In this video, I will tell you my experience with the Swatch Group Service Centre. My Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic watch movement was malfunctioning so I sent it to the official Swatch Group service centre in Toronto. I will tell you how much it cost to fix the problem and how long it did take.

Nice that they polished the watch as part of the service, but 5 months is a very long time. Anyways looks like they did a thorough service so hopefully it lasts many more years.

That time line is unacceptable and it was very very expensive! However the watch looks brand new.

I have enough watches to wear so it didn't bother me much. But I agree - too long and pricey.

Very expensive for a full service and a refresh of the case? That’s actually a fair price. It’s not a 20 minute job and you’re talking skilled people working, not sweatshop job in 5 minutes

Considering the number of hands this passed through and the equipment used for the service it is pretty reasonable. 1. inventory control 2. working on movement / replacing it, gasket replacement, 3. testing, timing and water tightness 4. polishing 5. inventory control for shipping. How much should people make an hour? How much does the space cost to run and maintain? Should a company be making a profit? Based on your service maybe 1-1.5 hours of billable work on your watch. Based on people complaining on cost, this is just a comment on the true costs of running a company. Coffee is expensive these days...

In my experience there's a minimum price to pay for servicing due to hourly rate of everyone involved; if you pay less than this, expect issues either with the work carried out initially, or a refusal / reluctance to honour the warranty if issues develop later. I have in the pas,t paid less, then paid twice. I warn people who collect cheap watches that the service costs may surprise them and that a large collection can become almost worthless if they all need attention. The price changed for this Hamilton was very similar to what I paid for Longines despite the difference in retail price as the work carried out was the essentially the same. The only brand that I've found to be a lot cheaper is Seiko, where for their entry level mechanical watches, they always swap the movement for a new one and do not do any case polishing / refinishing - so you are getting less overall.

And looks like the services prices are also went up recently for Hamilton. The same service now costs 50 Canadian dollars more.

Agree. Once in 5-6 years it's not too bad. But if I wouldn't break it the watch would be probably still running without the service.

By servicing that caliber which appears to be a variant of the powermatic 80, the Swatch group basically replaces the watch movement entirely. This is how these movements were designed from the beginning precisely to reduce service time and costs.

5 months to do a service that takes a few hours with a week for timing and quality control. This is ridiculous.

I think they suggest every 2 years. Have to look at the manual. Mine was running for 5 years or so without service. Until I broke it :)

5 months yikes! I needed my watch repaired first place took nearly 3 weeks to give me an estimate then said @ month to repair…ah pass. Found another place gave me an estimate in two days and repair just over a week. I don’t trust anyone keeping my watch for that long, if you cant look at it for months tell me when you can and I’ll drop it off then.

With my TAG Heuer, it took the official SC 3 months to replace the bezel and the battery.

How did you break it? I've had two Hamiltons in the past and they both malfunctioned, yet we bought a Hamilton 20 years ago for my father-in-law and it's still going great without any service 😂

My best guess is that I've changed the date between 10PM and 2AM. Then I noticed that the watch is stopping around midnight every night.

@OneManReviews thanks for the reply. I believe the same warning applies to Valjoux 7750 movements. My last breakdown I had, a part dislodged itself and jammed up the movement.

Long time but price is right. They just can’t charge you according to the price of the watch, they charge according to the time spent and consumables used. This is for you to consider when you buy a watch, are you ready to pay for maintenance down the line or not. If not, better buy some throwaway watch

works out to about a buck a week cost to wear it.... pretty good maintenance cost per day really.... watches are like cars, you need the oil changed occasionally

This is why you do not buy watches with unregulatable movements that are basically ETA 2824-2 after castration from a 4 hrtz beat rate to 3 hrtz and removal of the regulator lever on the balance spring so not even a well trained watch maker is able to do a proper service…..nor the Hamilton folks. They just swap/replace entire components and call it a day. I never buy from the Swatch Group or their “Savior” movement…the much vaunted “Power Matic 80!” Yeaaa, sooo…no.

I did not have any problem with the movement until I broke it and it was running very accurate.

His Hamilton is an older model with a 4hz movement, not the crappy 3hz powermatic 80. I agree: when a powermatic 80 craps out, just replace with a regular ETA 4hz as opposed to servicing
