Darkwing Duck was in fact another show on The Disney Afternoon along with the original Ducktales - despite both staring Ducks, they were completely separate. They did, however, share a single character: one Launchpad McQuack!

Fenton Crackshell aka Gizmoduck was a major fan favorite in the OG series. He was initially conceived as a parody of Robocop, which was just come out at the time, but everybody loved him so much that the show runners kept him all the way through the latter half of the series, letting him go on adventures with Scrooge and giving him solo episodes. They changed him up a bit in the 2017 version. Made him Hispanic American, added Cabrera to his name and made him an intern instead of accountant, but at heart he’s the same. A bumbling but well meaning duck who loves his mother and just wants to help people.

Fenton's mannerisms are pleasant because he is young, scrappy, and hungry and he never EVER throws away his shot!

Jim Cummings, the original Darkwing Duck, returns to the role here. It's one of his favorites from his legendary voice acting career, as the first time he got to create his own original character rather than taking over someone else's. A lot of fans were predictably furious that Darkwing is fiction within the show's world rather than actually existing (as was even implied in the first episode with a mention of his hometown St. Canard), to which the crew just said to keep watching.

Fenton decided he wasn’t going to waste his shot. He had an opportunity to test run Gyro's latest project and he took it.

Launchpad’s date of birth (18th of September, 1987) was the premier of the original _DuckTales_ cartoon. Also, in the original _Darkwing Duck_ Launchpad is a massive fan of Darkwing’s who teams up with him in the first episode (and subsequent series) upon Darkwing finding out that he’s a pilot.

The best part about Launchpad pulling the Darkwing figure back out is it's right after he says "I tried playing it safe'./ Darkwing's catchphrase was "Let's...get....dangerous."

I do appreciate this is the first time we really get a focus on Launchpad and why he's here. I think the creators realized they were making him just a biiiit too dumb, so they needed to focus on his good traits. He's incredibly loyal, unafraid, and puts up with stuff most robots could not, because the McDuck-Duck family is kind of insane that way.

Not only did Jim Cummings return to voice Darkwing but all the villains he fought in that sequence were voiced by their original actors from the Darkwing Duck show of the 90s.

As someone who grew up with the original Ducktales, hearing "Blathering Blatherskite" made me feel like a kid again. The new series did so well with Gizmoduck!

One thing I really do appreciate about the new Ducktales is that you can really get a sense of the triplets personalities. Just by watching the show Mosco was able to rule out one of them that would not be watching the Darkwing Duck show. In the older show they were pretty much interchangeable, except the color they wore. It really elevates the show from just a "dumb kids show" to an actual good show. Don’t get me wrong I do love the old show but in the new one they really elevated it good. You can tell they have a love for the source material.

Launchpad's birthday is the same day as the original DuckTales premiered. As someone who grew up watching the original show, i get so giddy everytime there's a small little nod or reference from it! Also really love Fenton. He's such a passionate and well meaning character!

Fenton/Gizmoduck is another one of those original 1987 DuckTales characters that just got an incredible upgrade for the 2017 show. Hard to beat being voiced by Lin-Manuel Miranda, but he's also just a much funnier and more well-utilized character this time around. (The 1987 show isn't really known for having any real character arcs.) Meanwhile, this episode really hits home that Mark Beaks (more than anything else) is a stand-in for the Elongated Muskrat, what with him presenting an ugly and incompetently assembled self-driving car while Gyro is trying to create cleaner and more efficient trains.

I hope this episode will make you like LP a bit more, he's really cool if you just give him a shot.

Seeing Darkwing here was such a tease to all fans. Showing what it would be like and then pulling the rug from under us by making it a TV episode within the show and not an actual character.

Cool fact, they got the original voice actors for Darkwing (Jim Cummings) and Quackerjack (Michael Bell) to voice their cameo's here. Both are legends in the voice acting profession, and I recommend tuning your ear to some of their roles.

The joke that the robot driver engages "Ludicrous Mode" in the car is a great nod to Tesla and ultimately Spaceballs.

With Darkwing Duck being a tv show in this show's continuity, the in-universe actor for Darkwing, Jim Starling, is appropriately named after the character's real life voice actor, Jim Cummings, who of course reprises his role here.

I gotta tell you. The reason Mark Beaks is hyper-fixated on Gizmoduck is that he noticed a similar style of machinery to his former mentor. And he noticed this because Beaks & Gearloose both learned under the same mentor. But while Beaks was quickly dismissed for lack of dedication, Gearloose came to surpass their mentor.

Fenton is also a rapper on the side - he wrote an entire musical about the life of Founding Father Alexander Ham-ilton.

In the original series Fenton's full name was Fenton Crackshell. In the reboot his full name is Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera to make the character Latin American, and he is voiced by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Darkwing Duck was early 90s while DuckTales was late 80s which is why I'm also more familiar with Darkwing Duck.

Fenton Crackshell is one of my favorite characters of the 80s show and this show, they were some significant changes to his characters like how he was McDuck's accountant instead of an intern/scientist, or his latino roots, but I think they fit the show pretty well

I'm absolutely waiting for you to react to the episode where Fenton gets the upper hand in a war by stealing the enemy sides cannons, which causes the president to elect him to be his new political strategist. I also can't wait for the episode where we met Scrooge's ex-girlfriend who manages to solo Webby and Beakly in order to lure Scrooge into a trap set up by Glomgold because Glomgolds trying to find fossils to show off at his museum. I'm especially excited to see your reaction to the episode where Lena messes with Scrooges dime, forcing him to keep it safe in a dream dimension, where Lena must face her inner demons in the form of evil unicorns and a deadbeat bigfoot creature to see if getting the dime is worth betraying a Webby doll.

Yeah, this ones real, not a big spoiler but, this Ducktales likes to reference or cross-over in ways with other old 90's Disney block shows. So far you've seen i believe references to Tail Spin (first episode mentioned Cape Suzette which is where that show takes place), and now Darkwing Duck, which was its own show and had quiestionable continuity with Duck Tales as some characters like Launchpad and Gizmo Duck were in both shows, yet I don't think Darkwing Duck ever showed up on Duck Tales back then that I can remember. So here he's an old Adam West Batman type show. The original Darkwing Duck was basically a combination of Batman and The Shadow, same with the villains being mostly combos, like one was Toyman+Joker, and the electric guy is Electro+Poison Ivy (in that he related to the bulbs and other devices and treated them like they were alive...but he was crazy, like he'd break a store window and toss toasters on the ground and announce they are free to roam the wild now. Weirdly enough there was another plant based villain but he was closer (at the time) to the Floronic Man mixed with Swamp Thing *Poison Ivy from the early 90s wasn't green and used botany gene manipulation not florakinesis).

In the old shows, Gizmoduck was the superhero in Ducktales and obviously Darkwing Duck was the superhero in his show. They would cross-over sometimes, and Darkwing HATED Gizmoduck. Darkwing was a great character because he was 110% driven by ego, and he couldn't stand that Gizmoduck was a little dopey and naive, but overall a lot more competent and capable than him.
