There at the end you said that you said your hand was "full of wood and ore," which would have been misleading, but arguably true, but you actually said it was "all wood and ore" which was just false. Of course lying is part of the game, but I don't think it's fair to blame blue and black for not trusting you. For all they know you're on 8 VP's with 2-3 dev cards, which is just as scary as purple.

Tbh whether or not it counts as a lie is open for interpretation. It is a technically a lie cause it's not litterally 'ALL' wood ore. But frequently people generalize things and say 'all', 'full of', when it's not 100% but the vast majority. Like "wow, only 6s rolled this game" when 4 out of 5 first rolls are 6s. In fact, he is revealing what his hand is generally speaking looking like (without giving the exact details) - so blue was most likely to get a wood or ore. But still, it's technically a lie. In contrast to the common response that Dylan would give when someone would ask 'dylan do you have a sheep' Dylan would respond 'I spent my sheep' which is technically true, although he didn't spend all of it. Generally speaking, though, when someone says 'I spent my sheep', they mean they spent all of it. But technically, that's not the meaning. Tl;dr Dylan technically lied in a statement that could be interpreted as truthful, while you generally want to technically speak the truth that can be interpreted as a lie. It's easier to defend. Still, I think Dylan should've responded more emotionally about the sheep instead of only responding to the lying accusation. If he was like "damn it, you stole litterally the only sheep, I really needed that. Now I litterally have only wood-ore". Then people would see dylan as sort of a victim of bad luck and by now saying litterally, it puts a contrast to his previous statement that was a generalization and not a straight up lie.

@@ZZubZZero I think we as a community need to decide what we think is okay. IMO there should be/and usually is generally accepted etiquette that lying isn't okay. Bluffing, and lying are different. Underplaying your own position or overstating someone else's seems like a bluff. Outright lying should be frowned upon. I think part of the reason why the non-binding rules exist in tournament play are so that we can maintain integrity of the community. However, if we choose to self-regulate by not playing with liars, then we will open up many doors to the gameplay that haven't been previously explored. While the lines of what is and isn't acceptable are likely impossible to define thourouhly, I think we can agree on some things. Dylan is an ambasidor for us and our game, and he should try to act in good taste when possible. We don't want a scumbag at the top to represent us. This seemed in poor taste. That said, I still support him and believe has room to grow.
@ZZubZZero

@@808pierce Disagree. Bluffing is lying. Lying is bluffing. Not always the same exactly, but they're very close. Why shouldn't you be able to lie? You can say whatever you want, whether or not people believe you is up to them. Plus, how are you gonna check if someone's lying? And if you'd make it illegal how are you gonna enforce it?? As we saw, lying doesn't always help you but can even hurt you. The self regulation is already there. If you lie about what cards you have and you get caught, your reputation for the game is shot.

@dojando6003
@dojando6003 Жыл бұрын
In Poker manipulating is basically the MAIN mechanic of the game to change the outcome of. (if you leave card counting out) So it is accepted there because that IS the game. In Catan manipulating, lying and playing dirty is not very much accepted because it's not what this game is ultimately about. There are way more mechanics and strategies to get to your win. And while lying and manipulation can be a way to get there, most Catan players play the game to have fun, making the best of their positions, playing on their strength and also playing and having fun together. However since this is a cahs tournament, there is nothing wrong in playing dirty. It should be expected in any cash tournament I think. 🤷‍♂️
@Funglutton
@Funglutton Жыл бұрын
@@dojando6003 I would strongly disagree with "manipulating" not being a core part of the game. "Lying", maybe, but manipulation is there whether it's a family gathering or a competitive cash tourney. Table talk is a fundamental aspect to the game because trading is a fundamental aspect of the game. Just like in life, there are gentle and masterful ways to manipulate. Parents manipulate children benevolently to manage their mood in the moment and to grow in a healthy direction. Councillors and therapists gently manipulate their clients towards healing. We all manipulate our friends to help them relax in troubling times, or to steer them away from bad decisions if we see them going off track. Manipulation is a fundamental part of human nature. Now, you don't have to lie to table talk effectively. So I think I agree with the general premise you put forward that lying or bluffing isn't necessary in Catan and so is frowned on. However, the official rules themselves accept that lying is part of the game: "future trades are non-binding". On reflection, I do think that there is a subtle difference between bluffing and lying. Bluffing is misrepresenting your position (your cards, your ability to win). In Catan, lying is when you say you'll do something and have no intention of doing it, or are not committed to following through on the agreement. I would argue that Dylan "bluffed" in this situation. He misrepresented the state of his hand to disincentivise getting robbed. As others have commented, a cleverer bluff than "My hand is ALL wood and ore" is "My hand is FULL OF wood and ore". But either way they're both bluffs, in my opinion.

I think they definitely pounced on you about "lying". They put the threat on you and it definitely influenced a crucial block at the end. That being said, purple trying to turn it into some catan morality lesson about "lying throughout the game" at the end was dumb. You misled them once sure but to say you lied and that's the reason you lost is just inaccurate. Also dirty mono is 100% part of the game . I can't imagine getting on someone's case in a tournament for actual money the way they did this game. Everyone's wrong and everyone's right. It made complete sense to believe you at the end and I think blue was salty and blundered that block. Purple was stronger on that rotation for sure, but also their 6 gets unblocked anyway so it's still a tough situation. Deception is part of the game but you can't always expect everyone to agree with that. I think they really took advantage of the situation and it put a huge target on you. It very much reminds me of the show Survivor where the people you vote out are the ones who vote for the winner. You can't just be ruthless and expect everyone to respect that and vote for you to win at the end. You always have to play the board, but also the people too. Regardless, great game and I still think you're the goat.

Not sure about the end, but purple wasn't dumb I think. I do feel like it was an overreaction for sure, but also that purple used it really well to manipulate the others. Not sure how purple actually felt about it of course, but he really played the players well.

TBF, if they know you and watch your videos they know you lie more often than just this 1 time, so I'd say maybe try to cool it a little bit with that.. You're a good player so you shouldn't need it.

From an objective stand point, black and blue were not in a position to win, and they knew that. By the time it was end game, based on table talk+circumstances, black was more willing to see purple win than you when both you and purple were strong

shouldve mono'd the brick instead of sheep. wouldve got you about 7 ish brick that removes any road building from your opponents and gives you road. by buying 3 devs when you only need one knight, you screwed yourself. sometimes mono should be played simply to remove cards from your opponents, rather than boosting what you have

I agree with the players completely and have said this before about some of Dylan’s moves. Dylan’s style even after the game just doesn’t make him come across trustworthy. If you want to play that way, fine, but some players just aren’t going to want to work with you after that and they explained that to you calmly after the fact.

It's a shame that the one lie in the beginning haunted you throughout the game. When it's 1/6 chance in getting sheep you were saying what they were probably going to get, my friends and family do it all the time. If they had just pulled an ore or wood than purple wouldn't have won so easily.

To suggest that Dylan lied about his hand is ridiculous to me - there was only a 1/6 chance that the sheep gets stolen. I think Trissie lacked the tracking required to understand what Dylan was telling the table. Statistically, you were going to get either wood or ore when stealing from Dylan on that turn. Maybe Trissie was just taking Dylan's comments too literally, but I think suggesting Dylan was fundamentally a liar during that game was poor sportsmanship rather than fair table talk.

Yes Dylan if I was in there position I would have done the same since you lied. I understand that some people are ok with it, but for me this is the worst offense and purple deserves the win.
@maazzzable
@maazzzable Жыл бұрын
You downgrade your position way too much all the time it's a good beginners killer strategy. But when you start playing with some more good players they just catch up on it. You need to interact more with the table and work more deal NB,insurance,non steal, future something,extortion. Thing is when you get a small lead you dont do these deals and try do them when your way too far ahead or you start trading when your clearly leading wich is not working. You can also make deal like I wont be taking road this game wich make you way less of a threat. But you don't do that thinking that you are cuting your options but if thst what it take for black to steal from purple I would do it
@luobronjames
@luobronjames Жыл бұрын
tbh, Dylan doesn't usually lie but he does something worse which allows him to get an edge over normal players: Extortion. This is actually worse than lying. But both are obviously legal in the game of catan which is what makes Dylan such a good player.
@luobronjames
@luobronjames Жыл бұрын
Actually thinking about it, some extortion is actually lying. You could say "Trade me brick for a non-block" and the player agrees but you were never going to block them in the first place. THAT is extortion AND lying which Dylan often does but it's the only way to separate the greats from the good

I’d have to side on the rest of the board as well about the lying situation. You have to build credibility in negotiations and by misdirecting, misleading, and getting caught in shady acts, you allowed purple to become the shining star on the board. Also, one thing I’ve learned from my day job and saw from this game is you played way too advanced for the board. One guy didn’t even know what insurance was, big red flag. That means you shouldn’t try to make too complex of trades otherwise you’re going to make people way too uncomfortable. You played well and hopefully you make it to the semifinals!

This is the Dylighted I don’t like. I wish he would have just taken it on the chin and said you caught me I was trying to pull a fast one but he just doubles down and then doubled down again if he is called out on it. I think it really hurts him in tournaments. I wouldn’t trust him if I was in a tournament with him.
