Legend. Unfortunately keyless entry can't always be turned off. Either the setting to turn it off doesn't exist, or there is no simple fuse to remove to turn it off. And I have a 2023 car. So essentially manufactures built their cars to be stolen

Wrong approach. If they make cars more difficult to steal, thieves will find different things to steal. Thieves need to be caught and for that you need to have cameras in every street in every town and city. Can you imagine someone will key your car, you go to the police station and within minutes they have the guy's info and call him to come to police station to talk to him. He will pay you repair cost and you are fine to go. That is the reality in here. You can leave windows of your car open in the middle of the city and you will come back and nothing missing from your car. Really, stories like this one you just published seem like from a bad movie in here. I know there are other problems with system here, but with a good camera system you can get rid of thieves for good.❤

Mark, I bought a focus rs mk3 from copart which had no keys. Ford said that it's not straight forwad and the cost could be £2000. They have to change everything. I went on the Internet and purchased for £299 a box that plugs in the obd port. This box takes 20 seconds to programme a key. I can also remove the previous owners key data as well. Bloody crazy. I ve been in the car industry for 35 years now, and at the end of the day you'll cannot beat a hidden kill switch. Cost absolutely nothing to install. I also think the police are to blame. These expensive cars are going abroad in containers. It's not rocket science for the police. They just need to get out of their cars some times and do some footwork.

What needs to change is a shift of the liability to the manufacturer. A bit like how banks are responsible for keeping your money safe. If all manufacturers were added to league table of most stolen cars, they should be made to contribute towards the insurance claim based on their performance in the table. This would make the manufacturers responsible and they’d suddenly need to offer a competitive level of security. Nice vid 👏🏼

@EvolutionEndless

As I always said to anyone, the cheapest and safest way to secure your car is to add a switch on/off linked onto a wire for your car to start for example fuel pump earth/power wire, ecu earth or power, starter motor solenoid wire, gear selector switch, crank/camshaft sensor the choice is endless. All you have to do is to slice a wire and add a switch placed somewhere you only know about it, take your time and hide it properly and hard to reach out, you can even get a remote powered switch to on/off the signal carried by that wire and you're done, you can't take the car if it doesn't start. Yes they can damage stuff around the car trying to find it, but it will cost less than having the car completely gone and insurance pay discrepancy prices.

I was speaking with a knowledgeable insurance broker earlier today who only deals with HNW clients. I asked about the current situation and his reply was quite interesting. Whilst he confirmed that thefts of latest generation JLR vehicles had dropped significantly, the problem was far from resolved. Apparently the number of attempted thefts is still very high and due to cost of parts and the damage that can result from the attempted theft, many of the resulting claims can still be in excess of £20,000. So the insurance values for JLR are unlikely to drop any time soon. He also told me that the number of thefts of Porsches is rising significantly. The only reason that the premiums haven’t risen as significantly is due to the size of the vehicle park, so the number of thefts relative to the number of Porsches on the road, still hasn’t reached JLR levels.

I remember when my parents were in Nigeria almost 40 years back they had a lock on the side of the gear shifter which needs to be locked when ever you park the car . This lock literally cuts off the fuel supply from the tank to the engine. So even if someone takes the car, it will not travel more than a mile and it stops due to no fuel. The lock was placed in such a way in between the driver seat and the center console which is unnoticeable and not easily accessible. Every company should come up with something like that..

Really good content. It’s a nice idea about the OBD port and changing the pins about. It will certainly be a major obstacle. However, saying that the combination is a really big number is misleading. It assumes the thieves don’t know what the colour codes are of the original wiring harness. It’s not like all the wires are same colour. If you know the colour codes, you know the combination.

cut the loom right back and replace with all black
@hairlessvulture9501
@hairlessvulture9501 2 ай бұрын
A simpler and more clever way to go about this is to cut the wires to the obd port put quick connectors on it tuck the wires from ECU back into the wire loom and the port is 100% inactive, whenever you need the port you reconnect it via the quick connectors.
@seanswilson
@seanswilson 2 ай бұрын
Can't be certain, but maybe the one that Mark showed is for demonstration purposes only, with the deliberate use of multiple colours. Since each one will be unique, and put together one pin at a time, you just use a single colour of wire. e.g. pin-1 to pin-5 -> insert black wire between those pins / pin-2 to pin-10 -> insert black wire etc. Only the makers will know the correct sequence. The question is where can we find more information about it?

Exactly - came to write the same thing. Of the 16 wires on an OBD port, depending on manufacturer, possibly less than half of them are actually needed. The car thief will know which OBD protocol a specific manufacturer's vehicle will be using and so know which pins are the important ones (+12v, GND, CANHI, CANLO plus anything from the J1850/K-Line if needed). Most manufacturers - JLR at least - colour code all the wires on the back of the connector so it's only a matter of minutes for someone to just rip off your new connector and clip onto the bare wire ends the important ones they need. It will add some time onto the process, for sure, but provided the thief knows which wire is which from the manufacturer's diagrams (easily found online), it's not really going to do a fat lot.

@gidrally
@gidrally 2 ай бұрын
@@system11yt 100%. I think, oddly, it was to reduce car theft for spare parts as replaced headlamp units, for example, would need to be coded to the car. But of course, we all know how that hasn't worked. So really, yeah, what's the point? Keep it simple. The cost of cars has just gone haywire because of all this shit. Take me back to the 80's :) someone, please!

As an insider, the problem with the automotive industry is they can't get and often don't want experienced engineers, they're hiring graduates, people who got everything from books, they often come from privileged backgrounds and they're just not suited to thinking like a criminal. The reasons are complex, firstly HR and staff agencies believe that anyone without a masters degree is a pleb, despite there being experienced engineers out there who followed the BTEC route because it used to be well respected back in the late 90's and early 2000's. Secondly fearful managers, don't want to hire people who are old enough to have a moral compass or know their rights. You essentially have young engineers who think very much within the confines of the box, they're arrogant and they think the criminals are too stupid, they live in a fake reality where they simply deny the problem.

Sadly whilst changing the OBD port is a good idea, you don't need all 18 wires to be connected. A better idea is to remove your OBD port and hide it in the car somewhere, but fit another OBD port in its place. Some people deliberately mix the +/- wires to blow up unsuspecting computers plugged into that port, but you then run the risk of them torching your car! A better idea is to goto a scrappy, take an ECU with the plugs and decent amount of wires attached, and have it separately powered up and obviously not connected to the car, the replacement OBD port is linked to that ECU and it can be interrogated and probed by the thieves kit as if its the real one, they won't know why its not working correctly, just that they can communicate with it but its not actually doing what they want it to do. That way they end up suspecting its their kit not working, and as its taking too long to do what they need, they walk away and either target someone elses car or decide to abandon the rest of the night because they think their kit is duff. Surprisingly, its not many wires from the ECU that need to be active for the OBD port to be able to work, but it will "work" enough that the thief simply runs out of time and walks away.

I worked for BMW back in the early 2000's. When a customer lost a key, it had to be ordered by BMW with the VIN. When it arrived, it could only be programmed to the car with an actual working key in the car at the same time. Then there was a set procedure of sequence of buttons to press only the dealers knew about. Those were the days :)
