Good player, good bloke. Nice to hear he's got it all sorted now. It can be hard just dealing with the fact your not a young lad when it hits you in your 40's, easy to start chasing your youth. Hard to imagine how bad it must be for elite level players who had everything in place while they were pros.

Big respect to Danny Murphy. I’m a Liverpool fan so I’ve obviously got a soft spot for him but I always liked how he made it at Liverpool after coming in from Crewe. First of all well done for cameing forwar and admitting your addiction. People say it will never happen to me addiction can get anyone at anytime. I was in addiction for years and now I've been clean and sober for 5 years cameing up. I will be truthful I loved my kids and grandkids though at the time I loved the drugs more. It's only when I found help and support that I realized what I was. We say it's a disease though I say dis/ease and not happy with your life and you find the drug of choice to take away the pain, though it works for a time it just makes matters worse. At first I had control over the drugs then the drugs had control over me. We should never judge anyone because we don't know what they have been through. All the best danny for the future. God bless.

When he retired at 26, Bjorn Borg said he believed the rest of his life would just go perfectly because it had up until that point on the tennis court. But then things went south and he was ill prepared to deal with it all. Extreme sporting highs are followed by lows whose low nature is amplified by those previous highs most humans never experience. Fame always extracts a heavy price.

He's not even saying that in these clips (not watched the full podcast), he's on about footballers specifically, it's obvious there are more people with these issues.. I think he's just making a point that money and fame doesn't always bring you happiness
@NffcRАй бұрын
Footballers have an amazing life and it's hard to have sympathy but you can see why so many struggle after retiring. You go from earning loads of money, the buzz of playing in front of thousands every weekend, the buzz of scoring a winning goal and the fans singing your name, not to mention the thing that most say they miss the most, the dressing room banter, seeing your mates every single day to being sat at home every day doing nothing...

As a fan for over 50 years of the reds I can still remember sitting in a pub in Arundel and Danny getting one of his free kick goals against United and the yoj I felt. That was a long time ago and before the issues he speaks so eloquently about in this interview. Whilst he would never be in my all time Liverppol 11 as a player, given this integrity and gutsiness to bare his soul, I would put him in my all time Liverpool 11 as a genuine human being. Bravo for being so brave and true to some key values to hold onto.

I done the tour of Old Trafford when I was working up there years ago. Bloke doing the tour said “It’s a special feeling seeing Ryan Gigg’s bombing down the wing in front of a full house” to which I replied “It’s an even better feeling seeing Danny Murphy bury a free kick here”. I nearly got lynched.

He was a good player. Very underrated. He played at the top level for years with Liverpool which I think a lot forgot. I’m sure he was voted player of the season at Liverpool 2003. However that was a horrendous season. Thank Houillers bad transfer judgment letting Anelka go and signings that Diouf. But anyway he didn’t have a bad career Danny Murphy. Sort of a James Milner, Henderson or Gary speed type of player. Nowt flash just got on with the job.
