Appreciate how they handled this one & graciously guided the caller to think about improving her situation overall. I have a friend aged 50 who was this caller at 27. She never tried to do better, and 23 years later she's still working at the same daycare making the same $13/hr. And complains all the time about being POOR which she adopted at some point as an identity. I offered her a better paying career if she would relocate just 4 hrs away. She chose to stay put and not do better. Caller...don't be like that.

It also depends on the area. Rent around where I live in Texas will run you $700 for a 3 bd two bath so $27k isn’t poor living in this area. Average salary here is $46k though so it’s middle of the road here. Other areas $27k will keep you practically homeless lol.

For me, Dave's advice here is out of order, though he absolutely hits all the right points. My advice would absolutely be to ignore your parents and sell the car (assuming that doesn't create a dangerous situation). Expand your job search parameters to look beyond your current area, and when you find a better paying job with good career advancement opportunities, *then* you move out to be as close to your workplace as possible. In the meantime, though, hit those savings and debt payments really hard.

@@acolley96 that is not true - it would cause problems with someone like Dave Ramsey if she sells the car even though the parents disagree: if you live at 27 years old at home your parents will be more involved in your life. But then - moving out does not guarantee they do not try to get involved either. The personality and entitlement of the parents plays more of a role. And DR is at odds with most of human history. The mulitgenerational home was the norm for most of human history, often even young married couples lived wiht the parents. her moving out is the very recent development. But it did not sound like they were at odds. She had not even considered moving out so far, so they seem to get along nicely, in family a lot of advice is given off handed, and it may be that the price she is offered is not good. Now we know that Ramsey would throw out his kids for not "obeying" him, but not all parents of young adults are like that. Some can handle that like when an adult parent would live with them. There are house rules for the comfort of everyone and the expectation to contribute (financially or otherwise) And she may not be cut out to "have a career" maybe she would like to marry and be a stay at home mum with a bunch of kids. (in which case she needs to get strategic about finding a good husband).

How is this good advice? Making some assumptions $400 car payment less and then $600 more for a cheap apartment. She'll have no transportation and have at least 10% less money to save each month. The main mistake here was buying a new car with her low wage.
@new2000car
@new2000car 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. 600 more for the apartment then she’ll be driving for 300 a month with a “perfectly good” used car that needs a lot more incredibly expensive repairs. That’s 900 more per month. She should get a 2nd job, stay living at home, and in 2 years, hopefully less, be debt free. Then she’ll have a good 4 year old escape, paid for, and she could afford to live on her own or with roommate.
@new2000car
@new2000car 3 жыл бұрын
@ilumix led well maybe for a guy who can do all the work. Brodie's comment about her main mistake was buying a new car on that low wage. Very big mistake. However, it can't be cheaply fixed. I think it's better to stick it out. Every time someone like this trades cars, they lose a ton. Then add to that the repairs that crop up on a perfectly good used car. With all the hassle and losses, she won't come out ahead...or just slightly, not worth the time wasted. She could spend that time (trading/swapping/getting ripped off again) on a part time job. Also "getting out of that expensive car" will make her think that she fixed a grave mistake, and all is o.k. now. All is not o.k. She messed up big time, but should stay with this. An Escape is not a super expensive car (except on her salary, yes it is). If she bought a new Lexus, then maybe it would be worth trying to get out of it, but this car is halfway depreciated by now, just stick this out to help learn to never make this mistake again.

Only that she seems to get along well with the parents and she does NOT indicate that they are giving her a hard time about the selling of the car, they just give advice that is at odds with her ideas and the ideas of Ramsey. Who says her parents would be furious with her for selling the car ?? (maybe they just do not want her to sell at too low a price). Ramsey (the control freak) would not give a young adult living at home that liberty (to disagree with him), but her parents might be less controlling about it. She could save money, and does not have to put up with a roomate (whom she does not know, and which might not be as concerned about her like the parents). If she gets a cheaper car and it breaks down - family could lend her the car, and she has no stress going to work. It would be interesting if her staying at home is a joy or a stressor for the parents. She does not seem to be ambitious. Which is O.K. Then she needs to get intentional about finding a nice man to marry.

One of the biggest realizations I had upon graduating from college with my engineering degree, is that when you graduate, you need to be willing to relocate if need be. If you HAVE to stay in your home town and opportunities are limited then you are going to have a more difficult time. Worst case is you relocate with your degree for 5 years, get some experience and then try moving back closer to home. But sometimes you need to take that initial step and its very uncomfortable and scary.

I know in American culture it is almost impossible to admit you do not "want a career" - but maybe you have other goals like being well married and having a bunch of kids. (in which case you might get intentional about _that._ . either the career or the path to becoming the wedded wife of a good man). I also disagree to change the parents you seem to get along with just fine (you did not even consider moving out) for a roomate that you do not know, who might not be as interested in your well-being - and which you will need to afford your own place. Most of the time in human history young adults stayed with the family of origin, even young married couples. Ramsey is at odds with human history. @@mariamaneval2097 Hi Maria, oh wow... Assume you can sell your car more than the amount you owe. Are you going to ride a bicycle to work to take a train? If it's a cost effective then yes. If you really need a car for work purpose, you may sell it and buy a much cheaper car. In my opinion, you are not ready to move out yet because if you are unsuccessful in the real world, your parents may not take you back or it'd be awkward to move back. Put all the monthly expenses, moving cost, apartment and food to see how much do you need to survive if you move out. The landlord usually will ask you to pay 2 months ahead (one hold for down payment and the first month). Good luck.

She could probably pay both off in a little over a year if she lives on nothing and throws her entire paycheck at her debts. That and she seriously needs to increase her income.

@@dete503 There's nothing wrong with living with her parents if that works for all of them. She's working, she's bright and personable. And if she let some man "lead her" she'd get reamed for depending on a man by you little commenter twits. Besides there are few quality, trustworthy men--most bright women don't leave themselves exposed that way.

@@Elizabeth-yg2mg It's NOT working for her, that's why she's calling Dave. Living under her parents' rules and guidance is what got her here in the first place. I never once mentioned a man "leading" her. The only people leading her right now are her parents, and they're not doing a good job at it.

What if she just got out of a relationship you don’t know. She doesn’t have to have a man. Not everyone needs to have 2 kids by 27, in fact I would say that’s not a smart idea. She will find someone eventually

She's gonna need more than 13 an hour to move out and afford an apt on her own. she needs a new job pronto, also im confused as to how she has a student loan and is worried about getting it paid off yet seemingly didn't get a degree. Seems like she started college and stopped empty handed, if your gonna have student loans at least come out of it with a higher income. Theres lots of underlying issues here.

Did Dave forget about the car ? Like ya sell it to pay off debt but what about the car debt you'd still have 13k? I would at LEAST pay off half before even considering moving out. Work 90 hours a week youd never be home to see mom and dad anyways. Then move out with less than 5k in TOTAL debt.
