I Got Lost On My Photography Hike!

In this week’s landscape photography adventure, I get lost, multiple times on my hike. I did manage to take some photos, but I didn’t really focus on photography on this hike because well, I kept getting lost. But seriously, I think I can blame the confusing trail design of Boone’s Cave Park for my misgivings. Hopefully, my next photography adventure will be more “successful” in talking about photography. Oh well, can’t win them all!

I know it is not fun when you are right in the middle of being lost but I loved how you brought in some humor to your predicament. Your photos were great as usual. I hope you were able to make it back to your car!😀

lol...Thank You Walter! I knew I wasn't totally lost....just somewhat lost! 🤪 When...or if...I go back to the park, I plan on going in the reverse direction to see if I can't find the big red oak tree. It's somewhere. 🤷🏼‍♀️ And yes, thankfully the trail I was on at the end did lead me back to my car. 😀🎉

I’ve been there and I definitely get it about the trail system - a lot of names & “intersections” with signs that could be a little more helpful. I’d like to go back for some bird photography along the creek. That seemed like it’d be good. Looks like you found the trail to your car, so glad it all worked out.

lol...glad I am not the only one! And yes! bird photography would be great along the creek! I saw and heard a few varieties of birds. Also, I was on the right trail that led to my car... thankfully! 😂

LOL! Acacia, you handled this well! A very strong suggestion. Assuming that you have a smartphone I suggest getting the Gaia app. I explore a LOT both on trails and back roads. I always download whatever trails and/or the surrounding area to my phone before I head out. If nothing else, I can see where I am and I can see which direction I am moving. I can also see contour lines. And of course other landmarks like the Yadkin River. And I always turn on Tracking so I can see where I have been if I need to backtrack. And you can also very easily drop waypoints to mark a spot. I am from Oregon so I don't know NC. But thick wooded areas can be easy places to get lost. And I did check. I entered Boones Cave Park in the Gaia search box and it took me right there. 🙂

lol...thank you. I actually have Gaia GPS and the All trails app on my phone and when I am up in the Blue Ridge Mountains or in national forests, especially in an area without any cell phone service and a paper map, I download the maps. I wasn't terribly worried in this situation because 1) it is a small park with about 7 miles of trails. 2) They lock the gates and sound a horn at 30 minutes and 15 minutes before they close. So figured they would start searching for me with my car in the parking lot if I didn't make it back, which I knew I could reverse direction and go back the way I came if need be. 3) I always have my Google maps location sharing with my husband when I am out hiking...not foolproof, but at bare minimum a starting point in the worse case. 5) I had cellphone service and knew I would ahead of time and at any point on this adventure I could have accessed Gaia or AllTrails, but I was determined to use their map and the trail blazers to find my way. I am also pretty certain the teal trail I was looking for washed out. I noticed as I was walking back a tiny piece of old yellow caution tape about a couple feet off from the boardwalk on a tree in the area where I was expecting the trail. I believe if I would have gone in the reverse direction (with the Yadkin River on my right with going to the caves first), I would have found the trail and thus the large red oak tree, but I wanted to see the caves last. Next time.

Ah man! Yeah foggy conditions would have made it more confusing for sure and given the experience a "darker" more dreadful feeling! Like at any moment a monster would pop out behind a tree! 😬
