Dear Hank I know you've read this before, but one of the things many of us so appreciate about you is your honesty - including openly talking about sometimes not feeling too well. I feel like this is so important, because in our society one can easily get the impression that one is supposed to be happy 24/7, and that it is somehow ones own fault, when that is not the case (which is of cause bogus). I do hope you will feel better soon (although it is totally fine, not to - for you too) and I sincerely thank you for your committedness and your openness. I love that you posted a video of yourself feeling cranky and overwhelmed and kinda dark. It's brave to be transparent and it's SO GOOD for society. I really like the four minute rule. It has given us many videos that cut the fluff and got to the point, but it is still long enough to have given us many videos that are informative and/or moving. It forces them to be more efficient in their presentation. (Also, once in a great while it gives us punishments, so that's fun.)

This may be weird but these are my favorite kind of videos. Like, Hank reacting to the negativeness of the world in an honest way and still going on makes me feel less alone. I feel like this a lot. The world is dumb and bleak and often I’m feeling like my personal life is fine, but there’s that black cloud that follows me reminding me “oh, hi friend. Remember when the president said this?” And then I’m back in a funk. Thanks for letting me know I’m not alone.

That last sentence - “So find things to sustain you that aren’t imaginary like friends.” - is either a statement of the importance of friends or a statement suggesting that friendship is imaginary. It’s either reaffirming or profoundly depressing. Good job Hank!

scjones25 I think the other interpretation is that he said, “...like things that are imaginary...”, and because he does exactly 4 mins he had to think of something imaginary and the first thing that came to mind was, “Imaginary Friends” of the kind that kids often have. Both interpretations are not depressing.

Are you okay Hank? You seem to be pretty stressed out. If everything is getting to be too much, I (and I'm sure the rest of Nerdfighteria) would be happy for you to take a break from making videos for a bit. Right!? Not at all alone. Its so stressful and exhausting. And then people keep going and living like things are normal BUT NOTHING IS NORMAL RIGHT NOW. So is everyone keeps going, and pretending, and that makes you feel even more helpless and stressed. And what is the point of finals when we are all going to die!? Should I be studying or should I be finding a desolate bit of land to make a self sustaining nuclear shelter?

I thought it was interesting that while he started out AS GRUMPY AS I'VE EVER SEEN HANK the more he "interacted" with the comments the lighter his mood seemed to become--if only a little bit. When you said "Find things that aren't imaginary, like friends" did you mean to imply that one should find things that aren't imaginary, and one of those things is friends, or that one should find things that aren't imaginary in the way that friends are imaginary? I can't decide between trying to meet new people and plummeting deeper into nihilism.

I think it's much healthier to just not watch the news. It's always full of upsetting things that you really can't do anything about until it's too late. You owe it to yourself to filter out all that noise and focus on things you can affect.

Hank, you are OK. Or more than OK. Sometimes we all get fits of grumpiness. You can still see the positives in your life and you still fulfil your commitments. Some of us descend into pits of inertia at these times and refuse to interact with the world. So keep on being your awesome self and I hope you feel better soon.

I've been struggling with grumpiness and discontent with the world currently, despite being very content with everything in my personal life. I just wanted to say how grateful I am to see someone else going through it as well. You'll have your grumpy moments and I'll have mine, but at the end of the day we will both try to continue to put positivity out into the world and I think that is very comforting in such a tumultuous time.
