My neighbour asked me if I could start her car a few weeks ago. Took battery out, put the charger on, only it would not charge it! Checked it with a multimeter and it was 0.0V. Like you, I've never seen such a thing before.

Strange eh? And these modern chargers have polarity sensing so you cannot put the leads on the wrong way - So if the battery is 0v then it thinks the clamps are not on

Just got an old charger from the recycling centre, you're not supposed to take anything from there but there's no one to stop you 😊 it must be 30 years old but works like new after i put new leads on it. Old stuff was made to last and I'm sure it would charge anything, its also 12/24v. Im never going to get rid of it 🤗👍🇮🇪

I could never understand recycling centres - we have them here when the original idea was you could take things that were useful to you, and prevent stuff going to land fill - all changed now - forbidden to take anything

@BritannicaRestorations it's a commercial thing now, more weight means more profit for them and they get a brucie bonus from the government for all the good work they do 🙄 Seriously if they were interested in recycling, all they'd have to do is get you to sign a disclaimer saying you won't claim off them if it goes pear shaped....

Exactly - I see so much good stuff thrown away that with a bit of a fix will make it have another life. I used to pick up power washers off the side of the road that were put out for the annual big rubbish collection - pick up 5 maybe, get 3 to be reused - I gave them away, but folk thought it was a scam, so no more

I have been through this before. The problem is, most modern chargers are INTELLIGENT ( more stupid the way I see it) and like you well said, it has to have some charge in it for the charger to start working. So what I have is a large power supply 230Vac to 12 Vdc and with this I can charge a dead battery. I want to add a cut out so not to damage battries by over charging but so far it has been great.

Have had to do that a few times most digital chargers need a reference voltage above 8-9 V otherwise the won’t work. An old ‘Ocean Boiler’ charger doesn’t care but nuking a battery isn’t the greatest thing. Doing it they way you’re doing it is relatively gentle and should bring a battery around again without further damage..👍🏻

Seen this once about 20 years ago, I hadn’t used my Vauxhall Carlton for 2 weeks but it started fine- not an easy start either as I forgot I had fitted a manual choke conversion until after the first 3 tries, so plenty in it then. Drove 200 motorway miles and stopped at services, not even enough to work the interior light when I turned it off. AA man’s meter read 0v, new battery and checked alternator and it was fine so battery just died on that trip. Less than 3 years old too so got money back under warranty. Never seen it since.

It does beg the question, how old is that battery? Anyway, thanks for the video, very interesting that the charger didn't recognise either it was a battery or it was connected. Lovely simple solution.

Battery is 3 years old and a good Interstate brand - When she first said the car would not start I was puzzled - so I got the multimeter out and zero! Tried an old analogue meter - nothing So got 70% charge into the battery, and she left - will be waiting for a call tomorrow! LoL!

Did you find out why the battery was completely flat? I find the modern electronic battery chargers with not charge a very low battery, but the old type transformer chargers with a meter indicator usually work. Stay safe! Chris B.

0 volts? A total discharge? I wonder if it has any fluid in it. Had a battery quit when I went into a convenience store to get a bottle of water and when I came out, my truck wouldn’t start. Even that had 5 volts left.

Totally 0 volts - that is why the chargers would not work - the 'smart' chargers think the clamps are not connected - hence jump from a charged battery and then charge - seemed to work!

Technically speaking, no battery is actually ’flat’. Vehicle batteries are large and heavy. Lol 🤣😂🙈. Fully discharged is the correct term, but flat reduces two words to one. Ok, I will let myself out. 👍🏻🙏🦘
