My thing is to just always mirror strength/intensity. If partner wants to go nuts we can go nuts. If they are trying for a chill time, it’s a chill time. I don’t care if I need to tap early and often, but I try not to get there in the first place. That way I don’t have to worry about any of this. In a comp, you are getting everything I have though, so it’s on you to honestly assess your own objective ability.

Right, first of all I'm married and neither me or my wife want the other rolling around giggling with someone of the opposite sex... call it insecurity, jealousy, or whatever you want... I'll call it respect and common sense. If I were single I would roll with girls but only ones I knew Really well and then I wouldn't have to worry about accidently offending them. From my experience women are too much trouble just to be rolling with random chicks from the gym.

I needed this. I just started this year and only have just over 75 classes and I am just a white belt. I also haven’t gone to any of the advanced classes where there’s a lot of open rolling and or sparring. I have trained with women on pad work and submission techniques, but being 220 (and that’s “after” losing 40 lbs since I started) - I try to make sure that I focus on technical aspects rather than just throwing my weight around. I can’t lie, it’s been a subliminal concern for me when weight advantages extend 60+ lbs. I mean 60+ lbs above me is alot as it’s a 27% difference size, but 60+ lbs below me is more like almost a 40% change. That’s huge….. (To be clear, there’s a brown belt lady who is in my dojo and weighs around maybe 130 soaked and she has whipped me every time she’s been my partner in every way. I love training with her because I can pick very specific one aspect of what we are doing, watch her and make it my focus for the day. I’ve done this with something as simple as leaning forward slightly when I twist my foot throwing a jab instead of pulling back slightly. She is one of my favorite positive influences there).

It seems like these women were put on the spot and weren't given time to consider their answers, so they phrased it badly. Instead of thinking, "Don't squish girls," think of it as, "Don't squish anyone smaller than you." If you're rolling with someone a hundred pounds lighter than you, don't use the same strength and weight as you would with someone your size or bigger--male or female. (Unless they ask because they want to experience that pressure from a self-defense standpoint.) Women don't always realize that the relative fragility is not because they're female, it's because they're SMALLER. This also seems like advice for beginners to the sport. Every skilled grappler I've ever rolled with knows to match their training partner's strength/intensity in a casual spar. It's only inexperienced people who panic about the opposite gender or try to overcompensate for their inexperience with strength. I've had guys a foot taller than me pick me up and slam me against the mats because they couldn't figure out how to break my guard during a drill, stuff like that. It's better for HIS training to learn how to do it (because that's not going to work on someone his size), and better for ME not to get whiplash so that I can go to work the next day.

My old instructor used the term "courtesy of the drill" meaning know when and how to give and take so you both benefit from the training . So while you don't need to just let your partner win, you should let them work their techniques with reasonable resistance . Likewise it's up to them to give you feedback on wether they want you to try and muscle out of certain things so they can test themselves. I personally see rolling as a drill, then you up up to different levels of actual sparring but maybe that varies from school to school.

This was helpful confirmation that I’ve naturally had the right mindset when pitted against a female partner without anyone having to directly give me any on advice on it, despite prior having very little to no experience in bjj in general. Actually now that I think of it a couple professors has told me before to not be afraid of using a little more strength cause it won’t hurt them. Also a female purple belt once told me to not be afraid to put more pressure on her. Id definitely rather take my time to gauge the right amount of intensity, and work my way up as needed, instead of accidentally hurting said female partner because the simple fact is they are more fragile, and weaker than us men. But they are definitely not nearly as weak, and fragile as one might think. Also person to person varies. I think being raised mostly by females is what gave me a natural instinct to not go all out on girls in the first place. However, everything is a learning experience. My goal is to have fun, and improve, not hurt anyone so we can all keep training more in the long run. I think Matching your opponents intensity is the best way to go male, or females.

Thank you and Great topic! Total double-edged sword for me. I find it hard to balance good training with women and not getting in trouble at the gym because if I do something that hurts a woman by accident, I'll instantly get a bad rep at the gym. On the other hand, women need REAL WORLD TRAINING. Not trying to be Gung Ho here, but sometimes women need to feel what it's like to REALLY go up against different men full force. That will allow them to know boundaries if a real situation happens outside. I was at a gym once where men and women were light sparring Muay Thai. Everyone switched partners after 2 min rounds. The rules were no kicking punching to head. Well, some guy, from what it seemed, punched her too hard in the chest and she started loudly cursing at him...he didn't do it on purpose...I was next to them and believe me, he was going light. Ever since then he got a bad rep and left the gym on his own. The owner reminded the woman it's not LA Fitness; no man trained with her again...she left after about a month...

When you roll with a girl, do NOT treat her like one of the boys. She will have an awful experience and not want to roll with you ever again. Roll light, and if she catches you because you weren't going hard, so be it. Your ego will survive, and she probably knows the truth anyways. I'll leave it at that.

Mmmm, I don't think that's what was being said, you just heard whatever you wanted to hear. If you are literally twice someone's size it's obvious you can smash them, and you can make it a miserable experience for no discernable reason, this goes for two men of very different statures as well. All they were saying is focus on technique rather than horsing everything with brute strength. If you are constantly smashing and ripping in rolls with other guys, usually higher belts are going to check the shit out of you, and you might get a talking to from the instructor as well.

I spent a long time in Judo. We use a three-finger/thumb grip that's strong as hell but we're used to it in Judo. First time I rolled with a BJJ'er, I grabbed his wrist just like I would grab a judoka's gi in competition. He screamed. I immediately let go and backed off, thinking I'd accidentally kneed him in the groin or something. He accused me of trying to break his wrist by squeezing it too hard. Yeah... okay, buddy. I had to turn my grips down a couple of notches. But after that, I never even considered ne waza with a female BBJ'er, figured they were even more fragile.

From an experienced female grappler, here's my advice: Please don't quit just because I beat you. I go easy on all new guys but exploit their mistakes. Sometimes the new guy doesn't want to lose to a girl so he goes hard on me, sometimes the new guy doesn't want to hurt me so he goes real slow and light. So I made it hard for her to do so, I’ll tap when they have it, I’m just trying hard to work my escapes and survive. She told me to slow it down, breathe and relax more which I agree with. White belt is belt of survival, so I will use physical with technique to try and stop people advancing on me. I’m very conscious of not spazzing or only using strength, but it can be hard at times. Some gyms I go too just want to kill me so I immediately go to strong defence. I’d like to roll more with her, she was a good teacher too at the open mat session.

it all depends on the lady you roll with, if you are white going against a brown or purple belt girl then you have to use what you really have, if it is white against white or blue then NO, use only enough to flow the rolling and use the roll to practice escapes and positions, if men are brown or purple going against whites or blue then just teach them of some techniques they can use against larger or bigger opponents. one important thing is to avoid areas we all know are sensible, instead of pushing the chest that would be ok for a man push the arms and so forth. only my opinion

However, I will say one thing I have noticed in rolling with women is that in general their forearms are more slenderl, and those RNCs and D'Arces can sink really deep under your chin :)

I wish everyone would just treat going live in bjj like going live in wrestling. Of course you want to use technique/speed more than strength if you’re bigger and don’t crank submissions but there has to be an certain level of intensity from both guys for good training. I will admit I came from a gym where girls were aggressive/mean and liked guys to roll hard with them since they competed often. So when I switched to another gym I was used to this and put a lot of pressure on the first girl I rolled with who was a blue belt and pretty aggressive/intense so I matched that during the roll. After the roll she looked defeated and kind of mad but it’s not like I had bad intentions. Sometimes you’re the hammer and sometimes you’re the nail 🥋

Ask if any of your partners would mind hard sparring every now and then. I understand wanting to learn to use all your attributes. Typically, the goal in rolling is to "practice" and "improve." To that end, you want to work on your technique and not risk injuring your partner by cranking a poorly applied submission. However, if you're serious or competitive, you may also want to practice "winning." Nothing wrong with that, you just need to find a partner who's okay with that intensity. Preferably someone at least your size. Casual practitioners who have to go to work the next day probably won't be interested, but a competitor might.

I find it funny how guys say they mirror strength. As a very strong guy, as I have been weight training since I was a teen and know for my strength. I will lower my strength against newer and weaker people. I always have my strength to break or defend against submissions. I will let them work but I will try different tactics. I see BJJ people as having several abilities: skill (how long you've been training/abilities), strength (brute force/power), weight (your shear mass), speed (how quick you are), endurance (how long you can last/cardio level), flexibility (your ability to bend), toughness (your ability to not tap). But I believe anyone who sticks to BJJ has a good toughness in general.

Guys you can get a lot out of training with women, newer people, and really weak men because this is your chance to focuse only on technique. You can use your B game and C game on them, the techniques that aren't your go to and that you aren't as good at. This is your chance to strengthen them so you can add them to your arsenal so you can chain techniques better. You can let them get you in a very bad spot whether it be bad positioning or in a submission because this is your time to practice your escapes. You both benefit from rolling this way. Don't use much athletic ability and calm down with the pressure. Don't squeeze really tight and don't drive all your pressure in like they are men bigger than you. That is pretty much the 2 things. Watch your athletic ability and pressure.

Consider their experience level as well as strength level. Try to rely on technique than smashing. Sometimes if you’re more experienced and you’re bigger, consider offering a couple coaching tips on how you think the weaker one can overcome your technique (you’re doing them a favor to survive especially on the street). Also guys need to have the willingness to not let their smashing strength and power become a dominant thing if she just got you with an arm bar or a choke because she’s more practices in a technique. Check your ego sometimes please if you want to keep the roll going well. I’m sure majority of the men in this sports would love helping the women they roll with to get better so they can actually fight someone off the street if needed. But ego can sometimes get in the way… and it sometimes go both ways too … women who’s got some practice need to make sure we don’t just blast all the techniques with the guy in their first roll just to feel like a badass. The guy probably is just trying to figure his way around. We are rolling to better each other … not overpowering one another.

@@philodox7599 you're not really responding to what I've typed but rather something you think I'm saying. I'm talking about a concept here. Please read this part carefully and don't insert anything that isn't written. "If you always murder someone they can't get better. You have to dial it down to let them learn before you start dialing it up." To respond to your last statement I have indeed seen this. I would argue that the increased anxiety and pressure of competition is a factor in gym stud getting crushed in competition. I would also propose that not all gyms are the same. Some gyms might have BJJ with a more MMA focus. Others might have both but be more focused on BJJ. There is also a difference between BJJ as a hobby, a self defense, and training for sport BJJ. We could go further into sleep on competition day (see anxiety comment), nutrition, strength training, and the fact that not everyone is in the same place in life. If you have a family to support you're going to choose that money making activity over BJJ. If I'm a white belt, 29, business professional, in adult division, I'm going up against 18 year old's who might live at home still and are gym rats. We could also talk overall grappling experience disparity within a belt rank. Like a kid who has wrestled for 8 years before they even started BJJ and you happen to be the same rank. All of the above are examples as to why the gym stud loses in competition and most of them have nothing to do with their training partners babying them. If you're training for competition you should know enough to understand if someone is babying you.

You have to think about it like gears in a car. If you are in 1st gear you are going too slow for them and taking it too easy. If you are in 6th gear, you are going way too hard. With white belt women keep it in 2nd gear and with blue+ keep it in 3rd or 4th gear. The problem is that most white belt men and many blue belt men only have 1 or maybe 3 gears at best. So women, you need to realize this too, and be understanding of that fact.
@MrCmon113
@MrCmon113 Жыл бұрын
I don't have gears. I use precisely the force that is required for the task. In no situation do we use a specific percentage of maximal power. We use the force that is required for the result. To try and learn to use x% of your maximal force is futile, because you can never do that consistently, and it's also a huge waste of mental effort that should go into actually learning BJJ.

A lot *don't* that really just part of the game. I've had heavy ass people smash and crush me. Not to intentionally hurt people. But if you can't find a way to roll with bigger stronger people then *just get better* is typically what I'm told. A real catch 22 when they say "don't be passive" and saying "don't use too much muscle" problem is in real life self defense situation you're getting every bit of that and potentially from someone trying to "touch your naughty bits" just saying

As a new white belt looking for his first strip and being 215, my biggest fear is hurting a girl accidentally by being a clumsy new guy. If a girl asked, I think I would do it but I’m not seeking them out yet. Also ladies, when it comes to a seat belt grip or head on chest, do you think anything about a guy taking these positions? I’m a gentleman and I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable. One of the girls in the video said “just don’t touch my naughty bits” but when I roll with guys, that’s just par for the course. Do I actively avoid certain moves? Any replies would be helpful to a new white belt!

Isn’t proper use of weight considered technique? Like using your chest to flatten them from side control? As a noob, I’ve managed my strength by just not entering a muscle battle with them, like when it’s my leg against her leg, or my arm against her arm. I don’t know, it’s a bit confusing to me.

If you're worried about your naughty bits, get out of the sport or join a women's only class. I'm working on technique, and don't need to constantly fear touching someone's naughty bits. Last thing I need is inadvertently offending a female because they are too sensitive to be touched in an up and close combat sport. I don't need that liability. I've been to some gyms where there is only one woman in a class. Good luck finding a role partner if you are afraid to be touched.

In my opinion, I think that women are better or most are better than men at BJJ. My reason, 90-100% of women that practice BJJ have to rely or use technique because they are most likely smaller than men and that is all they have. Therefore if their technique is very good or perfect they can overcome any guy much bigger than them. If you do have the opportunity to train with a women, please do because that will help you improve your technique and you will definitely pick up and learn some things, like how they are isolating and arm or head or holding you down while your trying to power and explode and they are using barely any of their strength because their technique is that good. But yeah, if you have the opportunity to train with a women especially one that stuck through and continued from white to blue or even made it to black belt please do, you are literally missing a great opportunity if you don't.

That's dumb...if women are better at it then there would be women competing against the best men...and they would get crushed. The reality is that BJJ gyms protect and cater and encourage women more...so some guys drop out and will quit a gym now with little fanfare. because they are just learning but if the women are better trained and beat the men then it's quite humiliating to lots of men. I don't roll with women. It's emasculating.

@@WoodApe100 Then you are I’ll informed my dude. That’s like advocating that this MARTIAL ART should only be taught by men. Jiu Jitsu is a martial art first and foremost and a sport waaaaaayyyy down the line. It’s for everyone, literally anyone can do it. If you take the time and teach someone what you do, you understand the move better and maybe they will use it against you, and then maybe they’ll get you. So now you have to dissect it, see what makes the move work and now, that move will rarely work on you. You’ll see the set ups coming and neutralize them. If rolling with a woman is emasculating for you, you are not that strong of a person or (since you brought it up) a man.

So I feel sorry for the women of America then again this is saying something about the culture. Are they wanting to get rid of their female peers so they don't want to come back. WOW kids these days.

“Don’t go too hard because it’s too much but don’t like go to easy!” Oh fantastic, a clear and concise answer 😂 women seem to give answers that amount to “be exactly how I expect you to be when I expect it” Aka….not grappling with somebody 100%. This tends to be why we don’t want to grapple with you all of the time. Strength, speed and power at the right times are part of grappling, knowing how to exercise them is part of being a good grappler. Would a guy training with a girl and being limited by these arbitrary standards learn as much as one that could just roll how he physically can? I don’t think so

if boys go 100% on you, you are going to be quitting this martial arts. There is no way you can beat even bottom 10% of decently trained male. Even teenagers from age 14~17. There is already huge discrepancy between heavy muscular men with godlike endurance of same age fighting against other men, whose strength alone makes him equivalent to 2 belts above him in experience. Women asking for same level of competitiveness are also asking for an extremely rude awakening
