I actually was able to hold a World Record on one of the german stages for about a month, and one thing i learned at the end is that in order to get to those times, you are either braking as much as the car will allow you to without overreving the engine or locking up the tires, and on throttle there is only maximum Bananas, and if the tires don't grip up right away you already lost time, it took me 3 days an several mental breakdowns before keeping a run together, and that was on tarmack, which i would consider to be a bit easier in the Group B monsters

I understand what you mean. Best placement i got was i think Nr 15 with the evo (top 100 on most courses in most classes) and its even more of that with the Keyboard i can tell ya. Either go super fast with the best car tuning or crash n restart. Mental breakdown if you crash close to the finish line because you "wanted to much"

@@savereport8788 I remember when i had DiRT 3 on steam i almost broke actual legit WR(cause there were some cheaters at top places) for one of stages in monaco for group B with the Audi Quattro S1 and i played it with keyboard with basically only abs on and nothing else. It was fun but also hard and intense cause the stage was quite technical with very little room for error in first half of stage and yeah i had a couple mental breakdowns aswell until i gave up and was basically #3 in world only beaten by two guys who were about 0.2s faster than me

I don't understand this comment section at all, so many comments echoing the same 'top of the leaderboards are all sweaty nerds with cuts and cheap tricks'. I competed in both World Series events and got to the quarter finals in both iterations. This stage was part of one of the qualifiers and literally nobody cut this course anywhere and they would've if it gained any time. That dumb nascar bank gains basically no time and it's risky to get a proper exit with it. Show me the cheap tricks, cuts and weird 'rock bounces' or wall bounces people are talking about because there is nothing special on this stage. His driving was alright but he went wide a lot meaning he never got the power down early enough from what I was able to see between the jump cuts in the editing. I love his videos but some of the viewers really do think that if he cannot get close there must be some sort of reason, well this time the reason was that he just was not very fast.
@zackster1697

Biggest thing holding you back, specifically on this stage, is your lack of using shortcuts. The inside cliff of the corner at 7:21 can be used as a bank to both shorten the distance traveled and carry more speed. All things considered the last run would have been top 100 if these skips didn't exist.
@varyagace

This is what I've been thinking the entire video. His run WAS fast, but the fastest guys are driving this game as if it was Trackmania. Finding every single possible cut and shortcut they can utilise to shorten the distance. If you don't know these, you will be a few seconds short every time.

Watched through some WR stages on YT & those guys are incredible, they've definitely memorised the stages to the point they don't need pace notes & maximise literally every corner & know exactly where to place the car. "Hey guys, DiRT Rally admin here" 😏 This was a great attempt! Your biggest challenge was in the leaderboard you chose to beat. New Zealand is a base-game location and Group B is a base-game car class, both of which are ultra competitive. In addition, New Zealand is one of the trickier stages due to the narrowness of the roads. Still though, wht Top 100 pace there, you could get a World Record on quite a few other places, at least for a little while. Try out some Wet weather leaderboards, or ones on DLC locations (All the DIRT Rally 1 locations + Scotland), or in a DLC car class (Group B RWD, 2000cc 4WD, F2 KitCar) and that #1 is certainly achievable. 👍

Yes this. Back in Dirt 2 (I know, its a bit more arcade-y but still) I was one of the fastest guys around. At that point you know every single thing on every track that can go wrong and how much attention it needs to avoid it. For the rest its driving on the absolute limit with knowing details like when to upshift for better traction out of corners for example and how much you need to slide in certain corners. Its so much fun though once you get the hang of perfect runs.

Comes down to disciplines..rallying requires right foot where you wouldn't dream of using on tarmac Saw alot of corners where you're full sending on some tight opening bends where could be feathering up the momentum as the corner opens to carry alot more exit speed same for entry into alot of corners could carry alot more pace through a good few sections by finding the right line to carry the car into the bend sideways and throttle n gearing the car to steer more than steering input. You're an amazing tarmac driver and I love watching you immerse into the shadow realms of off-road. Keep up the sweat. ♥️

i don't know about this particular stage, but many of the world records in the game are achieved by cutting the tracks in ways that should be physically impossible irl. i remember watching the wr replay of a stage in greece. a few hundred meters after the start, instead of following the right left on the road, the guy intentionally steered left into a huge ditch on the side of the road, drove through the ditch for 50 meters, then jumped out of it and onto the road again. it was pretty funny to see and he probably saved 3-4 seconds by doing that alone

When it comes to stage records, the suspension and gearing setup make a _massive_ difference. You can look at the leader's setup and watch their replay for an idea of what you need to do to get top times.
@mack4691
@mack4691 Жыл бұрын
I didn't know the suspension was that integral. Any tips or principles for setting that up?
@RavenRedwood
@RavenRedwood Жыл бұрын
@@mack4691 in my experience configuring suspension is a similar process to gearing (or even like setting steering degree on tarmac) you essentially want to have the travel and springs set for the max load the car will experience on that stage; any more 'give' than what is necessary just reduces precision and control. (use your judgement of course, for example if the stage has a section with deep ruts do I really need to sacrifice stiffness for that to keep speed or can I find a good line without loosing control?) If the game supports it you can use the telemetry data on your best run as a guide for what you need to adjust. Unfortunately if the game doesn't have replay data you'll just have to experiment, which is why checking the leader's setup can save some time, just note that camber/toe can also make a big difference but since it's more of a driver's preference, the leader's settings may not suit your style 👍

In the 80s they would struggle in tight hairpins up to the point of doing a thousand point turn.

yeah, im pretty sure you are right. i still use the handbrake though. jimmy did a very respectable attempt here, h pattern with clutch, heel and toe shifting and at first no handbrake. im not sure if he used one later, i couldnt see one on his wheel setup. (but he did jokingly mention the strategy was to handbrake every corner). these cars can be VERY understeer prone.

Not sure if it works on the forward version of this stage but I know on Te Awanga Sprint Reverse there's a fairly substantial cut that the game doesn't reset you for that if you get right can gain you almost 10 seconds, that might be what was going on with the top guys on this stage

Really not a bad attempt jimmer! One thing that makes a huge difference though is setting the final drive to the lowest always, big increases to acceleration, then it's just a matter of matching gear ratios to the stage/rally type.

On another note, those stages around that hilly light-gravel area is so much fun to slide around in DR2

One of my proudest sim racing achievements is getting a world record on dirt rally II. I got it on the Jagodino stage of the polish rally in the lancia 037. I even did it on the wet game setting.

from my (controller) experience, its best to use the clutch often to keep the engine in high revs, and clutch kick often. this way you get more power to the wheels when you need it.

There was a tool for the original Dirt Rally where you could compare your time to the best and get an overheard trace of the two runs. Don't know if they've brought that forward but that would be perfect for the sweaty runs.

Awesome fun to watch, Jimmer! I wonder if the fastest people were maybe using SQ gearing, could that account for a bit of speed gain? Either way, I'm in awe of the times! I'm generally quite pleased if I get within 45 seconds of the record...
