This is Up Front with Simon Jordan. A show brought to you by William Hill that pulls no punches and tells it EXACTLY like it is.
Mike Dean is arguably the most recognisable Premier League referee there has ever been. The first to brandish 100 red cards, he is known for his eccentric approach, no look yellow cards, exaggerated step overs and banter with the players, there’s simply never been another match official like him.
Mike joins the show to gives his most honest and open interview to date, discussing his 23-year-long refereeing career, his struggles with VAR, relationships with Premier League managers and much more.
Expect brutal honesty, frank admissions and insight into why the new directives have been introduced at the start of the new season.

It's not acceptable to not send the referee to the screen because he's your mate and has had a hard game. That's part of the process and a basic requirement of the job so he was clearly not suitable to be a VAR ref. If your brandishing red cards or giving injury time penalties how do you go unnoticed? When you get through a game unnoticed i think it more to do with luck rather than your competence as a referee. A referee who's not afraid to make a big decision on the big stage at the crucial time is what your looking for in a top referee.

I think for Mike Dean with this one interview has harmed referees in English football more than any incorrect VAR call has. We now know that referees are making personal decisions based on loyalty to their friends to not go over and use the technology that was brought in to make them make decisions easier. If they have this kind of bias, who's to say they don't have a bias in team they want to win a particular game. Its nothing short of a disgrace. Mic up the referees, mic up the VAR assistants and let us hear the decision making process throughout the 90 min game as and when they are making them. I refuse to trust or accept any more wrong decisions from these people unless thats the case

@90jimmychoo
@90jimmychoo 9 ай бұрын
@@marshjj3788 football is no different with VAR. VAR highlights the fact that the PGMOL as a group/organisation take it upon themselves to make decision based on personal bias to influence games. Without VAR we wouldn’t have a ref in the clip above admitting to deliberately influencing a game and not following the protocols and rules he is trained to. These refs manage games that can be worth 100s of millions to the clubs involved. They need to be assessed, moderated and if they are not fit for purpose sacked. Put a microphone and a camera in the VAR room and a mic on the on pitch ref so everyone has total transparency on what they are doing as they do it. There’s no reason for that not to happen other than to allow them to continue as they have been.

I was a referee for about 6/7 years. It is fun but I was an amateur referee so I didn’t have linesman. Offsides are completely impossible to see at times. Every time where someone is through on goal and it’s anywhere near close to offside, one team is going to hate you and not forgive you for the rest of the game. Being a referee with linesman is an easy job if you like football and have common sense. It’s not as difficult as it’s made out to be. Being a linesman is tough though.

Mike Dean was a terrible referee. As for his view that he always had the balls to make the right decision, whether it was in the 1st 5 minutes or the last 5 minutes. Well he failed at St James' Park in 2011 when he did not send off David Luiz in the 5th minute,when he brought down Denba Ba who was through on goal. Furthermore he defended his decision. Question for you. What is the definition of “passing the ball” ? Because the final video image of the players positions is only the end of a process that begins with “the pass”. What measurement of that is there ? It’s like a 100 metre athletic race. The runnners can start when they like but the winner is the first across the line. The timing of the pass is ignored and only the final positions of the players is highlighted. Officials at the game very often see and hear the contact on the ball. What measurement is used for VAR ?

Nothing new under the Sun. I could go on and on about these Refs, with valid points and facts too; but any chance you create as a Team, you better take it !! Put away your chances as early as possible. Do not play with your Food. Simon, great Channel. South London !!

I dislike Chelsea but in this, you are right. Once the credibility of officials is gone, the whole system collapses and it appears that Chelsea in particular and also, Brighton, West Ham have been singled out. Webb has some really tough decisions to make.

massive agenda against chelsea. the fa final leicester handball, arsenal cup final handball, hair pulls, 3 goals disallowed in league cup final, souceks dive and save last season blatant pen and on and on and on. I remember mike dean making lampard retake a penalty 3 times due to encroachment. he scored every time so encroachment wasnt even an issue. who remembers the champs league semi and 4 penalties not awarded against barcelona. There is a you tube highlights video dedicated to antony taylors desisions against chelsea

The sickening confirmation of the lack of character; lack of will; and, worst; LACK OF PROFESSIONAL INTEGRITY behind so many VAR non-decisions... The confession I would most like to hear is from the VAR officials at the Everton V Liverpool game from 3 years ago when Pickford committed GBH on Virgil Van Dijk, doing a wrestling body-slam with his whole bodyweight on the guy's upper thigh, smashing his knee. No review for dangerous play despite scream accompanied by un-natural body-movement indicating serious injury as that would have meant sending off England's goal-keeper.

The knock on effect of his corrupt decision to not send Taylor to the monitor is terrible, that was a massive pivotal moment for Chelsea and tuchel. Tuchel ends up losing his job , chelsea having had a excellent performance against spurs and deserved to win are denied a win, tuchel loses his job and Chelsea end up with porter and en up the season in 12th

On reflection, Mike Dean has owned up to a poor var call and told it as it was. Would people prefer to live in ignorance debating that missed decisions were just poor eyesight? Now that it's out in the open, we all know better and should add the right pressure on var officials to make a decision. Simon got Mike Dean to finally reveal what most people thought anyway so was a good interview.

Look we're all human so we should acknowledge the emotions that we all feel in difficult situations, whatever that may be. And he admitted he couldn't do the job because he essentially couldn't control his emotions, so he's agreeing with people calling him out. BUT, the gravity of the situation is undoubtedly enormous and the set up regarding how refs are trained is clearly not good enough when something like this can happen.

On Mourinho: the decisions against Roma in the final were absolutely baffling. The behaviour of Romans after the final may not have been good, but considering the team were treated wrongly over and over again during the season. The final of the Europa league was the cherry on top. A handball at 1-1 around the 80th minute not given. Speaking about Mourinho’s gameplan saying he messed it up conceding a 1-1 is not what refs should speak about. They need to step up in certain moments to make the game fair. That’s what we need, because as Mister Dean says himself, Mourinho shakes everybody’s hands after any game he had with him. Just do your job and all is well
