Nope, the Outback Wilderness does not add lockers or limited slip differentials to Subaru's popular go-anywhere wagon-utility-vehicle, but the new Wilderness trim does add exactly what Subaru shoppers have been asking for. More capability, more rugged looks, and snazzier roof rails without sacrificing the fuel economy and ride comfort that buyers love. The Wilderness isn't a "Subaru Wrangler" and I'm fine with that.

That would be a fun video, however without the underbody protection and added ground clearance the regular Outback just doesn't really have a chance. Not with a real off-road, rocky terrain situation.

Great review. I traded my 2020 defender for the 2022 wilderness model. For all of the reasons you described. Better on road, better gas mileage, better on road foul weather performance and all the off road performance I really need. IMO this is the best northeast / Pacific Northwest / mountain town car on the market…

Yes, you DO feel like you're driving a truck vs. a SUV, but it's way smoother than I'd expect from a trucks, which "historically" have been pretty rough-riding. Question would be tires, and recalibration of the AWD otherwise XMode. I think this is a cool option, but reality is how many will dive in. The regular Outback is already capable getting to the slopes or the Cabin, so in reality, what does the Wilderness buy you versus the regular one as what gene978 wants to know and I think many others. Is this in day to day a marketing thing with some minor changes, or does it really deserved own model. Okay the final drive is shorter I missed that one. Hmmm, if this had real lockers. But even still I think if I wanted to go more off than on the road, the Wilderness may make sense.

@eskieman3948
@eskieman3948 3 жыл бұрын
I can start with the following, since I have been watching & driving both the Edge & Outback for over the past three years: 1) Driver visibility - Outback, hands down. The Edge is horrible, almost dangerous. 2) Reliability - Subaru has the edge (no pun intended), though the Edge has become more reliable over the past two years. 3) AWD - the Edge's AWD system is OK, and certainly helps in bad weather, but you don't want to try the backwoods driving that you can do with an Outback. Even Ford will tell you that. 4) Handling - I'll say that the Edge has the 'edge' over the Outback. The Edge suspension is pretty good for a 4100lb crossover.

One day back in the 70s, I was stuck in a creek in my new 6 cyl 1976 Jeep CJ5. The floorboards and pedals were underwater. A Subaru Bratt with four kids (two in the rear-facing truck bed seats) came to my rescue, or so I thought. The little pickup drove into the creek bed, did three orbits around my stuck Jeep, and without so much as a hello, go to hell, how's your mother, or anything, just drove off and left me stuck. I had to walk near 7 miles to get help and didn't get home till after 3:00 am. The moral of the story: Jeep drivers are more friendly.

@@leslieangus47 It's not all about ride height. Outback is uni-body and has a CVT that is prone to overheating when pushed. These are still huge penalties in the off-road world which this model is targeting. I agree, at best this package is helpful in areas of heavy snow fall but the regular Outback is already is a beast in the snow, I don't think the extra 0.8" will change anything for the additional asking price of this model. IMHO, Subaru should have added a locking diff and a better crawl ratio. The Passport has a 20:1 ratio and Bronco sport 18:1. But, when you just cut a few corners, that's what you can do. The CVT does not help, when it's max ratio range is 7:1. Sure, it does not need to be a rock crawler, but true low-range 4x4 have a ~50:1 ratio.

Funny thing is, quite a few Outback owners have & will do precisely that. There are several tents that are made specifically for the top of an Outback. I'll sleep in a tent or the back of the, thank you!

Best Subaru Outback Wilderness video on the Internet. If you listen closely, you will hear that the Wilderness does not give you much more than a standard Outback, and it absolutely gives you no more than the Outback Onyx XT. The Onyx XT looks graceful and has class. The Wildernes looks a bit goofy in an odd sort of way (unless you like body cladding that spills way over onto the door and a gold tag on one seat). How many of us drive up 40 degree inclines on a regular basis? And even fewer like tenting on top of their car. Besides, the Onyx XT can do that-. The Onyx has the exact same engine and power to weight ratio as the Wilderness. One other point. Driving to a trailhead is not diificult in but very few of the National Forests. The idea is to drive to the trailhead (which is what any Outback is built for)and then get out of the car and walk or ride your mountain bike (or, alternatively, ride your horse). on the trail. You will amost always see a Smokey Bear sign that says,"Trail use by foot, horse or bicycle only. No motorized vehicles allowed". The Wilderness is just marketing b.s.. Bet they are going to cost way more than any other Outback model . And you really do not want to sleep on top of your car in a tent in the trailhead parking lot (or in your own driveway,) do you? One thing is certain. You will not be cuddeling up next to a cozy campfire on top of your car. The U.S. Forest Service definitely frowns on that. I guess you could sleep on top of your Wilderness in your driveway. Right?

The Wilderness has more ground clearance (9.5”) than the Onyx, and you also sit 1” higher . Those are the two big differences.

Ground clearance..angles....tires.... different transmission... faster 1/4..under cladding...and about the same price as an onyx. I'm enjoying mine...and living in the Midwest and working snow shifts which means if it's snowing alot I'm going to work. Glad I traded my outback in for this

It still has a CVT, so no thanks.

Then stop whining, and go out and buy a vehicle with a regular auto/standard transmission, but do it fast. Within three years, 70% of all vehicles/SUVs/etc. will be using CVTs, whether we want them or not.

Eh. Not convinced you can do much of anything more than a regular Outback can do. Maybe you can handle a slightly higher snow drift better, a slightly muddier road, a slightly more rocky path. I'm confused at who Subaru things is going to buy this. Never going to lure away Jeep people, so forget that. And the regular Subaru buyers almost always elect to buy the weak, anemic base non-turbo because that's all they need to haul their kayaks around.
