I'm libertarian, and I can totally see the LEGAL right Mojang has to do this, since it's their game. (whether they have the MORAL right to do it is entirely different and the answer is decidedly no) However, if Mojang wants to hide behind complete private ownership, then they shouldn't get protection from the publicly funded government enforcing their EULA. In other words, if they want to fuck over consumers, consumers have every right to fuck THEM over with piracy, flagrantly violating their EULA, etc. Whether they have the legal right to do this or not, it still makes the reprehensible scum bags

@@robonator2945 Companies break the law constantly because there's no feasible way for individuals to take them to court and they know it. In many cases, the court fees and fines are also far less than their potential profits. Hence why there's so many instances of companies ignoring calls for recalls even when ppl due, because it's cheaper to settle out of court. In this case, these rules 'should' only apply to future versions of the game, not the older ones. As long as that remains true, technically they're in the clear in the States at least, but I'm extremely dubious about it cuz I don't trust Microsoft. So far it seems like it's not as bad as I was fearing tho. Laws are not set in stone and we can always demand they be changed. Laws are dictated by morals and money. It's extremely unlikely for the common folk to be prioritized in lawmaking nowadays due to the latter. Lobbying is a big business and it's very effective. Average folk just can't compete with major corporations with the current state of things. Taxes are a great example of just how warped the priorities of the government have gotten. There should never be an instance where individuals pay more taxes than multinational corporations, yet here we are. I'll end the ideological mini-rant here tho.

@@Heeroneko thanks for the politically motivated essay but it's not relevant to anything I said. Outside of proving you've never heard of a class action it does nothing for the conversation. It doesnt even refute the ideal stance I actually presented of "it should be legal, and it should also be legal for end users to violate the EULA and just play a cracked version of the game". If anything your long winded argument argued IN FAVOUR of a limited libertarian esque government since the government can't be trusted and will always be under the tug of corporate manipulation; so a weak and heavily regulated government limits the damage lobbying can do. Realistically the things thatcause the most harm are always done by government politicians and not corporate lobbying, (bad mustache man wasn't a CEO, he was a head of state) but we're operating under the presumption you're argument is valid here. Either you don't realize people don't need to go to court to get authorization to play a cracked copy of a game, or you didn't read what I said, assumed you knew what I said, and wrote an essay debunking what I didn't say.
@Heeroneko
@Heeroneko Жыл бұрын
@@robonator2945 You started your comment off with 'I'm libertarian'. You're the one seeing this through the lens of politics. My statements didn't refute yours, because I wasn't trying to refute anything. I stated facts about how the world works flavored with my disdain that it is so. If you're not capable of discussing topics with ppl who share different viewpoints than you without starting arguments w them, I don't know what to tell ya. That's a you problem. Most of the time there are clauses included that require you to agree not to file a class action lawsuit. Some states might protect against this by invalidating EULAs that include such clauses, but they're extremely common and have been used to strike down class action suits in the past successfully. Many EULAs are already considered unenforceable/illegal by default so that should also be kept in mind. A lot of that does not matter, because what legal recourse does the average person have? Most people do not have a personal lawyer and while there are free consultations, legal fees can easily bankrupt individuals. You also have to consider that many lawyers will not touch such cases with a 10 ft pole because they want to maintain a positive relationship with those companies and avoid getting blacklisted. There's also the time you have to take out of your personal life, the time you have to take off work for court dates, the travel fees depending on where the case is filed, etc. It is not easy or simple to take a multinational corporation to court. If you already own Minecraft, you can still download and play previous versions of the game, including using the old launcher that does not require an account log in. I didn't mention pirating, because I didn't think it was relevant when none of this affects ppl who are already using cracked copies of the game. Nintendo sent a guy to jail for cracking their shit and the guy's going to be paying them a large chunk of his paycheck til the day he dies. So, there's also that to consider, tho technically as long as you're only dling cracked content, not creating or disbursing it, you should be fine.

@@Heeroneko I stated a political position within relevant context in order to explain a position and effectively argue it in a succinct manner, you just went on a completely disjointed rant that doesn't even remotely apply because you wanted a soapbox. Personal conceptions regarding private freedoms and government control directly tie into the conversation, you went on some random unrelated rant about how hard it is to sue corporations, a fact which holds zero relevancy to the conversation since my entire point was they ARE within their legal right, ergo, cannot, or at least should not, be suable. Now you could have argued a reason why you disagree and they SHOULD be liable, but that's not what you did, you went on a tirade about how hard it is to sue corporations, taking their culpability as a given when it's the explicit point of contention. Either you genuinely have no fucking idea what the conversation is about and are just talking out your ass, or you're intentionally being dense because you know you don't have a rebuttal, and frankly between terminally stupid and terminally dishonest I'm not sure which is worse.

This will change the game forever... for the worse, and here's why: • A vulnerability has been found that allows non-existent messages to be attached to a complaint. This allows you to change the context of the player's messages, expose him as an intruder and block him from online play for no reason. There is no guarantee that this vulnerability is the first and last, so you can expect massive bans on KZfaqrs' accounts. • Many categories of complaint limit freedom of speech rather than protect players. For example: - Alcohol may be mentioned in role play or adult conversation, but the Drugs and Alcohol category does not make an exception for such cases. - On servers with PvP and anarchy, players often use the words "detonate" or "kill", which falls under the category of "Threat of harm". Mojang claims to be aware of this, but recent cases of player bans prove otherwise. They are collected in (this article). • The system of complaints blocks the player not only on version 1.19.1, but also on all versions up to 1.6. • Fear of the new system will lead to a huge drop in online servers, which can subsequently lead to the death of Minecraft. Only you Minecraft players can stop this. #saveminecraft

@@fajdek7032 Roblox not only allows predatory practices, but fully endorses it. (and does it itself) It's not 'only cosmetics' as once a developer receives 'robux' (the currency) they can not completely convert it into cash. Roblox has a 'DevEx' program, allowing certain developers to redeem the currency at a set rate. (50,000 'robux' for 175usd) The most 'robux' that can be bought at a time is 10,000 for 100usd (and the cost per currency gets higher for the lower 'packages') That's a profit of 325usd (assuming the 1 currency to 1 cent ratio; But the highest ratio is 1/1.175 for the 1700 currency for 20usd) 325/500usd, is assuming 100% of the currency goes to the developer, but it does not; as if I understand correctly there's a 30% tax. That means 425/500usd remains in roblox's hands. The tax means it would require about 65,000 currency (again assuming 100% goes to a developer and not roblox itself) to be- purchased for someone to redeem 175 dollars. There's a whole lot more shady practices which is used to restrict 'robux' actually getting to a developer. As an example; The minimum DevEx redemption is 50,000 'robux', which cuts off alot of developers from actually being able to redeem for cash. 'robux' is not a real currency, and does not behave like a true currency. 100% of all 'robux' purchases goes directly to roblox itself, only a very small amount is actually paid to it's developers. I don't understand why people ever use 'bad apple' arguments to defend something

Underneath their original comment is my original reply to it.) ""Whilst I do hate the Roblox Corporation a lot of what you said are pretty ehh. It is only cosmetics unless you're on pay to win games which in that case that's a you problem. The DevEx program is a good thing. It allowed many developers to make millions and overall increased the quality of most games while a lot more cashgrabs were made. While it does suck that developers only get 1/5 of the money you have to realize that Roblox is pretty difficult to run and does have very high server costs. They also have staff to pay. They even write where the money goes to on the developer forums. The 50,000 robux minimum is there for a reason. Developers have to submit tax information that must be kept up to date at all times. Must be 13+ and have a guardian if not 18+. And a lot more. If everyone and their dog can DevEx because their friend bought something from their game it would be a mess. If you made a high quality game with a decent sized community then earning 50,000 robux would not be an issue. Use the platform and understand it before you make a comment on how it works. Roblox has way more serious issues that aren't being talked about yet people are talking about nonissues like these"" @@efwfewewf4649 Just because roblox refuses to address pedophilia on the site, does not mean these issues should be ignored. allowing a company doing a multitude of issues to get away with one of their many issues because 'there's bigger issues' is dumb at best, and malicious at worst. I have used the site before, and played some of the most popular games; many of which are social games and do not have any form of pay-to-win, it actually took me awhile to find a game that was a competitive game that had genuine pay-to-win. They all have predatory practices. You're using the exact same argument as the person before 'It's just some money hungry bad apples!' It's not, it never is. I'm quite glad you brought up cosmetics, the children on that site become awful elitist cut-throat little capitalists; all because of some digital assets & a literal stock market. Kids are bullied when they do not buy the digital currency and get some of the cosmetics, and are praised for buying stock-based cosmetics (so called 'limited' hats). While the pedophilia on the site is awful, and heart gutting to hear about; the cosmetic & currency side of the site are much worse in terms of the amount of children affected. Oh, and the 'way more serious issues' are talked about alot more than the currency side of things. It's very easy to find many news articles describing the almost systemic levels of child grooming and pedophilia, while the silencing of critics, and it's predatory practices to get kids addicted to buying currency are much less common to be talked about. For a supposed critic of roblox, you sure do alot of defending it. And most of my original comment was factual statements about the profit roblox makes in comparison to the costs of DevEx

The main issue with this report system is it's definitely abusable. Imagine you're on a private, 18+ minecraft server and someone reports you for talking about alcohol. You're now banned from not only accessing all servers, but your own server that you pay for. What's stopping children from mass reporting people they get in a fight with, or reporting a server moderator who banned them for something they don't agree on? Despite what Mojang says these reports can't be human moderated without lots of work and money that wouldn't be worth it in the long run. And we already know how bad Mojang is with dealing with account issues, let alone false bans. Also, banning someone for TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS PRETTY ABSURD, DON'T YA THINK?

I've moderated for a decently sized network in the past, and man I absolutely hate this. Leave moderation to the servers please. We don't want, or need Mojang to step in and do moderation for us. If a server is privately owned, there's no way that Mojang should be able to punish someone for what they say on that server and ban them from playing on any privately owned server. What if someone says something on a server like 2b2t and they get reported for it? The community for 2b2t agrees as a whole that there are no rules, but now Mojang can just jump in and enforce their own rules anyway and ban someone from ALL servers? If it was something for like just realms I would be more fine with it, but these are privately owned servers, Mojang should have no control over the moderation of them. If a server is breaking the EULA, that's one thing and they should be able to blacklist it. But banning individual players? That's stepping way out of line. EDIT: Yes, I understand that it's Microsoft making these changes. I should be saying Microsoft, but said Mojang since they're the ones implementing it.

Microsoft shouldn't have that kind of power in the first place. We would all like to think the moderation will be fair and thorough but let's be real, there will be people that get unjustly banned whether from spam reports or just bad moderating. And those people won't be able to access those features that they rightfully paid for. I think it's best to keep the moderation power to the individual servers themselves.

Second, If those people say horrible things on servers that allow it then they shouldn't be able to be banned for it, plain and simple. People will always cuss other people out, busted report system or not. Or worse, they can use it against you to get you banned from the server by spam-reporting you or otherwise. I absolutely despise how Mojang (and almost certainly Micro$oft) have desperately tried to make Minecraft into a kids game and turn it into a classic corporate juggernaut. I mean sure, children are far more easily exploitable for profit by big corporations, but Minecraft has always had a more mature aspect to it. The whole point was it was a sandbox, you could do whatever the heck you wanted, you made your own fun. Servers could moderate as they pleased, players could do whatever, the only requirement for new features was how well they fit the game. Its very sad to watch this sort of decay. The stupid "KidS MiGHt HurT AniMaLs sO wE cAN't AdD ThiS" has already caused fun new mechanics to get scrapped. C418 no longer makes Minecraft music since he stands up for himself and refuses to hand all the music rights to Micro$oft. Not to mention some other unsavory actions recently done by Mojang which Antvenom brought up in a recent video. Oh, and apparently snooper settings were secretly added back in in 1.18 (without an option to disable them, of course). Such a shame watching a childhood game become a corporatized mess, but I'm at least thankful for the memories from the good days.
@brendanschuett
@brendanschuett Жыл бұрын
Well said, and I exactly agree with your points. At first, it looked like they bought the game so it could have a bigger dev team to get better features, but it's very clear now that it was all to take advantage of the popularity and make a profit. I already realized the true intentions when I looked at them adding minecoins and the marketplace. Then them switching our accounts over to Micro$oft for "better safety features" (forced us to agree to a set of rules that means they are able to get away with this banning system). Look at Roblox: it's a kids game, with robux (minecoins) and heavy moderation and even chat filtering (hashtags, but on Minecraft it seems to be straight to a ban if you use caps or swears). Roblox is geared towards kids, and Minecraft is heading in that direction. I believe this video is getting more and more relevant: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qM2UZ5eouNGanoU.html

Honestly, its hard to see minecraft living much longer, 10 years? Sure, but as long as they want it to, not at this rate. People above 18 host the majority of servers medium to small, and even if the large servers have teams and companies behind them (Hypixel and Mod Networks), hypixel is already making there own game, and most of Modded minecraft is only played by adults or late teens now. With the modpack scene slowly dying every day, and hypixel making there own game, leaving only behind subpar minecraft networks, and the other middle sized servers being ran by individuals who probably would only keep the servers up to profit, not to actually enjoy the game at that point. It would litteraly lead to an extinction of community hosted content, where a new Hypixel and others like it would have to be established by microsoft, and it would just be a bunch of kids fighting and yelling at one another. They would turn minecraft from a game into a kindergarten.

I _maybe_ understand the value of a cross-server ban (especially on the special mojang-approved servers), but the fact that it disables multiplayer _outright_ ? That means that you can't even play over lan or on a small private server with your friends. Not to mention, people can grow a lot over just one or two years (especially children, who make up a lot of the playerbase), so the lifetime ban seems really excessive.

The other thing to consider is that someone is going to find a way around this. With how open to modding Java Edition is, I really have a hard time believing that someone isn't going to find a way to circumvent being banned from Mojang. Edit: I understand the session ID thing, but here's my theory of how this could be circumvented: A server-side mod gets created that disregards the need for a valid session ID from Microsoft, and instead creates a sort of pseudo-session ID unique to that server. That way, you can maintain most of the critical utility of a session ID. If done correctly, it protects players from being banned falsely while also giving server owners more flexibility with how they run their moderation process. Not saying this doesn't have it's obvious flaws either, but it's more about the concept. They can't just delete the client code from your computer because that's integral to singleplayer as well, and as long as that stays true I guarantee you that there WILL be a way to play multiplayer, even when banned.

one of the things I loved about Minecraft up until now was decentralized moderation. Microsoft should not have a say about what can and cannot be said. Moderation should be handled by the people who moderate the servers.

Nobody, especially the content creators, should let this pass. If there has to be something similar to #SaveTf2 to prevent this, then let it happen. Protest with your dollar. Minecraft can't become the new roblox. We don't need a "stupid minecraft bans" compilation.

@@testgamer571 sadly yes. old games we all loved are now slowly falling because of bad decisions and/or greed. tf2 is a really good example of valve milking the fuck out of csgo (ew) and tf2. yet not giving a shit about tf2 cause its less popular and only continues to push out new hats and cases but not do shit about bots. game dev companies need to realize what the fuck theyre doing and get back on track on actually being good and not shit like ea

Phoenix, "As long as you're a good person" rules are genuinely a slippery slope. Cause everyone has a different standard of being a good person. Most people would draw the line at like, saying slurs at people. Or preying on kids. Sure. But someone else might draw the line at swearing. Or at women speaking when they're not spoken to. Or "being a good person" to someone might mean "you have to be religious" or "you can't be gay". This kind of stuff can fall apart really, really quickly. And if Mojang ever comes under new management or the moderators have different standards of what a good person is, you can see how this will hurt people. Its the constant battle of "well they can take away the bad people cause they're bad" but it always inches closer, and where is the line drawn? Not to mention if they set up an algorithm for this. We should genuinely fight this tooth and nail. This is Not something corporate needs to handle. This is something that needs to be handled on a server level

Exactly. One authority should NEVER define the exact meaning of right and wrong, it has never gone well before and it certainly doesn't seem like it will now. The only time this works is when it is fairly relaxed and a big majority agree on it, and even then other cultural backgrounds often disagree.

Hell, here's a fun definition of good: You support all the decisions of the Supreme Court of the USA. You believe that people should have bodily autonomy and that states shouldn't be able to prevent you from exercising that (Roe v Wade)? Banned. You believe that states should be able to decide what you can carry on your body (NYSRPA v Bruen)? Banned. You don't support gay marriage (Obergefell v Hodges)? Banned. Think the government shouldn't be able to seize and destroy your property for their own profit (Gonzalez v Raich)? Banned. Only an extremely small portion of the population would be good, and they're incredibly inconsistent.

This update is insane, and not in the good way. Correct me if I'm wrong about this, but let's count the major features this update adds: - there is 1 new biome which is basically just a reskin of the biome we already had but with different trees. - there are 2 new mobs (3 if you count the tadpole as separate from the frogs, and 4 if you also count chest boats as mobs). - there finally are most of the features we were promised 1 year ago, which (from what I know) were apparently close to being finished when 1.18 released (ancient cities, deep dark, the warden and skulk) and were only delayed so they could be improved. - and finally there is a complex ban system which can lock you out of multiplayer of any kind, and which (looking at how mojang moderated the multiplayer community in the past) is sure to be abused. It also literally attempts to fix something that wasn't even an issue to begin with, as (from what I know) no one really complained about not having enough moderation features. From what I can see here (and I beg you to prove me wrong on this), the ban system is the only major feature in this whole update adds which was not promised to us in earlier updates, and since it can completely ruin the game for people who only play on multiplayer, this effectively means that this update added a negative amount of features. Even if this system will be used for actual moderation, there is still a large chance of you getting false banned, and now that bans will be handled from a single place, its possible for a bug to lock people out of multiplayer without them doing anything. Luckily for us, there will definitely be a fully automated system for appealing, which will almost certainly just redirect you to a message saying that your appeal has been denied. At the very least 1.9 added new things to the game (like end cities and elytra), and some people actually enjoy the new combat system. This pretty much means that 1.19 is the worst minecraft update mojang has released to date.

Another important thing that wasn't mentioned by anyone so far, is that depending on how this ban system will be implemented, mojang could easily prevent you from doing multiplayer on ANY version of the game, as most minecraft servers require mojang authentication. Implementing this for all versions could literally be as easy as adding 3 lines of code. The mojang provided servers do have an option to disable authentication, but it allows anyone to join the server as any user, and also disables skins.
