I followed the same path a couple years ago, excited to learn TIG welding to build an aluminum cap for my truck, with the same results as you. I gave up. Though I have plans in the future to try again. Looking forward to following along.

It was disappointing to come to that realization but I’m glad I did. Made my life a lot easier! Also makes this project much more achievable for anyone watching who has never welded anything!

This looks super sweet I’m excited to see everything you implement! I’m very far from an expert so take this with a grain of salt but I also used MiG aluminum for my first project recently and definitely really struggled compared to steel. I found the welder settings were far more particular than steel where I can mostly adjust on the fly but by the end of the project I had become somewhat competent especially after writing down what settings I had gotten decent welds for each joint type as well as each wall thickness. Like you I had decent looking welds pretty much right out the gate on flat bar and if I could do it over I would have tried to get all my settings dialed for each and all joint types as well as material thicknesses that would be used in the project especially for the thinner stuff. All that being said I’ve had no problems with the even my worst looking welds and definitely think MiG is a good choice.

Thanks man!! You are absolutely right about that I was practicing each type of joint I’ll encounter in the build after I filmed this video. It’s pretty crazy how much it varies just based on the joint/amount of material present in that particular area that soaks up heat. Luckily for everything that needs to be welded it will be 1/8 wall. I think like you mentioned, once I understand which joint needs what it should be a breeze!

looks good! i got an F150 that i have the base built for. the plan was to design it in a way that the pop up top could be removed when not in use and the base is a truck rack for hauling stuff. life happened and im still figuring it out, but looking forward on how you plan to tackle some of the design challenges and put your own spin on it.

Really interested in watching this series; I’ve also been intrigued by learning aluminum MIG welding with a spool gun. You’re giving me encouragement to give it a try. Is that model you’re showing built in Sketchup? Do you model it on the iPad or or in the computer and just display it there for the video? I’ve tried teaching myself Sketchup but can’t quite get the hang of it. Would welcome if you have any helpful resources for learning it or whatever programs you’re using. I think a lot of my own builds would be modeled similarly. Keep it up man!

Appreciate it man! I use Shapr3d on IPad! I believe it’s also available for computer It takes some getting used too to figure it out but a few KZfaq videos helped me get a simplified understanding!

This is going to be good! What program on the IPad are you using for the design?
@Adv4x4
@Adv4x4 5 ай бұрын
It’s a paid app called Shapr3D! The app is capable of some pretty awesome things that I have yet to fully understand haha. I generally use it for simple models like this! It does require an Apple Pencil to use the app. It honestly might be available on the computer too!

Just curious, Why are you going from an off road trailer to a truck camper?
@Adv4x4
@Adv4x4 3 ай бұрын
I have used the camper trailer a fair bit! Although, it doesn’t go on every trip as a trailer usually isn’t feasible in a lot of locations. To me, this is the best of both worlds. Goes where ever my truck goes cause it’s part of it and also turns into a great living space! Also, I just have an addiction to large projects and building things so I always tend to be dreaming of what’s next 😂
