Жыл бұрынI am back from Adepticon 2023 and over the post con crud, which unfortunately turned out to be Covid...BUT, I have some good stories that I brought back including this tale of an eBay rescue that I picked up for $15 making its way all the way to Golden Demon USA '23. Did I think I would ever win with this mini? No...but what happened was still a massive surprise to me!

I like best about this the contrast between the bloody red armour and the blue-ish white details. The blue-white look like mist on a night with a full moon, which makes it look like the vampire is about to engage in battle with a highly stylized backdrop. The red armour being completely unaffected by night-time lighting helps sell that this is a supernatural entity. It also reminds me of how they painted Dracula for the cover of Castlevania II: Simon's Quest.

I know finding the time to paint between family, work, and just affording it has kept me away from it for so long. Then I’ll try to start and get inside my own head and quit because I think it will look horrible. I started watching you and was in awe of your talent. Hearing you talk about how you need to improve helps me realize I’m not going to be doing fantastic work right out of the gate and I need to practice practice practice. Thank you.

I am nowhere near fussy and fiddly enough to even contemplate a competition on that level! Much as I'm not a competition oriented painter, I'm considering entering a miniature or two in this year's Reapercon here in TX to see what happens, as it turns out. I don't anticipate anything, but this video gave me sound reasoning as to why I should.

I am entering the Reaper Mini quarterly painting competition for the first time. Thank you for some inspiration, I kinda needed it. I've already seen several painted examples of the mini that must be used for the competition that are much better than my skill level. One of which the artist said isn't good enough to win. Yikes! But that's okay! I will do my best. I will enter it. I will enjoy the process. And hopefully, I get better all-around in the meantime! Thanks Casey! You are a mensch!

I 100% agree, entering for the fun and experience vs the win is what you should be doing. If you win, bonus! I was so scared to enter a cosplay contest at DragonCon because I didn't think I was good enough. I decided, what the heck, it's for the experience as I don't have money to go back again, might as well pack it ALL in as much as I can. I did end up wining 1st, but just the experience and talking to the other competitors was the very best part! Do it for the fun and the passion, never worry about being the best

To be fair, the paint that was on the mini was pretty good, a little thick in places and overall dusty, but I liked the metallic colors. Not a bad place to end up!

GREAT video with an awesome take away. I never enter contests. When I was in school (pre-internet) I was the only kid that drew. I won everything. When I got out & saw what other artistic people were doing, I realized that I wasn't that great. I didn't have to be to be better than people who don't do anything. So I stopped entering things. Never occurred to me that feedback & experience are the true gifts of growth. DUH! Thanks for this video. I needed a good dose of common sense. 😁

Hey thanks for the motivation. I'm working on a mini for the monthly OnePageRules painting competition which will be my first entry in any competition. I'm hitting a critical point where I've got a week left and I'm so far from finishing it's tempting to just give up, but I see how valuable the experience could be just getting feedback from other painters and I want that. You said you felt like you were already becoming a better painter before you even knew you passed the first cut and if I give up I feel like I'm choosing not to be a better painter. I'm not out of time yet.

Mostly it was the cohesiveness of the paint to story, like I mentioned, the paint job doesn’t make sense unless it’s explained. Nothing in the environment is telling the viewer why it looks the way it goes. The red armor looks good but the edge highlights need to be bigger, I did them as thin as I possibly could thinking that would make it look nicer, but I was surprised to hear that bigger edges, as long as they are clean, are welcomed. The face could have used more lines of contrast on the forehead, just to define that brown line, and the bats in the hair could have used more attention, although as far as story went, that actually made sense for them to be mid transformation. What it really came down to is that I needed to spend more time on making the environment and model more cohesive and spend more time making each piece of the model mean something important to the overall piece. The feedback I got as far as quality was better than I expected, the airbrushing looked good and the face, which were the things I spent the most time working on and what I wanted to make look the best.

lol it depends on who's painting it if you are painting it it might have a shot if i tried then not a chance lol since the last time i painted a figurine was as a 10 year old at summer camp

I put 4 entries into the case. 3 of them because they were cool, and 1 to try to win a pin. The 1 that was a serious entry I spent 116 hours on. Most people didn't give my work a second look. And I didn't get any feed back on how to improve. That last one is the reason that it isn't worth entering Golden Demon again, for me at least.

Casey, You're a much better painter than you give yourself credit for you take painted and alot of the time damaged mini and turn them in to pieces of mini art and you are now going for GD, I can't wait to see what awesome model you will paint for it. you have a year to find and paint the perfect model and I for one will be there watching your videos and supporting your journey 😁

Superb stuff. So refreshing to watch a KZfaqr talking positively about the latest Golden Demon tournament, and not crying about how they didn't win anything and how the competition should change so they give out as many trophies as is needed before they do win. This was extremely motivating, and I loved all the positives you raised about submitting an entry even when someone like me knows their skill level isn't the best. You made just participating sound awesome.

Congrats on making it past the first cut. I don't think you let on in the Paint Bravely episode that you'd had success in the competition outside of your enjoyment in participating. The video gave me the impression that you put maybe 20 hours into the model, but I'm guessing that's pretty far off the mark?

Thank! Yeah we didn’t talk about it too much on the podcast other than the general enjoyment, it was just good to be there again! I actually only had about 8-10 hours into this mini, I really wanted to focus on the airbrushing and get feedback from that specifically, which I definitely did, the face was a few hours of that but mostly the red armor. And of course, the stuff that I didn’t put the most effort into, like the rusty stuff, suffered. Still, s really enlightening experience and highly enjoyable :)

What do you use to strip paint off of finecast models? Got some old eldari that need to be stripped

I use the same stuff as a normal plastic model. LA's totally awesome or a comparable concentrated degreaser will take the paint off and not harm resin. The only thing you really have to worry about when using that with a sonic cleaner is how hot it gets. Finecast and other resin minis can get a bit bendy if it gets too hot. If you're letting it soak without a sonic cleaner though, you should be good to go.

@@eBayMiniatureRescues I'm thinking of getting one to rescue all my old paint jobs because i didn't feel very satisfied with isopropyl alcohol the last batch I soaked. How long does it take and what kinda results do you achieve?

@@dittmar104 try switching to a concentrated degreaser instead. That tends to give you better results in just a couple of days. If you end up using a sonic cleaner with the same concentrate then you can expect results like I get in about 20 minutes. Having the sonic cleaner makes the whole process much quicker and you can get a lot more done at the same time depending on the size of tank you get.

@@dittmar104 you can definitely strip resin minis, just be careful about the heat, resin gets bendy as well. For the most part you can use any type of concentrated cleaner, they are generally made up of water and a non flammable ph based chemical, just avoid ones that have any kind of flammable warning, and specifically don’t put any kind of isopropyl alcohol or similar liquid into it, you can and probably will start a fire. In a nutshell, stick with concentrated degreasers and you should be good to go!

I disagree with the lack of or confusing story behind the model. It makes perfect sense for an undead character to have certain pieces of its armor decayed and rusted while other parts are pristine and shiny. Just like the flesh of the character itself.. some pieces are fresh and powerful, other are decaying and crumbling.

Here in France there is a slightly different approach, there are competitions and exhibitions. At the competitions it is very difficult to get helpful advice. Especially from the "NAMES" who all stick together, as when they are not participating, they are judging. Sometimes they participate and judge but their friends judge their pieces and they judge their friends. With the expected results. Unknown painters have a hard time breaking through, even if they are excellent. However, exhibitions are a totally different thing. As the is no competition everybody is friendly and freely welcome newcomers and complete beginers up to well known artists giving them all the help and advice they need. Or if there is a competition it is often a visiting public only vote which is fun as it often has nothing to do with the quality of painting. If the piece pleases the public even total beginers stand a chance and I have seen noobs take home prizes on many occaisions. .
