You can steer way better with two hands on the wheel. Shift, then straight back to the wheel. Better control and you'll be able to catch those back end loses.

This, and maybe look at the seating position. It looks like you stretch your leg completely when pressing the clutch. I was teached that the leg should always be a bit curved still. This also brings you closer to the steering wheel. When sitting with your back in the seat, your wrist should be able to lay on top of the steering wheel. Then it will never feel out of reach. And last but not least, if the steering wheel is straight when going straight, it will give you an indication where the wheels are pointing. If it is not straight to begin with, it is hard to know how to correct. Love to see the car back in action again, it is made to drive!

I came to the comments to say exactly this. Always 2 hands on the wheel unless you are shifting. Also, you may not need to downshift. Use the torque of the engine to carry you out of corners. It doesn't need to be at 5k rpm to get you out of a corner. I noticed I got faster on the track when I downshifted less, and this was with a 375 rwhp corvette.
@Jgffvjkuhbffgbjjugcdrsh

Came to say the same. Also, try not have a hand turned past 12 or 6. Should always feel like a hand is pushing the wheel up from the opposite side you’re trying to turn to. Pulling the wheel never has as much control as pushing. If that makes sense :) Awesome work so far.

A quicker steering ratio would be a good idea. i'll be a bit heavier, but then, that's what power steering is for! A proper dog-box will help too, they're not for the feint hearted though! Looking at proper pedal postioning for those nice blippy heel&toe downshifts might be plan too!

Another thing Rich: I see you taking your foot off of the clutch and sticking it down to the floorboard to brace yourself--- you cannot do this; it's a bad habit. You gotta tighten up your seatbelt so that you're not sliding around in your seat and it holds you firmly in place. You need to have your feet free at all times. You shouldn't be relying on your foot to brace yourself in corners. Sinch down that harness to the point where it's uncomfortable; once you're flying around corners, that will actually be very comforting because it holds you in place very well. It's counterintuitive, but it's important.

My racing driving instructor told me the exact opposite, to brace myself with the left foot if I don't need clutch. He agrees to adjusting the belt almost too tight though.

I'm not a racing expert by any means. what I notice watching you drive and comparing it to my limited rally experience and watching other people drive in a racing situation, you take you foot completely off the clutch pedal and put it to the side, rather than leaving your heel in place and hovering your foot over the pedal. I also see you leave your hand on the shifter even though you are not shifting, it would be better to get both hands back on the wheel and only grab the shifter when you are ready to shift. Just my observations and I might be wrong, just trying to help

Firstly great to see the Debocho put to proper more frequent work after many years of following the build! Secondly as someone who also used to swear by one hand driving I must recommend you to try and get rid of the habit. It will feel weird at first, crossing your arms etc. but after couple of close calls and corrections you will be glad you had two hands on the wheel and proper grip, which is the real advantage. Atleast thats how I learned to prefer it. Havent had a sinlge steering wheel slip-up since moving to two handed driving. Also learning to shift at proper times helped a lot with the transition, selecting gear before corner and sticking to leaves steering and throttle control as the only concerns, for both focus and physical input. Edit: driving definitely looking better on the last driving chapter tho!

1, remove the dead pedal or any space next to the clutch pedel to place your foot it maybe uncomfortable but you'll live and learn with it 2, the shifter is always going to be in the same place as you left it so there is no need to hold on to it 3, you have far more control with 2 hands on the wheel, let go of the shifter 4, most importantly have fun but the first 3 are about safety so... safety 3rd?

Another thing that will help you get much faster track time is to keep your speed all the way to the corner and then brake really hard right at the end. It's a delicate gamble and you'll get better with it over time... You like to just let off the throttle and coast/ slow down as you approach a corner, and that's really slow. You gotta be hard on the gas and then harder on the brakes to really push it to the limit... But I understand: the adrenaline is pumping and the engine is roaring.. the turbo's are singing and you're just taking it all in and enjoying the car rather than really driving it just yet. That will come later, once you're over the honeymoon phase of how cool everything is.

Something I preach a lot, ergonomics in a project car are CRITICAL. That means the pedals have to be in the right place, wheel, seat, shifter. So so so many times I see old cars with modified pedal setups, e-throttles and the like that have things in weird places etc. For one it ruins the enjoyment of driving the car, but it also makes it difficult to drive. If I have a car and I can't comfortably heel-toe, shift, steer etc, it's gotta be modified so it works. On the other hand, you should have also had your clutch foot going for the clutch at which point, you'd probably notice what's up haha

Beautiful job threading the car between those two tents! I would have panicked for sure! Regarding foot and pedal placement, I've found fitting a foot rest back into the footwell like a normal car helps a LOT. I can easily move my clutch foot to find a point of reference. Race cars normally get stripped out, so your footwell will be mostly empty space with no reference point.

Great content Rich! Keep it up and stay safe out there. Shifting tip... think of your semi shifting, its all about shifting at the right RPM's. You don't need to fully depress your clutch, sometimes you can just quick pop the clutch if you shift at the right time and control the RPM's with the throttle. I have run/raced a 1967 GTO (which is why i started following your channel in the first place) with an M21 and M22 transmission. Went through 1 Centerforce clutch in 10 years, broke the M22 and had to swap to the M21 (for now). Learned to shift the hard way is what i'm saying. I also drove a peterbilt for years and it all works the same! Control the RPM's and paddle the clutch with fast shifting. Just the thoughts of an old guy! Keep taking the classes and pushing yourself to be the best@ Good on ya! Keep it up and have fun. Let us know when you are going to pikes peak, i'd love to come meet you in my home state!

Hey Rich, Glad it ended well. That must have been terrifying in the moment when you thought the clutch was the brake. Normally I don't make a comment in my everyday life when another is relating their tale of woe. I just nod and smile. Even though something very similar may have happened to me as well. There was point in my life for a couple of years that it was possible for me to be operating half a dozen entirely different vehicles in one day. Some were all hand. Some were hand and foot. Some steered with a wheel. Some didn't. Some were automatic. Some were manual. One time I was in a modern vehicle with all the bells and whistles. I made a very slight error. Not even remotely the same experience you had. I caught one heck of a tongue lashing. It was for the same reasons you stated. No one was in danger. I wasn't driving through a camping area. She's long gone now. I am glad you uploaded and stated the facts about being more fully aware of what we are in control of. Truly enjoy this channel and all your efforts.

Growing up, my dad usually had at least three or four cars/trucks (yes, they all ran and drove). I remember that we would be in one of them going somewhere and it would start raining (I'm from the Pacific Northwest, so it rains a lot) or he would need to honk the horn, or some other secondary control, and it would take him a couple of seconds to remember where the particular switch or lever he needed was. (This didn't happen frequently, but every once in a while.) He would usually say something to the effect of, "I haven't driven this car in a while." I remember thinking, "It seems weird not remembering where your controls are." Well, now I'm a middle-aged man who owns six vehicles, and every few months, I'll be driving one of them that I haven't for a few months and I'll go to turn on the wipers or something and it will take me a couple of seconds to remember where the control I need is. 😁 Kinda funny how that works. This is all a long way of saying, "I feel your pain" when it comes to driving a bunch of different vehicles and not being completely familiar with exactly where all of the controls are. I don't race, but I think you're on the right track realizing you need to become more familiar with exactly where all of your pedals are in the Audi. Anyways, keep up the good work, Rich! You and your team make great videos that are entertaining AND informative to watch. Many try to get the right balance of both, and few succeed. Since I've watched the video where you blew up the Detroit 12V71, you have consistently put out well-balanced videos that are the right combination of both. 👍

You definitely need to work on your shifting.. You spend a lot of time with the clutch down in between gears. It's hard to learn the shifting RPM's without a lot of drive time, so that's gonna be tough. You should take it to the back roads like that a lot more often. Like for 10 hours (spread out) in between track days.

If you ever want to expand on your simulator. That'd be cool to see. Making button boxes out of microcontrollers is relatively easy.

Gotta get yourself planted in the 55, itll drop half a second of each run if youre not worrying about keeping your ass in the seat. Just gotta sit in the Quattro, no replacment for sitting in the driveway shifting up and down the gears a billion times. Shit happens and no one got hurt thats the big point. Cheers 🍻

It’s crazy how your mind and feet get used to certain vehicles . I have always driven sticks for my daily drivers but recently I kinda inherited a minivan with an automatic and have been driving it some lately. When I pull up to a stop sign my left foot is just instinctively stomping the floor looking for the clutch that isn’t there and for a split second your brain has that oh shit moment until you go….oh yeah minivan, no clutch 🤣

Two hand on the wheel, never hold the top like that and move your seat a bit closer, it will put you in a lot more control if things to go wrong and we all want you to be safe and go home in one peice. 👍

Does the car not have a kill switch yet? PPIH will require one the driver can reach and safety crew can reach externally.

Might be a good idea to put it on a aligmment rack it looks like your steering wheel is not perfectly straight thats a big no no in racing. But that is going to be a beast once the kinks is dialed out👌😄

It's got a QR. The car might be perfectly aligned, but if you put the wheel on crooked, it'll look off.

i think a handbrake would be a safe idea 💡. in case you miss your pedals again, you can at least yank on it to quickly stop.
