Tesla Solar Roof is a head of its time. When I investigated it I ran into the same issues that your homeowner ran into. I could not find an insurance company that would insure the Tesla Solar Roof. Insurance companies would insure the solar panels but not the solar roof. Good Faith, a Tesla Solar Installer in the DFW area, suggested Liberty for insurance. Ask your homeowner who will be insuring her Tesla Solar Roof.

A ground mounted system would have been a much cheaper option. They have the land for it and it would have been able to be optimized for direction and latitude.

Thinking of installing a solar PV system? Don't rely on the installer to honestly tell you what a proposed system will produce. Use NREL's PVWatts Calculator to predict what any proposed system will produce. I recently entered data for my 12.8 KW DC/10.0 KW AC system into NREL's PVWatts Calculator, and it predicted 71.2 MWH for four years, compared to actual 67 MWH. Part of the discrepancy is due to the system being down for about a month (2%loss) and from reduced solar radiation caused by atmospheric smoke from western and Canadian forest fires (1 to 2% loss?)

This is the second place in the U.S. where I have heard they don't require permits or inspections! The first was around Bonners Ferry, Idaho. The other owners also had they same mix of emotions about that: nothing is guaranteed to be a particular level of compliance when one buys and it may complicate selling the property (insurance for example). The Texas electrical grid is such a mess that I am not surprised there would be an increased charge (of $5K to $10K) for being able to sell power to the utility.

I installed a 12.8 KW DC ground mount system, limited to outputting 10.0 KW AC. The system came online the first of April, 2020 and has produced 67 MWH. Since the system began producing, the cost of electricity has increased more than 50%. SolarEdge estimates the revenue at over $6000, which underestimates future revenue, because the cost per MWH started around $91 and is now around $140. With substantial federal and state rebates, the system will have paid for itself in another one or two years. A Tesla system would have been twice as expensive or more. No way.

I’ve been trying to justify solar for our house in Utah for years. The cost just doesn’t work yet. I’m hoping in the next few years it will make financial sense as well as environmental sense. I doubt the Tesla Solar Roof will ever be cost effective. We will likely be doing solar panels when the time comes. Great content, Ellie.

Being completely off grid is certainly a different payback structure and investment. I can appreciate the early adopters thinking where spending extra on the ideal. Simon Sinek talks about the adoption curve of ideas. I would love to have the means to do something similar. People thankfully are different. Don’t feel threatened by someone with different ideas…it doesn’t mean you need to do the same.

Holy crap!!! That is expensive and way longer than a regular roofing job for sure. For sure the regular consumer will not be able to afford this. 3100 ft sq ft home? I could live in less that 500 sq ft. Just me so anyway nice video Ellie, TY once again to educate the public.

The gaf roof looks better than panels, but not as seamless as this roof. For me, if I ever get solar gaf may be an option. Thanks for mentioning them.

Minus the price, it looks great. It will get more affordable and honestly, compared to a premium roof, metal, slate, etc plus solar panels, it’s kind of even.

Installation was the problem that Solar City ran into. This is what forced Tesla to buy them out. FYI, Solar City was started by cousins of the Musk family. The demand was so high, they had to hire and train other companies to install the solar roofs. Some of these companies were either not trained well or decided they were going to do it their own way. The improperly install roofs caught on fire, and did damage to the structure. Solar City was sued by each customer who had a fire due to the solar roof. It was either go out of business, or have Elon buy them out. I think Elon helped them to get started. So, when they got in trouble, they went to hm for help.

No building permits or inspections sounds like a dream when building but, yeah, bit of a nightmare when buying something already built... Hope you got enough views for the sponsor to pay. I often wait to watch really interesting videos until I have a quiet moment with no stress and a cup of ☕ to really enjoy it.

Ellie here in California the electric company yas for the transformer and you pay a $150 fee for engineering.

So that's my question, can you just cut the power company off completely? Use what you generate and the electric company can take their meter and go ON DOWN THE ROAD, pun completely intended.

Yes you can. If you have enough sunlight. the On Grid feed in would have to be completely isolated from the domestic system feed from the power wall and solar. The only connection required is the mains charger to top the power wall off if low sunlight levels need a boost in winter. You may still need a stupid amount of certification. Mostly to prove total separation of the 2 power supplies. They won't like the drop in earnings from you going off grid. Standing charges might go up.

You can also do selfish solar where you don't put power back to the grid ever there is on link but can use power from the grid to charge the system if you run out. It's the design for people that believe the power company is the enemy but believe in back ups.

This project no sense to me. I can understand not wanting traditional panels on the south-facing roof at the front of the house for aesthetic reasons. However the drone shots show plenty of room for a south facing ground-mount behind the house, which could have been done for a fraction of the cost, while being easier to maintain, and easier to upgrade as well.

Imagine how long this roof will last! They put it on in 2024. They pass it on to grandchildren in 2040. The grandchildren replace it in 2075. Not because it is "bad" but because it is old fashioned. ;)

Yes, that is GAF's Solar Power Shingles method. Their solar shingles only make sense if you need to build a new roof or replace an old one. They are less efficient than Tesla's but the installation cost is probably less because any roofing company can install them. However, a solar installer has to complete the job installing the hardware/components.
