The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!
I post videos every week on NBA history, predictions, hypothetical scenarios and current NBA topics.

Wilt's 23 block game on Christmas Day was nationally televised on TV. There probably is a full video of the game somewhere. The details of this game were also reported in Sports Illustrated. The official NBA record for blocks in a game is 17. So that was another record that Wilt smashed and doesn't get credit for.

That's an exaggeration, especially in the last few years, now that more and more people are learning about Wilt thanks to channels like this one on KZfaq. Many prominent figures within the NBA always have been, and still are, well aware of Chamberlain's accomplishments. Kobe, for example, suggested that Wilt was, perhaps, the greatest player, above Jordan and himself. I've seen various talking heads on big sports channels who seem to think that Chamberlain is a top 5 player, and they often get really upset with anybody who tries to downplay Chamberlain's accomplishments. In that famous All-time fantasy draft done on, i think, ESPN, Chamberlain was drafted fourth overall, ahead of all other centres who ever played.

You have actually talked about Harvey in Previous Videos, so I was semi-aware of some of this information. (Entirely through your channel) Did NOT know Harvey took the 100 Photo, that's a cool bit of trivia. I'm glad you diligently post Wilt Chamberlain content to your channel! Outside of Wilt Chamberlain Arche (Which is sadly mostly inactive) and Foobas Sports, the other NBA KZfaqrs I follow don't give Wilt anywhere near the level of love and respect he deserves, I'm glad you continue to do so! When I saw this topic my immediate thought was "Oh, if Jonny is saying that, this video is gonna be Fire!" (It did NOT disappoint!) You lived up to your Joe Namath-like promise, well done! Now lets wait for all the casual and 14 year olds to come in claiming Wilt only faced 5 ft. 8 "Plumbers" during his era.

What people don’t realize is that the Celtics of the 60s were that eras KD warriors. Imagine if the KD warriors were together for an entire decade. Other all time greats would be denied championships. Wilt gets crap for only winning two chips, but he had to go up against an all time super team every year. Imagine if for the entirety of Lebron’s career there was the KD super team Warriors. He wouldn’t have four rings.

Some helpful context too: old rim style (absolutely 0 give so jump shots are near impossible and fg% drops by 12-20%) were used before 1981 so everything before then needs to be massively adjusted, league average for centers was low 40% so his games above 50% are astounding given the volume and the 40% ones were still above league average for big men, also stat keeping rules were much stricter back then so for example if modern rules were used there would’ve been ~50% more assists recorded, with modern stat rules Wilt had about 10 quadruple doubles in the 67 playoffs alone

To me these stats make him larger than life and almost unreal ; his scoring was unreal already , but rebounds and blocks don’t make sense today . Amazing video I always put him in the top 5 ; basketball is the only sport that completely disrespects the pioneer generations . In the NFL Jim Brown , prior to Tom Brady was called the Goat ( others had rice and Montana ) In baseball Babe Ruth is still called the goat by many for his unreal numbers But for Wilt they use the lies that he played against garbage men , if that’s the case the lakers should give up the Minneapolis rings and the rings with wilt , and Boston should take down most of their history . It’s so inconsistent.

So true. They punish the man for the time he was born in. Watch some Wilt clips and tell me he couldn't play in today's game with today's training, easier rules, and techniques. In addition, even IF NBA players back in the day were plumbers and garbage men (not my personal belief or opinion but just for arguments' sake), then that was the skill level it took to be the highest level of pro basketball player for the time. Wilt FAR exceeded the skill level it took to become a professional basketball player in the 50s and 60s and THAT seems to never get mentioned.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is arguably the best player in the NBA today. Wilt Chamberlain was bigger, taller, faster, stronger, higher leaper, had more stamina and possed more basketball skill than Giannis. I'm not sure what Wilt would do today but it would exceed anyone playing today. Same applies to prime LeBron James. Further, Wilt would also do what today's players do. The Quintuple-Double With 53 Points, 32 Rebounds, 14 Assists, 24 Blocks, And 11 Steals was against the Los Angeles Lakers on March 18, 1968. Laker players Gail Goodrich, Archie Clark, Freddie Crawford, Mel Counts, Darrall Imhoff, and Cliff Anderson are still alive. Jerry West didn't play that day but I'm certain he was there. So you can ask them to verify this. Finally, no one in any basketball league, NBA, ABA, NCAA Div I, II, III, NAIA, NCAA woman, European League, Russian League, Philipino league, Mexican League, Rucker League, LA Pro-Am, D.C. Urban Coalition, Rec league, Riverside church league, YMCA league or wheelchair league AVERAGES 50.4 ppg and 25.7 rebounds per game playing every minute of 80 games! NO ONE!

Hello Jonny, this video was amazing, to say the least. I appreciate all of your videos, and the ones that cover legends of the past are especially incredible. I think you should do a video like this one, but with Bill Russell, as there are stat sheets available that track Russell's blocks and steals over a 100-game stretch like Wilt's was. Here are a couple of examples of games where Russell really showed his defensive impact on the stat sheet. - On October 18th, 1961, against the Warriors and Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell unofficially recorded the first ever quadruple double in NBA history. He finished the game with 15 points, 25 rebounds, 5 assists, 13 blocks, and 15 steals on 6/15 from the field and 3/4 from the free-throw line. - Then there was a game on February 7th, 1966, where Russell logged 15 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 25 blocks on 6/12 shooting from the field and 3/5 from the free-throw line. This game came against the San Francisco Warriors, who had one of the greatest centers ever, Nate Thurmond, who was known to be an incredible defender and offensive player during his Era. Keep up the great work, Jonny, we all love and appreciate your work!!!

Russell 11 Kareem, Jordan 6 Magic, Mikan, Kobe, Duncan 5 Lebron, Shaq, Curry 4 Bird 3 Wilt 2 Should someone get into the top 10 because of some crazy regular season stats? To many people, the regular season is just a giant exhibition. It's like some people are making a big deal out of the stats of pre-season games. The "load management" of this generation really tells how important the regular season is. Yes, I use the team achievement to measure the all-time greats. It's not about stats. It's about the playoffs. And Wilt's team is not without talent. When you get to a game 7 with the Celtics 4 times (1962, 1965, 1968, 1969), using a "weak team" as the excuse to go 0-4 is lame. Look at the scores of those four games 7: 1962 Warriors @ Celtics 107-109 1965 76ers @ Celtics 109-110 ("Havlicek stole the ball") 1968 Celtics @ 76ers 100-96 (76ers, with HCA and games 5 & 7 at home, blew a 3-1 series lead) 1969 Celtics @ Lakers 108-106 (the balloon game, the Lakers blew 2-0 and 3-2 leads) As a diehard Lakers fan, I really have very low regard of Wilt. He's the major reason that the Lakers are "only" tied with the Celtics, 17-17. Top 10? No chance!

This shows how good Wilt played against the best team of the era. His stats were a monster even against the best defender (or 2ne ) in Russell. I believe in 50 years from now that generation won't put MJ as the GOAT due to the old lines that "back then only a few can dunk in a free throw line" or "player guards aren't 7 ft tall" kind of argument.

Another cool video, keep it up, like much of your content. I've told my son many times, some of these accolades accredited to more modern players are skewed because some stats were not tracked in the early years. I typically point to Wilt and Bill Russell, but others as well. The more interesting thing to me, Wilt was known as a stat chaser, but if they weren't keeping track of blocks then, these numbers are even more impressive. Some times I think some of these were goaltending, and there is the issue of the accuracy of one man keeping track of these stats however. Remember Duncan was robbed of a quadruple-double in the Finals due to bad stat keeping, and that was a whole crew of people.

@Homer-OJ-Simpson Жыл бұрын
Great work. Now, keep in mind you cannot directly compare blocks in his era to even mid 70's or 80's let alone today. In part, pacing in the early to mid 60's was about 125 possessions a game for his teams and he played 47.0 min per game meaning he played roughly 120 possessions a game. Most top players in the past 40 years average closer to 75 possessions a game, 80 in their youth. The game was also almost entirely in and near the basket. With no 3pt to spread the floor, mid range shots and near the basket was the whole game. Very impressive nonetheless and he would certainly be among the all time shot blockers if he played in a later era. He had huge size, long arms, athletic and could jump high. The only reason he might not be all time shot blocker is he does not appear to have the quick jump that is a tremendous help in shot blocking. Bill Russell, interesting enough, did have that quick hop which is why he might be the best defensive player of all time I went through the sheet and counted 262 blocks through Dec 1965. That's 10.5 blocks a game. Per 75 possession, that would probably be 6.6 blocks. Mark Eaton was a shot blocking specialist in the 80's with the Jazz and her average 5.6 blocks per 75 in his peak seasons and highest per game average was 5.6 blocks per game. In more limited minutes, about half of what Eaton played, we have Manute Bol. Eaton was a great defensive player overall and decent rebounder but Bol was true shot blocking specialist and little else. Though playing roughly 15-26 min a game, in his peak Bol was averaging 6.5 per 7.0 blocks per 75! That included 5 blocks per game in just 26 min per game as a rookie!

You make NO sense. Wilt was probably the highest jumper of any athlete past and present! There is testimony from NBA players of the past saying that he could touch the top of the backboard. Also, Manute Bol was a shot blocker only because of his height. He couldn't jump, he couldn't time you, he was slow and immobile, he was just a 7'6 player with long arms! Mark Eaton was the same way! Wilt and Bill EASILY averaged more than both of them. The difference in spacing, possessions and all of the other nonsense that you try to bring up shows your lack of knowledge! You don't know much about BBall. I played in basketball leagues in the Army and in Philadelphia and at only 6'3 I had TEAMS terrified of my ability to block shots! Unlike Bol and Eaton, I could jump and I could time the block so I know from first hand knowledge what I'm talking about. When a player sees his shot go into the stands because you sent it there, that player, no matter how good they are, keeps that in the back of their minds and it affects them for the ENTIRE game as well as their team mates and EVERY time they face you they try to come up with gimmicks to get you in foul trouble to get you out of the games. That worked on both Eaton and Bol because they didn't have the athleticism of a Wilt. It NEVER worked on Wilt because he was a SUPERIOR ATHLETE who could jump and time the shot. Also, the stat sheet just shows a certain amount of games not ALL of Wilt's games because the person keeping these stats couldn't just cover Wilt's stats. "Common Sense" Wilt most likely posted up even better numbers for his career than what we're seeing on this one stat sheet!

@@skolcole It's perfectly possible. The game has never been about stats. In the end all that matters is impact. Some players can impact the game without taking many shots. I'd go with 76ers Wilt over the Warriors one 24/7. When I look at Wilt's career as a whole and look at his playoff runs,I just can't have him in my top3.
@skolcole

@@davidschmidt1793 suit yourself, but nobody beats a super team by themselves, that’s been a proven fact for decades. Wilt was going up against the 60’s version of the KD Warriors for his entire prime while always only having 1 good teammate. Took until he was out of his prime on the Lakers before he got more than 1 guy to help.

@@skolcole Sorry,but that's bogus. He was certainly the underdog for several years. He had 3 Hofers next to him in the Warriors,although they were not on the same level as the Celtics. Look at 1962. Celtics were the best team,but the Warriors took them to 7 games. Game 7 was won by 2 points,Wilt had 22 points on 46% shooting while his team mate,Tom Meschery had 32 on 52% shooting. This is one example when he was the underdog. On the 76ers however,the squad was great and they won 55+ games every season. From 1968 an on,the Celtics were no longer the same team. In 1967 they had one of the greatest seasons ever and won the ring. In 1968 they had the best record in the league,Wilt was the Mvp and they blew a 3-1 lead against an ageing Celtics with Wilt playing very badly in those games and not attempting a shot in the second half of game 7. Then he went to the Lakers. They were the best team in the league in 1969 with the Wilt-West-Baylor trio and lost in game 7 by 2 points in the finals to,guess who? The old Celtics team with Russell as a player-coach,Jerry famously won the finals Mvp in a losing record. Wilt could have retired with 4-5 titles easily if you could have counted on him in clutch situations.

@@davidschmidt1793 dude you’re saying a 22-22 game with A+ level defense/rim protection is bad. Wilts average stats for Game 7’s across his career was 27.8 points, 27 rebounds, & 4.7 assists with god knows how many blocks. That’s by far the best stat line you’ll ever come across for game 7 averages. Nobody else comes close to that. Pretending like Wilt was a playoff bum is such an uneducated & lazy sportswriter take.

People really have to take the era into consideration. He played in an era that favoured tall and athletic players more than technical ones (wrt crazy stat lines) and he was one of the absolute tallest players and the most athletic. His dominance is as much a sign of the times as it is his own individual brilliance. Which is why I don’t think he can be the goat based off of the stat lines alone

The blocks statistic for Wilt Chamberlain is the most astonishing thing. Almost nine blocks per game across those 112. It does match up with the eyewitness testimony of magic Johnson who played the man when he was way past his prime. In a pickup basketball game against Wilt Chamberlain, magic Johnson said that Wilt shut down the entire court for a while... Wilt was blocking literally everything that magic threw up.

It was actually really surprising to see how hit or miss Chamberlain's games were in terms of scoring - like quite a few games scoring in the low teens as well as having many games with pretty bad efficiency. I used to think his insane scoring averages came from him effortlessly dunking on everyone, but apparently insane amounts of offensive rebounds and shots taken were a much bigger part of the equation.
@samantharay6098
@samantharay6098 Жыл бұрын
Offensive rebounds, when and how he got the ball, and his own holding back... Wilt was sensitive about appearing to be a skillless brute who merely dominated with size and power, so he deliberately played a more finesse based shooting game, and it brought down his efficiency from what was possible unless he felt motivated to go to the basket.

Jonny, it isn't actually up to speculation when you apply some date analysis principles to the topic of blocked shots, and how many Bill and Wilt would have averaged during the 60's. You only need to take the cross section of data that we DO have in Harvey Pollack's tracking of shot blocking in the pre shot block era. If you take what he accounted for verbatim (hard squint? sure) and then assume that those totals are literally the highest games of the season... we're talking extreme outliers here.... Wilt would have AVERAGED a triple double off of blocks, points, and rebounds. It's actually easy to calculate this by taking a glance at the top shot blocking games by top shot blocking centers since the statistic has been tracked, then calculating how many more blocks those centers accumulated during those games vs their season averages. This defines what an "outlier game" looks like, versus the average. I've actually done the math, and it is fucking insane. Edit: Oh shit! I paused the video early to type this and realized you mention Harvey!

This might be a weird take, but I think Wilt was too dominant for his own good. What I mean is it seems conceivable that someone could have 40 a game; Jordan averaged 37 in 1987, and Kobe and Harden have been above 35, so 40 seems within reach. But 50 a game? Doesn't seem humanly possible, it's such an outlier that excuses are made; weak competition, different era, or conspiracy theorists who don't think he actually scored 100 in a game (yes, some people believe that was fake). Even if he didn't score great, the rebounding numbers are otherworldly. The unofficial blocked shots are beyond belief. Plus, he once led the league in assists! He is the greatest rebounder ever, probably the greatest shot blocker ever, and arguably the greatest scorer ever, as Jordan averaged only .05 points per game ahead of him. Yet his name is never mentioned in the tired GOAT debate which is always framed as Jordan vs. LeBron and any other options are wrong. The NBA has a rich and storied history, and the past should be appreciated more.
