🦷🧠 Dental school is never really easy. Throughout the past three years, I have been challenged by the rigors of my dental education. Today, I will be telling you the story of my recent run ins with failure. I will also discuss what I have learned while falling short in my goals. This video is real, but I hope it will help some students who are experiencing the same things I have been. Let's talk.

Stephen, these are such wise words and thoughts. Everyone, not just people in dental school, should watch this and take it to heart. One of my favorite quotes about failure: “success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts”

Hey Stephen, I’m currently a D1 & have followed you for quite some time now as your videos gave me amazing advice & insight during my predental journey. Now that I’m over 2 months in I love that I’m able to watch these videos and actually FULLY relate to your experiences. These past few weeks have…exactly as you said… been KICKING ME over & over even when I’m down. Like you, I also have little experience with failure from undergrad, but boy has that changed recently. I keep telling myself this time of adjustment & failure is a great opportunity for growth, and I’m still highly motivated to get back on track. But sometimes comparison to my other classmates (& my past self who never failed) is tough and these past few days specifically has been pretty rough emotionally. I popped on KZfaq 20 minutes ago to search for a video to aid in my understanding for my op 1 didactic lecture and saw THIS video front & center screaming my name to watch it. Thank you so much for being so open & sharing your experiences and take on how to manage failure. I don’t want to say I’m happy other people are failing… but it definitely does provide some sense of comfort 😂 We’re all in this together & I’m so happy to be apart of this special community of developing professionals. Praying for you & your path exam score!! Thanks again ♡

In my D2 year and currently taking pathology, tough material and memorization, no doubt about it. I can totally relate with what you said about dental school continuously kicking from my D1 year. There is no time to dwell on failure because the next challenge is already happening, and that’s one of the most stressfully feeling I’ve ever experienced. However the silver lining for me is knowing that when we graduate (and we will), we’re going to be beasts in the relation to productivity and discipline. It will be quite a reward knowing we completed something most could not, and what we have learned will stay with us forever. “Hard times build strong men”

I just got accepted by the University I want to study dentistry in a couple of days ago. And Honestly I’m genuinely scared and concerned, there’s excitement of course but I take things I care about personally and seriously. For someone reason Hearing Your Feelings and Honesty Towards the process is something so amazing and I’m assured that No matter how hard it is, it’s always incredible how you challenge yourself and Take responsibility for Your actions even though it’s not to your liking. Wishing the best for you and I hope you’re gonna keep making these. It’s really important to move forward and learn from mistakes. Wishing you well and I’m really admiring your hard work❤️💯

Making mistakes is part of the process, Jalil! Never fear making mistakes! Just understand that when you make them, the world has not ended. When you make a mistake, there is always an opportunity to learn. And when you make a mistake, you should feel a fire lit inside of you to work harder to avoid that mistake in the future. Keep up the great work, thank you for watching and supporting, and have fun in your first year of Dental School!

I really appreciate this honest and very helpful video. I am currently in a health care program (not dentistry) but relate to failing on exams when before I always got A's in my classes. It is very frustrating and I can't figure out if it is me or the professors not doing a good enough job of teaching us prior to exams. Like you I had a low grade on an exam and then an issue in the clinical portion and I was so hard on myself. It took a lot to keep showing up and not giving up. As you mentioned I tried to learn from what went wrong and it takes a lot of mental strength to just move on from it and not let it fester in your head and throw you off your game.

as a dentist for many years now, iatrogenic damage during treatment is something that happens in live patients as well. It's good to experience your shortcomings. the problem with dental school is the moment when it really counts it needs to be perfect. Maybe the take away for you is to manage patient expectations. Practically, always make a pre op xray for your endo's

Yeah, endo is hard, Specially on extracted teeth. They are already dehydrated and the canals are bound to be calcified, irrespective of the person’s age when the tooth was extracted. I’m an internationally trained dentist looking into getting my license in the US. That means I have to go thru 2-3 years of dental school again in the US, and I was so excited about it. In preparation, I’m taking an advanced dentistry course at my university. My endo professor is so tough on us! I have to do 2 RCT in each tooth of the mouth, just finding the extracted teeth was an enormous task in itself! And I’m also prepping to take the INBDE, right now I’m studying pathology 😢 I had forgotten how demanding dental school is! All the homework on typodonts plus the studying! I’m actually questioning my decision of going back to dental school…

Me too. It gets you down so bad rt?.... I'm going at a snails pace at restoration compared to my peers. And its with patients. I'm still afraid that I'll do iatrogenic damage or get a pulp exposure. My profs & patients all say I'm slow. Idk... Only my chair gets jammed, only my allotted patients ghost AND I'm slow at cavity prep... I feel like I'm lost & hit a plateau.

You said you wanted to be a general dentist, any reason why you don't want to be an oral surgeon? Trying to figure out which one is better. Great video, by the way.
@stephenraydentist
@stephenraydentist Жыл бұрын
I will be making a video about why general dentistry! I definitely want to talk about this decision in much more detail. But to give you a quick answer, general dentistry offers me the opportunity to do a large variety of things in my dental practice daily. I can do OS, endo, operative, prosthodontics, and cosmetics/sleep/implants etc. There is a just a great opportunity to do a lot of different things in GD as opposed to a specialty in which one does virtually the same procedure over and over again for their entire career. I also will really enjoy getting to know each of my patients as opposed to seeing them once because they were referred to me and never knowing anything about them!
