That singing drummer is Levon Helm, one of the most insanely talented human beings in history. That of course is my opinion, but there was an incredible amount of talent on that stage right there, that’s undeniable.

"The Band" was a Canadian-American rock band formed in 1967. They started out as the "Hawks", the backing group for singer Ronnie Hawkins & later they were the back up band for Bob Dylan. Their most popular songs included "The Weight" & "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". But they had a lot of other great songs such as "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)", "The Shape I'm In", "Ophelia", "Up On Cripple Creek", "It Makes No Difference" etc.

Wow, Wow, Wow, great one guy's. This from the movie "The Last Waltz" released in 1976. The movie follows The Band leading up to their farewell concert in 1976 on Thanksgiving Day in San Francisco. Robbie Robertson playing the duel guitar here wrote the song. Levon Helm on the drums sadly passed away a few years ago as did bass player Rick Danko who was on your car left and sang here also maybe 8 years or so ago. One more member has also passed. I think only two are left, sad. Two more great videos from this movie are "The Night They Drove Dixie Down" with Levon singing again. The other is from the last so g of the show when Bob Dylan and The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr along with a lot of famous performers who played that night did Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" What a way to finish the show. In 2019 Robbie Robertson hooked up with Ringo for the 50th anniversary of the release of the song "The Weight" They were joined in remotely by musicians from around the world. When the pandemic hit hard in 2020 this video kinda became a world anthem, please check it out, it's incredible. Peace ☮️✌️💕

There are always those elements from the back story of any work of art. Stories come from a reservoir of experiences combined with the writers words. Throw in some imagination for good measure and that sh*t can get real (and real deep)! As to this song's message, you can't go deeper than relieving a fellow human of their burden, helping to lift it from their weary shoulders.

The guitarist was Robbie Robertson, the Band member who wrote most of the Bands music including the Weight. He was the guy who kept this group together and gave them the music that made the band The Band. Robbie was a Mohawk who's ancestors fought on the Canadain/British side when the US war of independance occurred. These Iroquios moved to Canada when the war ended. Much of his music was actually historic including the Weight, The Night They Drove Ol Dixie Down and Evangeline.

This collaboration between The Band and The Staples Singers was the final song performed in the iconic "The Last Waltz" - A 1978 Martin Scorsese documentary of the final live performance of The Band. The Band decided to do their final performance at The Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, which was the first venue they played together. In addition to all the classic "The Band songs, there were a number of superstar guest performers - Ronny Hawkins, Dr. John, Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, and Bob Dylan. The guys in The Band felt that there had not been a "right message" stated to end the documentary, so this fantastic arrangement was put together. The Staples (especially Mavis and "Pops") were an unparalleled gospel group, and the members of The Band have their musical roots closely tied to gospel and soul music. No finer way to end this amazing documentary!!!

The song was part of The Band's last concert, which was made into a movie by Martin Scorcese called The Last Waltz and is well worth watching.

Just an incredible song, especially with the Staples chiming in. They turned a great song into a phenomenal song!

That short backstage looking jam at the end showed Robbie Robertson on guitar. The Band's base player was on the fiddle and the guy blowing the harp plays keys with The Band. The old timer on the guitar is Pops Staples and his three daughters with the wonderful Mavis singing lead.

Deeply spiritual song ... Nazareth , Moses , Luke and the Devil ! Fun fact - if you’ve seen the movie ‘Shooter’ with Mark Wahlberg ,,,the drummer is the old gunsmith man they go and see in Tennessee ! Levon Helm was his name ... RIP ! Great song ! BJ you hit the deeper meaning brother ! Asia’s take is also valid ! Some songs are meant to hit on many levels , this is one for sure !

You should watch the entire documentary, called The Last Waltz. It was The Band's final time get together. Packed with appearances from everyone that they worked with in their 16 years together. It's well worth your time.

Levon Helm on the drums. Originally from Turkey Scratch, Arkansas (although they say from Marvell which is just a few miles north) I lived near there for the first 3 decades of my life. Levon is gone but his memory will live on forever in these songs.

First off, props for the Elly De La Cruz hat. What you have here is a singing drummer, Mr Robertson (RIP) and that wonderful disjointed into lick. Robbie is the master of soulful licks, fills and solos, Rick Danko and his totally cool manic body jerks and killer turn with his verse. The Staple Singers took the song from really good to masterpiece. The song weaves bible tales throughout its story but the main theme is what’s living in a small town all about. Colorful characters and some hard luck. Nazareth refers to the town in Pennsylvania where one of Robbie’s guitars was made. Seeing a label inside the guitar stating the guitar was made in Nazareth gave him the push to write the song

Martin Guitars are made in Nazareth, Pennslyvania - that just kind of struck Robbie Robertson - and he used it as the core of the song. He simply looked inside the guitar, and the name was there.

I used to go see Levon Helm and his band play Midnight Rambles at his home/studio called "The Barn" in Woodstock, NY before he passed away. Good times, you'd park your car in a field in his backyard, bring food, drink and smoke for all to share and have a good time.

Watch at the very, very end of this song ( turn the volume up ) you can see and hear Mavis Staples whisper, "beautiful" at the very end. This is the very best version of this fantastic song. The video was directed by master director Martin Scorsese.

Four Canadian guys, sounding as “southern” as their drummer (Arkansas) the great Levon Helm. Robbie Robertson wrote the lyrics for all their songs. Try “Up On Cripple Creek “ next. R.I.P. Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel.. The Staples really made this version my favourite.

I like this version. I have been a fan of the band for years. Some may ask are they country are they rock. I say they are simply beautiful lay back smooth music. Over the years many great performers had turns playing with them George Harrison Bob Dylan and nowthe Stalptons. All in all just great music to listen to.
