Today I'll be taking you on a journey of how I grew bottle gourds in my food forest then turned one into an amazing glowing lamp!
If you’re struggling, consider therapy with our sponsor BetterHelp. Click
betterhelp.com/thekiwigrower for a 10% discount on your first month of therapy with a licensed professional specific to your needs.
In the video I'll be showing you some bottle gourd plants I grew in my garden and food forest, before harvesting some dry gourds, then crafting one into a beautiful lamp to display in my home.
This DIY project is a lot of fun to grow and very satisfying to make so I hope you give it a try! More details below to create your own gourd lamp or lantern.
Bottle gourds are one of the worlds first cultivated plants, and have been used for many different things over thousands of years, from water bottles, musical instruments, utensils, storage containers and many other things. It's no surprise there are endless creative ways to use them!
Items to Create Your Own Gourd Lamp:
Rotary Tool: amzn.to/3R7RgaS (I couldn’t find the brand I have on amazon but there are some options on this link)
Tung oil: amzn.to/3T3hZrE
Sandpaper: amzn.to/40WNKEB
Steel Wool: amzn.to/3GhICBw
Sticky Dots: amzn.to/49YkS2P

Pencil: amzn.to/40VQZw9
Eraser: amzn.to/413cBH0
Safety Glasses: amzn.to/47xsDeF
Dust Mask: amzn.to/47Tc1NZ
Some other items that could be handy: Please note I haven’t purchased these so ensure you do your research and check measurements and reviews to make sure they’ll be suitable for your use.
Hole Saw Kit: amzn.to/3GjClVJ
Oak Wood Slices: amzn.to/47VM2FY
Lamp Base: amzn.to/47VHgrK
Please ensure your safety when working with any tools and electricals. Also make sure your lamp doesn’t pose any fire hazards. Use under supervision.

Kia ora Kalem. Ka mau te wehi e hoa. Well done you! How awesome is that gourd lamp. Another nice gourd project is creating Taonga Puoro known as Hue. Taonga Puoro is Maori for musical instruments and Hue is the Maori word for gourd. The dried gourd can be cleaned as you did and then simply saw the top off at the best point to make an instrument sounded by blowing over the hole at the correct angle. Some Hue give an amazingly super deep bass sound and a collection of the right sized Hue can make up a little orchestra. Some tiny Hue are played by blowing over the hole using one nostril while holding the other nostril closed with a finger. The seeds that were removed or tiny pebbles can be put into the Hue to make a shaker. There's an excellent book by Brian Flintoff - 'Taongo Puoro' with more information. By the way, Asian Dogwoods or Cornus kousa have a delicious tropical tasting custard fleshed fruit.

Love it, a beautiful piece of art! How about the obvious one, a nice portable water bottle next? Would also be great to see a video sharing your knowledge on how you grow your seedlings one day, as they always look very healthy. I struggle here in NZ using all the main seed raising mixes. Eg how much water - how often, how to harden etc, and Ive tried all the different seed providers too! Eg kings Grow yours, Seths and the standard ones too.

Fair play to You for speaking about the hardest battle of them all which is mental health issues👏 Glad that you were able to find a right place to get support and therapy❤ And that lamp, wow! It a piece of art, love the eucaliptus design, it creates this magical atmosphere. I got a dried bottle gourd grown by my close one as a gift and for the last few years it was waiting to be used in some creative project. I was planning to make a bird feeder out of it but looking at your project Im thinking the bird feeder might actually turn out to be a lamp after all😂 All the best Kalem, hope to see another video from You soon❤

Hi Kalem, thanks for this fascinating video on creating a lamp out of a Bottle Gourd. It was a very creative design that you built that really came to life when it was lite up with the electric bulb. I was wondering how it was all going to come together but I think it came out really great. One thing that really amazes me is that the Bottle Gourd dries out so much on the skin and the seeds as well. Most Gourds would rot and decay and turn to mush and that dries so hard and keeps it's shape. It seems like there was a little smoke escaping from the holes in the darkness so you probably could just keep it on for a short period of time.
@TheKiwiGrower
@TheKiwiGrower 6 ай бұрын
Hi Ben, yeah it’s pretty cool that they basically turn to wood. That wasn’t smoke by the way, it was steam from an aromatherapy vaporiser. I just wanted to showcase the lamp with the vapor lighting up cause it looked cool :)
@benburns5995
@benburns5995 6 ай бұрын
@@TheKiwiGrower Ok, makes sense, glad it was steam from the vaporizer instead of smoke. I was a little confused by the mist as you mentioned the bulb runs cooler.

Loving the creative approach with your produce, not only cooking but art too now. The first thing I thought when I saw those gourds was slicing them in rings, so many possibilities for abstract art, sculpture, windchimes or even puzzles and toys. What about painting with natural pigments? I did it once with carrots and beet, it totally rotted, but I bet you could make it work and use exotic natural pigments.

That is so cool! Thanks for another great video Kalem! Regarding to the bottle gourds, I got inspired by your last video and growing some from seed at the moment! I'm about to plant them outside this weekend, and was wondering, from your experience, how much sun do they require? Did they get much in the food forest? Just trying to decide where to put them.
@TheKiwiGrower
