I helped talk a friend into buying a ‘76 Les Paul Custom (left handed like him) that sat in the case for nearly 40 years under a bed. Still had the plastic covering the pickups and covers on the back. Couldn’t believe it when I open the case, never had a set-up done, almost a steal. Anyway, congrats, it and you sound great! p.s. It’s a tobacco sunburst as well!

I've got a mid-1980s Les Paul Custom right near the end of last Century. All I can say is that for the last 20+ years I get a big grin every time I pop open the case. BTW, my Wife purchased my LP Custom without my knowledge as a surprise. Best surprise ever! Congrats Robert, great looking Custom.

Great story on "Paula Marie". I had a shitty day at work, then an even shittier trip to Costco, so I got home and just wanted to chill and watch some guitar vids, and I saw this (must've missed it over the weekend) and this story just turned my whole mood around! I love the guitar, the sound, the back story , which is so common for guys in my age group (I'm 54), it just made me smile. Now if you'll excuse me I have to pull out my 81 LP custom and play for a while. And that intro jam was awesome, keep these vids coming, they are my favorites!

A Les Paul Custom is definitely a dream guitar for me, even though I always fight and don't really get along with the body style, neck and weight for the Death Metal stuff that I do. But I am definitely saving up for one someday.

This is such a great episode! You are really lucky to be able to get all of these details pertaining to the guitar you purchased. I own a 76 Custom as well which I purchased from someone about 6 or 7 years ago. The guy I bought it from was not the original owner and did not know the history. It is a fabulous guitar and has been played so much that the binding where your arm rests is worn down and is very rounded and smooth. The finish has been worn off in many places because someone played this thing so much over the years. It is now my main guitar and I play live with it and continue to give it the love it deserves. That said, I would love to know who all has owned this beautiful guitar through the years and what adventures it has had. Thanks for your post, it was really cool to see the history of your amazing 76 custom! Cheers.

This is freaking me out. So many of the stories mimic me growing up. The music influences and progression of styles as I got older, the non-strap lock drop, the talent show, the gravitation towards strats, building own guitars, letting the LP sit, not being played. He’s probably around same age too as I graduated in 1987. Wild video.

Hey, man, love your videos and it's nice to see someone who doesn't buy into the hype. There are always good and bad examples in any era in any decent brand. I have a '77 LP Deluxe that is one of the best players I've ever tried. Used to have a '68 Custom "fretless wonder". Great for jazz and fusion type stuff but not so wonderful for massive bending which I do (Dave Gilmour is my guitar god). I'm mainly a Strat guy. My mains are an '88 Strat Plus Deluxe with Lace Sensors and an oddball '97 custom shop nitro finish that I put in a Dave Gilmour EMG pick guard pre-built setup. Awesome. Sorry about writing you a book here but I know you like to hear about what other folks are doing. Glad I found your channel. Keep up the good work. You are a great player.

This was a fun one to watch for multiple reasons. First off, Robert - your music is the kind of stuff I’ve always been hungry to play in a working band (albeit with vocals) and daily feel as if I was gypped out of by the occurrence of being born at the *wrong* time! After that, I always appreciate and have reverence for the stories you’ve told about where your guitars originate. This is no exception. When you first posted about this Les Paul on Wednesday (April 29), it first reminded me of one owned by Robby Krieger during the Doors’ *Strange Days* sessions. If the Picard or white instead of black, it would then remind me of the vintage models played by Tommy Shaw with Styx during the late 70s. The interview Tommy did for Guitar Player magazine in 1981 is largely the reason why I myself have tried to keep away from vintage guitars. He talks about banging his up, something which I myself am guilty of. I prefer having reissue models like this one.

Hello Robert, this is a very great post for me to view. I have a ‘76 tobacco burst Les Paul Deluxe with gold finish and the minihumbuckers, which looks like the first cousin to your Custom. I got it used back around 1982 while I was still playing music for a living. I have long since retired from music and my work as an engineer but I still have all of my guitars. I go around once a year and check my guitars to make sure the necks are OK, etc., and this Les Paul is almost always still in tune. I will get some pictures together to send you. BTW, I really enjoy your intro picking!

Great story. Great video idea on the stories behind a guitar. Loved the episode on your Strat. I really related to this one as I am just 3 years older then Paul. And went down a very simalar path as he did musically. Back when I was 14. I really wanted a Les Paul. Well it went even farther back to 1977 when i got interested in playing guitar. But my second love was of course the Fender Strat. Back to age 14. I got the chance to buy, for $300. A very ratty 61 Fender Strat. I loved that guitar. But I always wanted that Gibson Les Paul to sit next to it. That was a dream of mine. And i have had quite a few guitars over the years. But to me. It has always been the two icons of rock guitar. Well, I still have that Strat. It was in my hands as I watched this video. I cant see ever selling it. Not to mention. My daughter already laid clame to it. But I am really happy to say. 3 months ago. I was able to finally realize my 43 year old dream. I finally bought the Gibson Les Paul to put beside my Strat. I really enjoy your channel. Keep on making more guitar stories.
