Glad my bump stop comment helped! The sand in your engine is a result of it getting sucked through the cooling system. Running skis up onto the beach or in less that a couple feet of water can suck sand and debris into the raw water cooled engine! These old skis are cooled by a channel behind the pump getting pressurized and it pushes the water through the engine cooling loop and out the back!

The reason you have sand in the head is from starting it in less than 4 feet of water. If you do the pump sucks water up and it goes in with the water through the head and the sand gets stuck there. It will eventually clog it and toast the motor.

Good call! If you want to avoid this in the future you can buy a "closed loop" sea doo which uses a standard radiator cooling system versus sucking up lake water to cool the engine. This will avoid this situation. Cheers & best of luck!
@jbncnow
@jbncnow 3 жыл бұрын
Why dont they use a strainer or something to stop that? how about a heat exchanger that uses closed cooling for the engne that circulates the lake water through like a external little radiator that under the boat in the water intake area, like having your car radiator underwater and since the pump is pulling in fresh water alll the time it would cool the engine ok. Mabey they already have something like this? im not familier with personal watercraft engines but ive had a ton of regular boats. Our 36 ft Sea Ray had twin 3208 Caterpillar diesels and it had closed water cooling where the seawater/raw water was seperated from what flowed into the engine by a large heat exchanger for each engine with 2 seperate intakes and i think it dumped it out the water cooled exhaust back behind the manifolds, i think the exhaust manifolds were cooled too by the water with antifreeze . Its a lot of maintenance cause all kinds of shit gets sucked up in there like fishing line and barnicles sea shells even plastic ice bags

Great job. Learn and repair. That's what it's all about, plus saving yourself a ton of money and the ski' s from the parts heap. The other motor should be salvaged and rebuilt. A fresh valve job, hone the cylynders ,new rings bearings and gaskets And you have a spare motor. That motor is easily rebuildable they aren't getting any easier to find! Check for hull seam cracks for water getting in the well. Small bilge pumps are cheap, a nice upgrade and may save your life. Thanks for the video series on the rebuild.

Water in the hull is likely the carrier bearing being worn out on the driveshaft. Could also possibly be a cracked exhaust pipe (water runs through to keep it at a certain temp) but less likely (although very common on Seadoo’s with the 787 motor). They make a kit with the bearing and new boot. Don’t get the ‘carbon seal’ kit, those are for 96 and up driveshafts. Make sure to grease it regularly and you should also be greasing the PTO splines every 10 hours in both those skis. It’s the zerk fitting where the driveshaft slides into the motor. Just add enough to where you see the bulging of the PTO boot then stop. I put a pump or 2 of grease in mine every ride but Im very cautious about how I take care of my skis. I’d also think about replacing the carrier bearing in the XP as well for future proofing. Last thing, since you swapped motors it is paramount that you align that new one or the misaligned driveshaft will eat away at the carrier bearing and destroy crankshaft bearings in that XP pretty quickly. Even though they’re the same motor every one is slightly different in how it sat in the last hull and every hull is ever so slightly different in manufacturing when the fiberglass cures and it will never be perfect when swapping engines. The alignment tool is a little expensive but worth every penny (shims to align are also required). Doesn’t hurt to check the GTX alignment as well. Keep up the great work!

Sand in the cooling passages is from running the ski in shallow water. Don't run the engine in less than waist deep water. It also saves your impeller and wear ring. Also need to flush the engine with fresh water after every time you run it in salt water. Only run the flush hose after the engine is running. Engine on, water on. Water off then engine off. You can jump the starter directly to a battery to do a compression test before you install it. Great job on the skis and your videos. Determination is the key to sucess. Use a phone GPS app to get an accurate top speed. I put my phone in a zip lock bag and put in a storage compartment.

Like the videos. Reminds me of myself in high school and throughout the years fixing up old stuff to modernize it and learning along the way. One little trick you may want to try out to get the plastic bumpers that are old and have a white glaze to them or the honeycomb vents in the hood is take a heat gun and carefully warm them up. They'll look like brand new again. Don't go too hot or you'll melt them!

Good job Zach. I own a Waverunner which ran but lost thrust a while back when out riding. After sitting for months now I get no response even when connected to a battery. I suspect a SAFETY wrist switch has corrosion, causing no electrical flow. Sadly these skis have the starter near the bottom of the motor where water can easily cause issues. Cracked sump hoses were not sucking out water while cruising. I plan to get back to repairing the ski as the Texas afternoons cool towards fall. Watching your rebuild videos gives me some ideas of what to check first. BIG THANKS JwgK in Houston

The GTX running rough after a bump is likely a spark plug lead coming loos from one of the coils in the electrical box. I had the same thing happen to me 15 miles up the lake from the landing. We limped it back to a small beach and I was able to wedge the lead in well enough to continue riding the rest of the day. As for water inside, check your hoses and check the shell of your exhaust manifold for cracks or holes. The outer shell of the exhaust is water cooled and if it develops a crack, it will leak water. To find the leak, get a flush fitting for a garden hose. Start the engine, then turn on the water. If it is a cooling system leak, you should be able to see it.

I'm 69 years old and love what you do. I had a sea doo just like your green one. For the water coming in put the ski in water and check the carbon seal on the shafts. (They wear out). With that covered. Check for exhaust leaks. That will kill the engine like you mention. It doesn't take much. Try running the ski without the seat.If it runs better without the seat you know more. Good luck Greg

I agree with a possible exhaust leak. The exhaust is water jacketed for cooling. If the exhaust seal is worn out then the motor could be ingesting water along with water spraying into the hull of the skii.

The water leaking is likely the bushing there at the motor on the driveshaft (with the grease fitting) water runs up shaft from pump. On the carb issue, there is a very small gas filter mech right inside the carb plate (diaphrams) that gets clogged. Lets a little gas in and then cuts off from starvation. Like hit a wake bump, upset junk in tank and clogged filter screen. Both of these have happened to me.......

Make sure you didn’t crack the pipe or blow a coupler on the exhaust. It can fill the compartment with exhaust and will choke the motor out since it can’t get air. It would also fill the ski full of water.

Water in the hull could be a leak from the exhaust maybe a crack in the pipe or a hose

Maybe the fuel pump, had a similar issue on a carb. Boat, when the pump got warm, it wouldn’t keep up, but it would always idle fine and work great for a few until it got warm.

Water is getting in somewhere, that’s how all the sand got in the original motor

Sands from the water that’s sucked into the motor for cooling more then likely ran too close to ground and sucked some stuff up there like sand haha I’m sure you know that now a year later since this video was made 😂

It might be the seal carrier on the shaft. My ski was leaking I had no idea where it was coming from, and the seal was dripping water enough to go to the middle of the battery.

There should be a 12v source that is only active when the engine is running for the GPS.

Zack, it seems to me that any time you can make content that doesn't cost a lot out of pocket, you're coming out better. Rebuild the motor. It won't cost you much, you'll get a bunch of content out of it, and of course, learn another skill!

bro, i use oven off when cleaning the inside of my jetski's.. just spray it on, let it sit for about 2-5 minutes then hit it with a hose.. wala.. clean and perfect.. no scrubbing. make sure to get the "Aluminum Safe" oven cleaner.. or else it will cause issues with your aluminum engine. meaning, it will eat it! so bad juju.. did you ever get that email? with that selfie of me in your front yard!! i know where you live!

Oh by the way, you ve seen the corosion on the aluminium surface done by the salt water, I am afraid that the plastic things you inserted will break if you do not paint that surface with some marine paint... maybe not in a day or 2 but certainly in time....

There’s a hose that goes into the motor same thing happened to mine the hose came off and every time I would start it it would suck up water inside

I’d put money on it being a exhaust hose coming off or something similar as that would let the water in when the engine is running and kill it because of the exhaust fumes

Does your VTS still work on your older jetskis? It stopped working on mine and I was wondering if you can do a video on fixing it.
