I started motorbiking adventure about similar time and age. I was getting to my 30s, was never into bikes really but got mates who were and I just started getting used to motorbikes not knowing anything about them. What sparked my decision for getting a licence was a workmate showing me a picture of brand new, 2016 Z1000R he'd ordered. I remember the thought of getting a bike for myself that went through my mind. Didn't wait too long, in March 2016 did a direct access in a week, failed my first mod2 attempt, passed a couple of weeks later, had my first bike - yamaha FZ6 in April, discovered how beautiful Wales is and was astounded such beautiful landscapes are only 100 miles away from where I live. It was watching YT videos that gave me an idea of a trip to Alps. so 6 months after sitting on a bike for the first time I was riding to the Alps on my own and if that wasn't enough I was fully packed with a tent intending on wild camping XD I'd been on my feet for some 36 hours (left right after my night shift on Saturday morning) yet I almost didn't have any sleep I was so scared twitching on any sound outside. But the Alps...I simply got addicted. I only passed through in 2 days and went further on to Poland to visit my parents (it was 3000 miles in 3 weeks) but I was back again in 2017 for a week and then in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023 twice and I've just been a few weeks ago and planning to go again in September. I usually spend there about two weeks just riding, riding and more riding. The funny thing is, the guys who got me interested in bikes in the first place they own bikes but almost never ride them. In a year they make fewer miles than I do in one trip to the Alps and since 2018 I've been carrying bikes in my campervan so I usually do some 1000-1200 miles of pure Alpine passes. Too bad ferry tickets doubled in price since the pandemic and the fuel is up by 30%, it makes the whole thing noticeably more expensive but in the end of the day it's holiday. It's worth it.

I am only now watching this series but hand on heart it is beyond amazing. Such a journey. Such an experience Joe and you have inspired me to focus on what I want most in 2024 after a difficult start to the year. I have nothing more to say other than THANK YOU. Such an inspirational series. More than you will know. Stay true to yourself and always travel safe

I so really enjoyed watching this, the enthusiasm in your voice is infectious. I'm in my mid 50s now and long to do a European road trip and especially around the Alps, one day maybe, one day. Thanks for doing what you do. 💪👌👍

Just bloody well do it. I'd never ridden a motorbike until I was in my early '40s. I'm now 68 (still working) and I've done nearly 30 tours in Europe including many tours in the Alps. Planning on touring Corsica and Sardinia next year. Best advice is to find 3-4 mates of a similar standard to yourself to go with, get a decent bike (a GS/GSA is perfect), the best riding gear you can afford and pack light. And there are no prizes for being an iron butt. Max 200 miles/day in the mountains, max 500 miles/day on fast roads and motorways

Thank you Joe for this next part of your GS adventure tour. I am really enjoying this content and you seem more chilled and relaxed on the bike than when you are behind the wheel...maybe that's for many reasons. I have itchy feet to get my bike license a few people I know have just recently passed theirs. Keep it shiny side up.

There is a moment as I twist down into Monaco on my K1600 GT in 2018 just like this which was the moment that confirmed starting and fulfilling my Motorcycling journey had hit me. A song my dad and I listened to driving around the circuit (when I was there last as a kid thinking to myself one day I will come here on a motorbike!) suddenly came on in my helmet on my comms set. It was like he was with me again. Jo this video choked me up a few times. It’s amazing how these little things mean so much 🙌 Enjoy Aus mate JH

After our Honeymoon in the Ecrin Alps our handy Satnav sent us over Galibier to Le Chunel, a week before the TDF was cycling over! It was mental but totally cool. Bikes and Campers everywhere. We even, in my Octavia, followed the Skoda cycle team for a while. Awesome roads.

I haven't ridden a bike for over 20 years now, but I still miss that camaraderie that the majority of bikers have for each other just in passing. I'm not surprised that that small almost seemingly insignificant gesture from that pillion all those years ago triggered you like it did. In over 20 years of car driving I can't recall it ever happening from another car driver. I'm sure if I was in a "special" car of some kind it would happen from time to time, but when I was riding bikes it rarely mattered what type of bike people rode, you'd still frequently get that gesture of acknowledgement.

I totally get your enthusiasm for this trip! I love the Alps and go there as much as I can - its my happy place and somewhere I would more to if I had the money. The scenery, roads, climate, people, food - it all just fits together. I've done many Cols on my road bike including the Galibier (from your decent side) - unfortunately the weather was not as good as you had it! I'm heading to the Italian Alps in July for a week to do the Stelvio Pass and others and then over to the French Alps for another week of road biking. Looking forward to your review of Alpe D'Huez in part 3 as I've done that 3 times now and it is a mecca for road biking and Bourg d'Oisans is just a wonderful place to be! 🙂

Very busy roads unfortunately but epic views. Personally now I prefer the northern parts of spain/portugal where there are great roads and very little people (it’s an age thing i’m sure) . Being surrounded by so many people all trying to just get sht done gives me serious anxiety😂. Thoroughly enjoy my own space .
