A video essay on the Japanese concept of omakase, which literally means “I’ll leave it to you.” But the word means more than that. It evokes a kind of calculated surrender to another, a leap of faith towards the unknown, and a willingness to relinquish control of a situation.
This video was a collaboration with Chang Che. Chang is a writer focusing on Chinese politics and society. He also writes on technology and Japanese politics. He is the business editor at SupChina and his writings have appeared in The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, The LA Review of Books, The Point, Nikkei Asia, and others.
