Dude nobody (reasonable) is mad at Dominik and Jamie for selling CapFriendly, we are mad at Washington for removing a valuable public resource. Another one will rise in its place, or a current one will improve to replace its niche, but in the short-term the Washington Capitals have deprived us of a valuable resource. Nobody (reasonable) is saying they aren’t allowed to, nobody (reasonable) is saying the founders shouldn’t sell. We are simply lamenting the loss of an easy-to-use resource.

I’m astonished that these guys are so nonchalant about losing CapFriendly from a fan perspective. I’m not upset that these guys get their bag, I’m upset that something that let me understand the sport I love so much is being pulled from under us. Yea we’ll survive but it seems like according to these guys we aren’t allowed to mourn this loss.

I think it's just because they've gone through the changing of the guard enough times that they know it'll be a small period of inconvenience followed by getting used to a new site. There's clearly a market for a site like this, so someone will make an effective resource to replace CapFriendly.

I was pretty frustrated with the section on CapFriendly because I legitimately don't understand what the Capitals stand to gain from buying the site, so I was hoping it would be explained in this episode. Instead, they don't really explain the situation and are just dismissive and sarcastic the whole time. So can someone in the comment section please legitimately explain to me (like I'm the dumbest person on earth) what the Capitals gain from buying CapFriendly? Steve mentions that Vegas bought a site and won a cup, but he doesn't explain why. What exactly do the Capitals gain from owning the site that they don't have from not owning it/it being public?

@Kabequah
@Kabequah 21 күн бұрын
I don’t know exactly but I can take a guess at why. First, just the fact it’s a resource less for other teams is an advantage. How important an advantage is debatable, especially since teams can simply make their own in-house (and probably already have some version of it), but still, exclusive access has value. Second, it is an already functioning platform that acquiring now saves time over building an internal equivalent, which also has value. Third, and this I think is the most important even though it is speculative, with the inclusion of advanced analytics in public sports discourse over the last few years (even if advanced stats have been around for a longer time), I think capfriendly would have likely been working on expanding player information to include advanced statistics beyond cap-specific information. This being public would significantly help every team with trades and determining what good player value dollar-wise looks like. Again, speculative, but if I’m right on this point especially, acquiring Capfriendly gives the Capitals an edge not only regarding the information they obtain, but by restricting access to that information for other teams. It creates an analytical gap between the Caps and other NHL teams and, given parity in the league, that user-friendly database can make a difference in signings, trades, and ultimately, the standings and playoff successes. Sorry for the long comment. Lots of what I wrote is speculative, but I too was annoyed that the panel didn’t explain the advantages the Caps obtain from this purchase. I’m probably missing quite a bit, but I doubt the purchase doesn’t add significant value given a sophisticated NHL franchise (and corporation) chose to make it.
@KevbotFalconhammer
@KevbotFalconhammer 21 күн бұрын
@Kabequah thanks, that all makes a lot of sense. It's also kinda what I figured, but what it doesn't quite explain (and something you touched on) is why all 32 teams don't just have their own internal department doing this same thing. I'm sure all the teams could find and hire other tech guys to do what cap friendly does. In fact, I could even seen an advantage of keeping cap friendly itself public, but then having your own internal team who utilizes that public information with the private information the teams have. I dunno, still feel like there's a piece missing here.
@Kabequah
@Kabequah 21 күн бұрын
@@KevbotFalconhammer It might genuinely just be a question of cost to build the product from scratch vs possibly paying a bit more for a product that 1. exists and (maybe more importantly) 2. already HAS the requisite data to begin being used right away. Kind of like buying a built house with the possibility of adding the bells and whistles you want while having all the essentials vs having a house built for you which will take much more time, require designing and then actual building. I assume that building the internal program is one thing. Gathering and inputting the data is a whole other beast and arguably the lion’s share of the work. That’s mainly why I think it’s a good purchase. Combined with the exclusivity obtained and barring access to other teams, it’s a great business purchase the more I speculate 😂

For the "Deserve to win a meter" to matter it'd need to be right like 70% of the time. The team that deserves to win needs to win the vast majority of games. That's not the case. The team that wins almost never deserves to by the metrics they use. So clearly they need to adjust.

Kinda niche and maybe not something Canadians are that exposed to, but you should produce pride cricket bat grips. I’d buy a couple in a second

Utah HC is the most boring name ever. Literally every other option is miles better and I don't understand why it even made it into this short list. What would you call the players? Clayton Keller is my favourite hockey clubber? HCer?

mitch marner mock trade: mitch marner to the NYR for jacob trouba kappo kakko gabe perreault a second round draft pick that becomes a first IF the rangers win the cup next year i think trouba addresses the need for a steady right shot D/toughness for the leafs, as well as kakko can develop into a solid middle 6 2way forward and perreault has star written all over him. this fills the rangers need for a dynamic top winger to give them a solid 1 2 punch with panarin there already

if the rangers can dump barclay goodrows contract to another team like Utah, i believe they will be able to resign shesterkin at around 14% of their cap as well. correct me if i am wrong

I dont get why people are eulogizing so heavily over cap friendly. Theres many better sites. Theres also an AI site where you can make a topic driven by AI(NHL advanced stats/cap breakdown) for example and itll give you any info you want

I still don’t understand what the caps get from this purchase, from my perspective, the only information cap friendly has is public, so it seems like they just bought a glorified spreadsheet
