The subreddit r/personalfinance gets posts almost daily that go along the lines of "Family/friend wants me to co-sign for their mortgage" or "Help, I co-signed and the other person isn't paying, how do I get out of it?" The answers given are ALWAYS the same "No, don't cosign." "You have to get the other person to refinance the house/car/Rolex watch in their name." It's like people don't do any form of research before making a stupid decision.

Being a cosigner or having a cosigner is always a poor arrangement. Eleven years ago, I was younger, had no credit, my dad graciously decided to cosign on a one year personal loan for a car for me. Each month, I was on time, but some months the payments were split, with one early in the month, the second was made later. When a partial payment was made early in the month, they would mail a letter to say the payment was late. My dad would come to my work to confront me over it, so I would be left explaining. Making the final payment in January 2010 was one of the best days of my life, never again though will I have a cosigner. Nor will I cosign for anyone.

I cosigned for my brother when he bought a truck in 2008. in 2010 he couldnt afford the payments anymore and stopped paying and the truck got repossessed. after that they auctioned off the truck and there was still $6k due so I had to come up with the money. I ignored it until they finally decided to try and take money from my paychecks so they gave me a deal for $3k to make it go away so I took out half my savings to get rid of it. ever since that day I never co-signed for anyone ever again!! its not worth it.

Hey I’ll get another loan to take you off this one. Hey can I ‘borrow’ your credit for this car note.” Heck no. And then if you have the audacity to say no, the deadbeat will tell everyone that you are being selfish with your perfect credit score abs refuse to share. Never again. Not even once.

Anthony is wrong on his advice in this situation. The debtor is gainfully employed at a school district. The bank won't sell the debt, they'll take him to court and garnish his check for the full amount plus legal fees. I'm surprised that they have offered a settlement when it's actually more profitable for the bank to garnish his wages...the bank loan manager is being lazy on this....

What is the statute of limitations on car repossession debt in Arizona? 4 years Statute of Limitations The creditor has 4 years from the time it repossessed your car to sue for a deficiency. If more than 4 years have passed, the statute of limitations has run.

Coming from a country where medical care is free and of a high standard, I feel a lot of sympathy for the Americans who have to go in massive debt or even bankrupt to be able to afford something that should be a human right in the Western World!

Him Bike one of my friends co signed his younger brother’s car. The bank was supposed to tell him the second it had a late payment. It was in the loan. They didn’t and he found out they were going to repo in 3 days! He ended up having to bring the loan current and the title and loan were transferred to him. He ended keeping the truck. His parents were super mad because he “took” his brothers car! You cannot win with this stuff

The problem is he is still counting 11 adult kids as if they are still part of his financial responsibility. 3 live at home and besides cosigning on a car loan he's paying medical bills as well Time to cut the apron strings. Unfortunately, my mom has done this for my siblings and they were well into their thirties still tied to her pocket book. Some she still pays their cellphone bill.

If they need a cosigner that means the bank thinks they can't pay...but $11k they literally just towed it to auction which is ridiculous as a dealer their used car lot could have got my uch more.

if they still have the car pay them and get the car back and sell the car once you get it. if they sold the car then try to get as much as you can and make offer if you can or pay it off before collections gets it then your good to go. if you can't because there's nothing left after 4 walls then there's nothing you can do. if I was papa pay it and have daughter pay half back to you

Wrong advice...Your credit is already effected..I would let it go to collections and then you deal with the collection agency...When doing so a part of the deal should be that they report it as paid off for a lesser amount on your credit report...DO NOT START MAKING MONTHLY PAYMENTS..

I'm completely ignorant about the debt collection world/laws/etc, but why wouldn't they just come after them for the 11k? That seems like a good ROI if I'm the creditor. Not paying? Ok, suing you and garnishing your wages. Why would I "negotiate" as the creditor? He owes them 11k; end of story. No negotiating; pay what you owe. I'm guessing there's something I'm missing that makes that option not possible, feasible, or profitable for the creditor?
