Hi Coach Daniel, thanks for this insight! It gave me a light bulb moment. I've been stuck in this situation with my insomnia for weeks where it's developed into a compulsion of sorts. My brain basically believes that I need someone I trust sitting on the bedroom with me when I go to sleep. When this happens, it's easy for me to relax and go to sleep for hours, and I know this is from "delegating" the sleep to the presence of a comforting and trusted person. So when I try to go to sleep on my own, I still experience anxiety and apprehension because my brain "believes" that sleeping alone is a threat. I've been working on conquering this fear for weeks now. But it wasn't until after watching this video where I realized that I was actually spending most of the night criticizing myself for not "getting it" or "still not relaxing well". There's always been some form of pressure that I impose on myself when I try to go to sleep. I'm starting to believe that maybe it was my incessant self-criticism that may have also largely fed into the anxiety-fear cycle. I know that I ultimately need to face the fear for what it is, in the end. It's just been hard mentally for me to do that. I'm hoping with this realization that I can face my fear of not being able to sleep peacefully. Sleep has been a struggle and my brain has learned to associate the act of going to sleep with hardship. I am essentially afraid of the struggle happening again, and I'm aware that I'm afraid of facing those feelings that come with it. But I also know that I'll be able to face it in the end. I know that I have to, if I want to get to the other side and get to peaceful sleep and peace of mind. Maybe the solution was just to do exactly that: just do nothing, to not feel compelled to do anything. This is hard for me. I'm realizing that effortlessness is not a result, it's a process. I am already in the process. So if I feel impatient, I shouldn't judge myself for feeling this way because I realize that I only feel this way because I care about going to that stage of peaceful sleep.

Amazing, this was exactly the type of aha moment that I hoped this class could bring 😊!! And what you said about it being a process and not judging oneself for feeling impatient for example, yes this is the way. Well said and thanks for sharing 🙏

Wow! This really resonated with me! With insomnia, I feel self-criticism in the form of frustration which probably comes from all those ways of “whacking” myself internally. I just love the concept that early morning awakenings and difficulty falling back asleep just come from my brain wanting to keep me safe, out of love! I felt so much better after watching this video. Thank you so much, Daniel!

Omg this is exactly what I needed to hear right now. I've been asking myself those exact questions, along with "Why can't I let go?" or "How can I let go?" or "Why can't I just accept that I have no control over sleep?" And I had another light bulb moment from this video - I've been feeling very stuck in my career for many years now and I just realised those same questions come up in the context of my career! I think I've made a habit of self-criticism but hadn't realised it because the questions were always disguised as an attempt to find a solution or be proactive. Thank you Coach Daniel!

Thanks Liz, and nowadays I’m more flexible still than when I wrote Set it, I think it’s like losing weight. If we chose a strict diet, there’s too much pressure and it’s not sustainable. If we change our diet as a permanent thing, then it’s just a new lifestyle, something that’s fine indefinitely. Whatever feels like “this is what I did before I had trouble sleeping, no pressure, I can have this as a loose routine forever” that’s nice 🙂

Happy New Year Daniel, thank you for this video. This is sooo true for me & interestingly enough I havent even wanted to admit it to myself! Having had a battle with sleep last night, I have made my New Years resolution to be kind and compassionate to myself. This is a very hard painful road to walk. It is so much about our relationship with ourselves. I also wanted to thank you for sharing the videos with Andreus where he points to awareness and observing of self so that we stop identifying so much-- we are not our thoughts ! This requires time and patience especially if we have been experiencing a struggle for a long time and have ingrained thought patterns. In a sense we cause our own suffering .....This is very hard to accept!

Hello DANIEL, I would consider myself stuck at this very moment. I’ve been in your program for approximately a month and a half watched hundreds of hours of your videos and thoroughly understand your teachings yet still having trouble finding consistent solid sleep. I often times get 3 to 4 hours with a handful of times within the month and a half. I have gotten 7 to 8 hours sleeps and the rest have been quite hard long sleepless nights. I try my best not to look at the clock but I enjoy using my phone I am 95% less hyper aroused than I was before your program which is amazing! But however still can’t get over that hump. I lay in bed calm with A brain that will not shut off. I’ve been hyperrouused for about a year and a half which is caused insomnia and it is now gone but I still can’t seem to find sleep. Is is it common for your program to take a little while before you begin to find consistent sleep? Thanks DANIEL I appreciate all your work
@thesleepcoachschool8192
@thesleepcoachschool8192 8 ай бұрын
Hello back 😊! Thanks so much for asking and you know, the first thing I’d say here is that I’m really glad the hyperarousal is fading. This can seem like not so much to be glad to see when there’s not more sleep happening… but we’ve seen sooo often that this is a step that happens before we see sleep come back. Often it’s from curiosity, “my hyperarousal is so much lower, I wonder how they will affect sleep?” - wondering itself often keeps us awake, until we no longer wonder why because we know. And yes, as you’ve probably seen in the program (I’m assuming you’re in the immunity program as you didn’t say “app” but correct me if I’m wrong) we have students who graduate in a few weeks, and we have students who decide to stay for longer… it’s super super normal to experience what you are. And I’m glad you saw this video, because often the thought that we are doing something wrong or should be further along keeps us from the peace we’d like to see. And we find it thanks to the willingness to learn and do som heart work which you clearly have. Hang in there and let us know how things go, so glad you found our little ecosystem and that what we teach has made sense 😊

Hi Daniel My sleep drive seems to be dormant as no matter how late it is I don't feel sleepy when should I go to bed if I don't feel sleepy?
@thesleepcoachschool8192
@thesleepcoachschool8192 8 ай бұрын
Hi Liz, Thanks for asking, there is one common observation here about how sleep drive seems to vanish, and then the question of when to go to bed if we don’t feel sleepy. For the observation, check Insomnia insight #356 where we talk about what we call the Bermuda Triangle effect. As for when to go to bed, the tricky thing is that when we look for cues, like sleepless, the looking itself keeps us from feeling sleepy. What helps is often to go to bed when we feel like it rather than based on cues. Just like we go to the dinner table when we feel like it rather than when we have the ideal level of appetite - looking for ideal appetite would make us anxious and keep us from having appetite. More on this in Insomnia insight #500. Hope this helps, let us know how things go 🙂

How is wondering "when will this be over?" be an act of not being kind to ourselves? Can it be an innocent query?
@thesleepcoachschool8192
@thesleepcoachschool8192 8 ай бұрын
Hi! I’d say it’s when we use “I” or “Me” that it tends to be disguised self criticism. I we said “why can’t I make this be over” it’s tricky. But just wondering when we will see tings ease up, I don’t see self criticism there 🙂

My Wife disagrees and says i slept longer as she was calling my name a few times of the night. Can you please cover the topic as to why sleeping well every second night or few nights and others nights not sleep well.?

Hi coach, after watching your videos I have learned a lot. But I also wonder if ACT is better administered while doing sleep restriction therapy. I think a regimen, a schedule and boundaries are needed to get back and develop longterm sustainable sleep. Would love to hear your thoughts?

So glad you’ve learned here 😊! And you know, I think of the traditional CBTi approach as structure + attempt to control. The structure part can definitely help, because it can keep us from chasing sleep. The attempt to control I think is really tricky. We have our timeless sleep window with we can think of as structure + invite to leave attempts at control. So this really is a combination of ideas from CBT and ACT. If you check the This is Natto playlist, link in the description of any new video, you’ll learn more about this 👍

@gerk7238 so glad it made sense 😊 and my short answer: totally fine. It’s exactly like you said, when we think “oh no I slept!” or “I must not nap to preserve sleep drive!” - that’s when there’s some struggle. More on naps in Insomnia insight 370. As for the timeless sleep window, I think it’s like diet vs lifestyle for weight loss. It’s nice to start with something we never need to change, something flexible and doable. Like okay, I’ll not check the time after 10:30 pm and get up around 6 for now. It’s like what most people do anyways, because tweaking often leads to monitoring and some struggle. It’s so nice of you to ask about contributing 😊!!! If you’d like to get a copy of Letters to the Natto Nation and be the first ever person to review, that would mean so much. There’s also a Patreon link in the description, I’ll give you a shout out if you sign up there 🙂 Be well now and be in touch!

@@thesleepcoachschool8192 about to get your new book, happy to show support! And will make sure to review! One more question - I was looking for the success story that would best Resonate me and I found Alexander. What a great episode! I wish you guys went more into specifics and talked longer. Specifically about his journey and mindset during his time from implementing and where he started to see progress. Sorta touching more on the ups and downs of that initial stage. I know that’s the hardest time, I think I’m in it now. Where your mind is ready and you’re emotions are changing for the better but you’re still struggling with the sleeping, which I know takes time and patience. Is there a success story you would suggest I watch? And does the book have these types of examples?
