Pete was a really nice guy, he loved his fans. He was just a tortured soul. He once said he found solace being at home with his cat named Venus Pete had her for 16 or 17 years then she passed away and It really hurt him. He mentions her in the song Bloody Kisses. I really enjoy your reactions you are one of the most honest I have seen on KZfaq. Thank You

BTW if you love the low notes you should really checkout an A Capella group called Home Free. My suggestion would be to start with Man of Constant Sorrow (from the movie O Brother Where Art Thou) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y8unksWXq9zWn6c.html or End of the Road (Boyz II Men cover) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9Jzhalyq9rOXXU.html . To really hear just the bass of the group, Tim Foust, you could checkout his duet with Peter Hollens doing Misty Mountains kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r8hie7VlnNTUdYk.html . Again I leave it all up to you.

I have loved Type O Negative since the moment I heard this band back in 1996. It's an unexplainable feeling and emotion as I see you're experiencing as well. It's beautiful yet haunting and like nothing else you've ever heard. Oh, I hope you go down the TON journey and explore their catalog. They have many diverse and creative songs to select from. ✌

Marlena Michele@ I know what you mean. Me I heard this song in 1998 on the Bride Of Chucky soundtrack. The first time I heard it I fell in love with it. The whole song is great and that very last part with the louder vocals always gets me. I introduced this song to my mother 1 month ago and she loved it and listens to it frequently lol than she began looking up everything on Peter Steele. Every time I hear it I tell it Love You To Death 😅

Type O Negative songs were written by Peter Steele and co-produced by Josh Silver (keyboards)... those 2 did most of the creative work in the band's 2 decade run. Kenny Hickey (guitar) did lead vocals in Type O as well - his voice was in a higher register that u can hear on verses of the songs 'Black No. 1' and 'Profit of doom' (Listen to the band Seventh Void - he does all the vocals on their 1 album 'Heaven is gone'... the band became Silvertomb recently w/ Kenny Hickey & Johnny Kelly of Type O... Johnny Kelly also plays drums for other bands - Danzig & Quiet Riot) Peter Steele's vocals were usually deep and doom-y, but he could also spit out angst vocals like on "Unsuccessfully coping w/ the natural beauty of infidelity" or "Dead again"... His work w/ his previous band Carnivore in the 80's was a bit more NY hardcore mixed w/ dark humor (' Jesus Hitler' is a Carnivore song worth checking out) ... Steele was a huge fellow - over 6 ft tall and vampiric-looking. He was quite a character by his bandmates' recollection... a self-loathing, erratic, brilliant & charismatic individual... someone said he had never met anyone who ate, drank, or did more drugs than Peter Steele. I recall going to a Type O Negative show in 2003, and towards the end of their set, they were coming out for an encore... the crowd was screaming for more, and we could see Peter Steele on his cell phone, talking away right next to the amps, and he wouldn't come out! The crowd would start yelling again for Type O, and he was still talking away on his phone! Finally, after about 5+ minutes of chatting away... he puts away the phone and steps onto the stage and goes, 'I promised I would call my girlfriend after the set..." and then started off the last songs 🙄 He ended the set by pulling off the strings of his bass.

Blood & Fire was my introduction to Type O, so I was a late bloomer. The older I get, the more I enjoy Type O, much like Rush or Pink Floyd. Peter Steele R.I.P. is one of the most underrated, underappreciated artists of our generation, period.

"...his voice is so..." GOTH. He looks and sounds like the giant, looming vampire that he was going for. Vocals are usually secondary for me after the music, but Type O is one of those bands where the vocals are one of the defining features for me. When I sing in the shower, I'm trying my best (which is very poor) to sound like Peter Steele or maybe Glenn Danzig, so yeah, he's a cool sounding dude. I love their music though. I think you're going to like almost everything from them with some of their early work and weird one-off songs as an exception (e.g. "Kill All the White People" lol). After Black No. 1, I would vote for Christian Woman or Everything Dies, which is one of my favorites.

Check out 12 Black Rainbows. That is one of my favorites by them. I briefly knew him when he moved out to PA. before he passed. He was a very low key and intelligent guy. He had a very strong Brooklyneese accent. I believe his lowest note in any of his songs was sung on the song Nettie(an hommage to his ailing mother) and if I remember correctly it was a B1.

Just so you'll know, most vocals on their songs, are Peter, except the guitarist Kenny sings some parts on some songs here and there, with a very distinctly different, more nasally voice. Which includes the runner up song Black No. 1. There are two songs of theirs that have female vocals. Some parts that sound like a choir, is just Peter doing multiple tracks. (though they joke in the album sleeves that it is a 'Lesbian choir')

Anesthesia was nigh pinnacle TON, although the entire album Life Is Killing was a bit of a departure from their previous album (it went back to more of their harsher roots). Anesthesia was pain as Peter suffered a lot of it, romantic, family, drugs, spiritual. Whereas I Love You To Death was more a fanciful creepy erotic love song of which he has MORE of them. It doesn't however as Anesthesia. The Keyboard was a CONSTANT in their Music. Often times people mistake the guitar for the keyboard.
@JDutton13
@JDutton13 2 жыл бұрын
If these two words could be used synonymously, his voice is sultry and masculine. Each album has its own vibe. Early stuff is leftovers from Carnivore; rough and controversial. Bloody Kisses dwelved into the goth sound; October Rust (where this track is derived from) was written by Peter purely to entice the fairer sex; World Coming Down is sludgy, quite dark, and depressing; Life Is Killing Me has Anesthesia on it, but more uptempo songs like I Like Goils and I Don't Wanna Be Me (a lot of tongue in cheek sarcasm on this album), and their last album Dead Again is a bit of a mash of everything. Punkish, dark, and sarcastic. I recommend September Sun if you enjoyed Anesthesia. It's off the Dead Again album and is a sort of power ballad. Glad to see you appreciate Type O as some of us do. They're not for everyone, but as a teenager in the 90s- this band hit me in my blackened heartstrings.

World Coming Down and Everyone I Love is Dead are some of the most depressing and dark songs they did. Peter dealt with a lot of loss throughout his life and he expressed all that pain and grief through his music. He even wrote a ballad Bloody Kisses off their second album that was in response to losing his childhood cat around that time. Peter had a lot of love for his kitties. ♥️

I'd add Red Water to that list, it's one of the saddest songs I've ever heard and apparently Peter felt the same way because after they recorded it he never played it again it was too painful for him. What an amazing talent and so so expressive

As you really seem to enjoy lyrics, I believe it would be worthwhile for you to listen to Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity off the bands first official album Slow, Deep, and Hard. It's loud and bombastic, and really different musically from any of their later efforts, but the lyrical content is priceless. It's based loosely on a relationship that Pete experienced and is full of pain and heartache with a little dark humor thrown in. The song occurs in sections, so give the whole thing a chance. I really enjoy what you are doing. Please give us more🥰

About the accent/not sounding American: My guess it has to do with his impecable diction and rolling 'Rs'. Quite theatrical Broadway style. Like tought in acting and musical classes for the purpose of every word needed to be clearly heard in the whole venu. A very similar style of diction/enunciation also with rolling 'Rs' can be heard when listening to the lead singer of Rammstein. I guess it was also a more typical practice in both singing/acting and spoken word at more formal settings, up until the 1960s-70s. Listening to Sarah Vaughan or Frank Sinatra, you hear that almost overly meticulous pronounciation. I guess it can be percived as not only theatrical, but also formal/posh or even as an accent. But even if it is a bit overdone by mr Steele, it works amazingly well as a stylistic expression and ads to a mysterious/exotic identity. And most vocalists could clearly benefit from improving diction. There are hords of singers who more or less mumble, and where it gets nearly impossible to hear the actual lyrics. Allthough stylistic expression in modern music often does play such an important roll, that it trumps the need for good diction. But that said, there are even 'screamers' (or as you call them, deamons 😉), who have diction so good, that even lyrics during harsh vocals, are easily decernable.
