical division and accept people who have certain conditions like for example atherosclerosis, and find out which conditions are a bonafide no-go and which conditions have no effect on space travel. Of course these people would have to accept the risks and be fine with them but that would not be a problem as the fact they applied means they already accepted. This is a serious endeavour and no stone should be left unturned in finding out exactly what one can and what one can NOT do in space. On the moon base note: I suspect SpaceX will investigate building starships destined for Mars, on the Moon. it would greatly decrease the fuel needs as the gravity is 1/6th that of Earth.

NASA should really get us current and former sub guys, we're underwater in something equivalent to a real "spaceship" for 3-9 months at a time on deployment. And there's been enough of us that there's real data on crew component and makeup. Not to mention psych eval's and requirements. That would really give them a good starting datum on how colonist crew should be assembled.

When I was 25 I would have been a great candidate, high IQ , great physical condition having been a competitive Swimmer, but stuck in a little backwater country, NZ … a lot of our top rocket scientists actually helped NASA in the Moonshot and the Space Shuttle years. And NASA ignored them at their peril … see challenger the disaster … I think at the time America wasn’t interested in looking outside their own pool of keen candidates, it’s nice to see a change these days …

Ellie; if you ever want to go to the moon or beyond, you'll have to be able to fly whatever you see. Especialy as a reporter! Imagine: a space tourist, but he wants to pay installation of the new moon database center. First is to examine possible extension of the power source, which is nuclear. A professional astronaut flies him there and you got yourself a live story. It's a few miles outside the base and while your out there, some accident happens. There's just too much possible for to imagine a specific shit, but the astronaut is in serious trouble. You better fly him back to base now. You see, there is this thing called redundancy. And you don't use a troop transporter to examine the power plant. There's only three seats availlable and shit happens, any time. Without professional astronaut training, you wont be able to cover any news that you couldn't also do from here. The thing about every one of them having several doctor titles; they can finish each others jobs without wasting time on detail explanations. Matters can change when a functioning moon base reaches a critical size. There's not even an experimental base yet. So that may take one, probably two generations, before anything other than eggheads & supertourists get their chances. 🚀🏴‍☠️🎸

Don't feel bad Ellie. I am 63 years old with health issues including heart and kidney conditions. Heck, even if I had the money, I wouln't even be a good candidate to ride in Blue Origen like William Shadner did a couple of years ago, who in spite of being much older than me, is in good health. But here's an idea. Stay in touch with Elon and Space X. Maybe one day when the Starship is proven you might be able to hitch a ride on one to fly around the moon. You could offer to be the flight's reporter and write and video record about it. Hey, it could happen.

Or overly entitled Britney from Los Angeles who lives like barbie there - imagine her "ick" list? You have to filter out those unable to take the very dangerous and isolating realities of space. I think eventually there will be a time when they say, er yeah we need civil servants to take out the trash or menial tasks below astronauts, that's when we get the call. Of course they're only looking for highly educated, disciplined, mentally stable people for their earth-based lock-in! That mission is not going to be like going to a friend's house to watch the game! They're going to be developing protocols for extended moon missions and/or18-month Mars missions. Joe Blow from Kokomo would likely not be very useful in helping plan to the tiniest detail a mission like that while also doing science on lab creatures and/or other members of the crew. Everyone should also have considerable knowledge of the spacecraft, and its systems, should anything go wrong. and someone gets injured. That brings up another thing...medical problems. Say that one of the people locked in becomes extremely sick...and its the one with the medical degree!...everyone needs to have more than rudimentary training in first aid! These lock-ins will be working, sleeping, eating, exercising, and putting up with the annoying little quirks of, people that they will also be spending every waking minute listening to, looking at, and smelling. They will be far closer to those people than they would be to any spouse. Think about that seriously for a couple minutes! I also have a sneaking suspicion that there may be 'challenges' that com into the test chamber from a remote control room...like is done in a pilot training simulator. Once there's a functioning Moon or Mars 'bus', they can relax a bit and let regular people take the trip. Of course, we've all seen the fights on airliners...we ARE talking ten days to the Moon and 18 months to Mars and back, so...DO we ever want to open it up to everyone?!!

NASA must also have all the information from the Biosphere 1 and 2 trials that were done, I think it must have been about 20 years ago? The first 1 failed, as the scientists that set it up, did not take into consideration, the amount of oxygen that was consumed by the bacteria in the soil. They had to sterilize the soil and reset the test. I think the 2nd one was cut short, because of a break down amongst the social interactions of the group. They started to isolate and stopped working as a team IIRC.
