If he focused on personal ambitions in road racing, you mean? He is still a very much engaged superdomestique. And with track background he could be like Viviani in his prime, but even better.

I’ve “kinda” had my eye on Pippo Ganna since I first saw him at the Milton Velodrome in Ontario, Canada, back in January, 2020, just before the Covid “shit hit the fan”. He destroyed everyone else at that event. I like him, because I to loved riding track (at the Montreal 1976 Olympics velodrome), and, like me, he’s a “big” guy. Unlike me, he’s actually got talent . . . so, as I approach 80, Pippo gives me vicarious pleasure.. . And thank YOU, young man, for your very insightful analyses of the races.

It was no surprise after his bunch sprint win in Tour de Wallonie. There, the first moment I saw the results, I thought he won the stage with an attack, but it was an impressive sprint. If he had more experience with bunch sprints, he could start in a better position and beat Groves. Looking forward to the next sprint.

@@feedbackzaloop prize money and UCI points still apply indeed. So why taking 1 sprinter and 2 or 3 lead out train men out of 8 for 4 stages over 21 ? I totally agree with the title. Perhaps this surprise comes from his winning experiences on the track? Looking at him sprinting from above, he still has a different style than other sprinters, for example Van Aert or Philipsen, he stays more composed with the body and the bike sways much less left and right. Just look at the vast difference in posture and driving in the sprint of Groves himself, elbows wide...

Kaden Groves appears to be on track to match his teammate, Philipsen's feat of 4 stage wins in a GT, if he can survive all the high mountains to come. Of course, the sprint competition is not at the same level as the Tour where we had Cavendish, Ewan, Groenewegen, Jacobsen, Pedersen, van Aert and Bahaus amongst others - though most of them left the Tour prematurely due to one reason or the other. Of the main competition here, Molano, Coquard and Menten all suffered crashes today, so the only surprise was to see Ganna almost Pip(po) Kaden.

@@julienr.3436 I remember seeing this from time to time. It's not super weird. In reality this could've been an Evenepoel vs Roglic vs Ayuso sprint as a bit of action before the actual sprint. You can design a flat stage to have something for the GC riders, just like you can design a mountain stage to have something for the points classification by putting the bonus points early. In that respect it's clever to do, making every stage have something for each classification.
