As someone who was in a "relationship" with a 33 year old man when I was 13, a lot of predators behave like David. They will manipulate and love bomb you into enterting the relationship, and the swoop in with the false concern about your comfort and if you're really sure, so that you feel like it was all your decision and if you try to bring up your discomfort or your boundaries being violated in the future, they'll use your agreement in the past against you. It's coercion. It's emotional abuse. And it's specifically designed to make you look good to outsiders.

I was also groomed by a man 11 years older than me starting when I was 13. What stood out to me was the part where David says "I kept reminding her about our age gap over and over again" and it's supposed to be him "making sure she's still okay with it." What it felt like was the age gap being normalized within the relationship. Instead of not addressing it, it got addressed so much that it felt "normal." My abuser did the same thing, and eventually it became a joke of all things. "Oh haha, you're not THAT old," or "It's a good thing I'm so mature for my age!" I hope you have been able to find peace. I ended up taking my abuser to court, and was able to come to terms with things that way, by making publicly heinous what was privately heinous. He didn't get the sentence he deserved (despite tens of thousands of messages I had as evidence), but therapy has helped me move on.

I agree with those who say that using that word for this waters down the true definition of pedophilia (which although it’s dictionary definition means an adult attracted to prepubescent children, I think that the cultural use is closer to “a person above 18 attracted to a person below 18”. I want to apologize and clarify that I believe this situation is extremely predatory as the power dynamics are completely shifted in favor of the man. Not only is he older by multiple decades, but also has the added power of being the one who essentially gave her the way to take care of her family and can take that away as well. I had a friend who was dating someone long distance from the Philippines, literally just an online relationship, and one time the family had a medical emergency that my friend paid for and the family were so happy they named the next baby born in the family after my friend. My friend said he isn't rich but it wasn't even that much money, and it just depressed him so much that the few hundred dollars he sent over changed an entire families life so much they honoured him by naming their next family baby after him. Poverty in a lot of countries can be so bad that marrying foreigners and isolating yourself by leaving your home country is the only way a lot of people can help their family survive and it unfortunately opens a lot of doors to abuse and exploitation.

Imagine a single dollar's worth multiplied by 60, that's how much the currency discrepancy is compared to the states. A lot of our workforce willingly outsource themselves in order to provide for their families. Even a low-paying job by an American's standard is drastically worth more here. A lot of women and even men look for a foreign spouse because of this. It's gotten to a point that it is normalized and very encouraged here, we even have a term called, 'afam' (ah-fam), which basically means: "American man you want to get with for $"

what really get me about age gap relationships that start on dating apps is that you choose the age range you're looking for. so Dave purposely set his age range that young. I just can't justify that in any stretch of the imagination, it's inherently predatory and there's an automatic power imbalance

Not really. You forget that older people aren't very tech savvy so they'll most likely not use filters on the apps. Also, I don't think people understand that the older you get, the harder it is to find someone within your age group because most people your age are either already married/partnered up, divorced/widowed and are not looking for anything serious (if at all )or not within your local area (although that last one might not be a problem for this guy...) but you know what I'm saying. Now I'm not saying go after someone half your age but it's to be expected to be open to date younger if you're relying on dating apps to meet other people.

It comes from a place of privilege to judge them for that. It's awful but they may not have had much of a choice. The idea of a daughter, who in their country would probably marry and be a homemaker, being supported financially while she works making much more money than they would back home, that's very attractive when you're living in poverty. And they know if things go well they'll never have to worry about their daughter not having everything she needs to survive ever again. It's heartbreaking but the wealth distribution in the world creates desperate ppl doing things they would never do if they had money.

She is a gold digger 😂 and he's a cradle robber, they are both voluntarily in this relationship and she can leave so I don't think it's any better that people in the comments here are calling him a monster and a predator. But yes, there's a problem with the fact that she's being demonized and the woman in these relationships ALWAYS is. But neither of them should be judged. This is a transaction, neither party is giving or receiving anything unfairly or against their will, and I don't know why people need to condemn either one of them.

I used to be a big fan of age gap relationships. I was in one when I was much much younger, and that ended as horribly as you all could imagine. I’m 30 now and in another age gap relationship however, I have the hindsight I never saw before. When I was a lot younger, and much more naive I was tricked into believing that I was mature, and special, not like other girls, and had “such a good head on your shoulders”. I used to relish these compliments and truly believed them because they were from people far older than me. That’s the issue. That’s how easy it was for me to fall into it and be easy prey. I can watch this tiktok couple now, and as much as they claim to be in love and that “it’s real” I can’t help but see the similarities in what I used to say and how I used to act. I feel sorry that this is happening all the time, and that young women, children are being abused this way. My age gap relationship now is not as big as the previous one, and I hope I’m wise to the things I wasn’t before. I believe the only age gap relationships that can work are the ones where the couple are both older, considered actual adults, and both independent. Otherwise I’m afraid it ends up a lot like my first relationship, and this tiktok couple where it’s so obviously abuse and control.

This is MORE then disturbing for me,As someone who’s got a twenty one year old sister the fact that this man is so just perfectly fine with casually going to a different country and meeting up with a young woman who is university age while he is old enough to be her great grandfather i just I can’t believe so many men and women do this,I myself can not imagine my pare or a older relative or friend going out and picking up younger people and getting in a relationship with them,If someone I knew did this I would be cutting off all contacts with them never seeing them again and going to report them to the police,The fact he also manipulates her into believing that this is her choice and her idea by reminding her of the age gap is also disgusting to me,I’m not against people who have big age gaps and are in a relationship as I myself and some Friends of mine have parents with large age gaps (mine are ten years apart,I have two little friends who have parents twelve year apart and a friend my age who’s mother and stepdad are thirteen years apart) However when this is what happens in said relationship is when it’s disturbing to me,I’m seeing manipulation and also I dare say maybe some grooming in it and it doesn’t seem okay,And although like Cooper said it’s not illegal since their both adults it’s still extremely creepy and gross,I don’t even know what to think anymore about this relationship or if I should even call it one,I’m saying this as a girl who’s only FIFTEEN htf am I more mature then a literal SEVENTY year old 😭

Personally, I really think this behavior is rather predatory no matter how you stretch it. How can people villainize her in this situation? he knew exactly what he was doing.

As a daughter of a Filipina, this is par for the course. My Mom didn't end up in this situation thank god, Dad's actually younger than her. But one of my aunts did. And years ago when my Dad worked in insurance, he met a lot of older white men who saw he married a Filipina too (a la photo on the desk) and tried to bond with him over it. It is so sad that every time there are these age gap shows or stories, I know there's a high chance it's involving a Filipina. If they're happy (like my aunt seems to be), then great for them; but I leer at every 60+ year old man cruising for women more than half their age.

One thing that stands out to me as a person with foriegner friends, is if you genuinely like a person in similar circumstances, you will be at least a bit curious about their culture and language. It will undoubtably be brought up at least once every six months if im generous. I have an especially close friend from Argentina, and we have exchanged many songs and we have learned a bit of each others languages. Yet this dude hasnt even brought up a holiday on which she likes to facetime her family, or a single song she introduced to him, or a movie she likes to watch, or a cultural thing he was shocked about... These things usually make your time together even more special. When my friend handwrote the lyrics to our favorite song (from my language) i cried. It was special. I want to memorize her favorite song in her language just to send it in a voice messege to her because its going to be special. I dont expect much from him. Can this dude at least pretend that he has listened to her talking about the smallest special thing in her culture?

For me him constantly reminding her about their age gap seems like creating the illusion that she's in control and that it's her choice
