Japanese woodworking tools are my passion, but I have a problem... I've been accumulating them faster than I can store them appropriately and my shop has turned into a death trap of sorts for my prized possessions. In this video, I'm making a simple plane and saw till to house all my saws and a number of my Japanese hand planes. This fairly simple build highlights a sliding dovetail shelf and a live edge French cleat. A fairly basic woodworking project that can make your shop storage attractive.

I love watching your videos. Many of your self criticisms I feel apply to me as well. I too try to over complicate my work to stretch my skill set. I am constantly wanting to buy more tools. Some I have bought and not YET found the right application to use them. I hope that one day my projects will look as beautiful and well crafted as yours. Thank you for the video. Please keep them coming. They inspire me to turn off the tv and make scrap wood.

Back in early 2000, I actually flew out to Japan to work as a carpenter in traditional Japanese framing. I already had a name for myself in Hawaii building custom residential homes. What I found was both upsetting and amazing. I met with 3 construction companies and all of them were happy to hire me, but it wasn't to do the traditional carpentry. They wanted me to help their company move towards the western style of construction. Sad.... I also spent some time up in Niigata, Sanjo city and Miki city to visit the blacksmiths. The cost for something like a block plane would be around $1k. But thats not the bad part. If you had the money to buy the tools, you're not allowed to. See, the blacksmiths are a long lineage of craftsmen going back hundreds of years. They were the craftsman that made swords for the samurai guards of wealthy families. As the samurai disappeared, the blacksmiths needed new products to make so they could survive. They made tools. To get a "real" Japanese kanna or any kind of tool from one of these blacksmiths, you need to be a descendant of a family of honorable carpenters. Then the blacksmith would stamp the carpenters families crest and their own (the blacksmith) crest on the irons. It's crazy, but when you look even further to the quality control that the carpenters do to build things (I wanted to build temples, which would be a complete impossible chance) its like going down a Long Rabbit hole. The amount of anal retentive is mind blowing. But it's what drew me there. I just wish I would have had the chance to be part of those craftsmen.

This is a really awesome story David. And yeah… the shift is sad. There’s a heavy push though from a number of folks over there to get the west into the craft, tradition, and practice to sort of… reverse psychology the masses in Japan into making this cool again. But man… you’ve got an awesome story to tell. Wish I had that experience under my belt.

I think this is a lesson on what happens if you try to keep trade secrets… with time, everything gets forgotten. Secret techniques get forgotten quicker, then there is an attempt to give these secrets away in to revive the craft. Glad the likes of Dylan Iwakuni and Tak are around to share some things to not be forgotten. More so, I’m glad some blacksmiths were able to transition to tool making. Luckily we don’t need to fight with swords and hopefully we’ll always need to build nice furniture.

Incredible story and quite upsetting, really. I don't like that "inner circle club" nonsense and it causes me to lose respect. It also highlights the fact that there are "levels to this", product wise. I have seen quite a few Kanna, slicks etc all selling for $5k each plus. Anyone can buy them. I wonder where they sit on the pecking order. And of course, they are from 2nd and 3rd generation blacksmiths, which drives up the price for this lineage pricing model. Huh. I'm sure the wood doesn't really care much about it

I can’t believe you come up with the voice over quickly before you start it. The ability to let words flow over video can easily be done, but to be done with focus, humor, humility, and genuine tone is difficult even if it needs some editing. I enjoy these little bits of stories of the past to explain your yearning for a misen place work setup then mixed in with a bit of humor even catching your wife’s dialogue makes this a Classic Cow Dog video. Well done!

This came out so dope. Procrastination, and over thinking once you actually start projects I think is an issue for all of us woodworkers. And yes finish makes it all so much better, I almost don’t like most of my projects until the end when the finish is added. I’m always like. “Damn that’s so nice, wow I made that - not what I thought it would come out. “

Two things in this video caught my attention . . . 1. Wetting the wood to facilitate chiseling. OLD DOG learns a new trick. Gonna give this a go. 2. Reminder to see if planing while seated is easier pulling than pushing. Have been wanting to try this for some time, but procrastination rules my wallet. The linked block plane isn't so astronomically priced as to make it an economically risky experiment.

Love this, Chris!! My kiwa kanna is able to sit on my Japanese planes till, and it may be because I left a flat portion on the “ledge” before the down slope; so it’s like it grabs onto to it and it prevents it from tipping over.

We already knew you have problems!🤣 The live edge matching grain french cleat is genius! Ben Uyeada has used plywood french cleats for bedroom headboards, side board for flexible shelves, etc. A live edge version could be very elegant (stealing this!). Slipping clamps.. the bane of all precision woodworking!!! The cameo moment by your wife was hilarious! Great build and nice organization of the saws and planes! The open frame combined with the french cleat is cool. Really like how you inverted the french cleat paradigm. 👍👍

I think if you were to take another beveled plank, and use a tenon to mount it it into the upright at approximately the skew angle, it'd hold the planes with that skew even though it'd slide down; you'd need one on either side to hold lefty & righty planes, or perhaps have some of them mounted sole out.

Ive been also interested on japanese tools, but with my limited space I have to be more conservative. Ive collected a couple saws, no planes yet but had a couple questions for you. Do you have a recommendation for a keyhole saw? Ive been wanting to get one but not sure what brand, length and the justification to get one at all😅Where would you use it basically. Also would you recommend the Kakuri Azebiki saw from Amazon? I have hand planes but would like to use a saw to create grooves and dados with it. Thank you!!!
@CowDogCraftWorks
@CowDogCraftWorks 9 ай бұрын
So I haven’t used that azebiki. I’ve switched away from disposables for the most part but… I in my experience most disposables are still pretty damn good and one azebiki is better than zero azebiki. As for a keyhole saw I know that Zetsaw makes a great one.
