End of an Era. I was lucky to go back in 2005 thanks to a friend who worked at a game shop. It was a really cool experience seeing something the public was only able to watch through videos or print media. I remember watching a teaser for the cancelled Starcraft Ghost game, the Gizmondo handheld booth, Tecmo showcasing DoA 4 and Ninja Gaiden. Also all the cool free swag from the different companies there. Fun times, RIP E3.

Growing up my cousin and I would rush home from school to watch E3 because we were hyped to see what the year will bring gaming wise. Now with all these shows, you gotta wait to see every 3 months what’s going on. To answer Matt’s question, I preferred getting everything in one day

I think E3 was a collective, momentous experience to gaming. You were able to mingle within the industry, rather than the company/fanbase. The arbitrary annual deadline, while likely contributed to the seemingly industry standard of unethical practices on developers and alike, provided a competitive playing field to deliver something at the same time. Akin to going to a festival or a concert. The festival provides more relative experiences outside of the artist that brought you there. The concert offers the singular reason why you're there, often delivering a more concise, intimate experience. But this is from a now outsider peering in. Choose your preference.

I think Apple changed the perception of this by the hype around their own events. Like you said, companies can control the narrative and invite people to their campus.

Nintendo direct style videos also started hurting E3 when companies realized they could put a pre recorded video out and still get the same reach with a fraction of the cost.

Yeah you make a great point and I think now that the Microsoft acquisition of Activision has been approved, you will probably now see a xbox , Bethesda, Activision Blizzard press conference. You will now have a lot of hype around that press conference since they have call of duty and you will see them doing their own thing with games from those separate companies being showcased. Just like playstation and Nintendo would be doing their own things with their own games showcased during their own showcases.

It's funny hearing you say "the audience listened to one press conference and then HAD to walk to the next one." Man, that was the fun of it. I understand the financial reasons why conventions are dying, but the smaller online events will never replace the spectacle and fun of the large shows. RIP to an incredible era.

They should do a comic con type of E3 2.0. One with Panels to ask questions to developers and actors as well, that is not a type of event you can do online easily and it gives reasons for videogames fans to go, and they bring company interest on the event itself and they will want to do announcements as well.

I think the thing I'll miss the most about E3 is the big collective of gaming news being showcased. A bunch of fans of gaming getting to come together to be excited about a bunch of news all at once - and often times having something for EVERYONE. It's a shame that E3 doesn't get to go out with a bang but instead of a whimper. Like many people have already said - it's truly the end of an era and that just...sucks. At the very least, we have clear replacements and options to replace it. Stuff like the Game Awards or Summer Games Fest or Toyko Game Show. There is still those "big" events that fill the void - just not as historically *cool* as E3. So long E3 - you'll be missed

Just to clarify the diablo 4 beta statement, the KFC deal was only for 1 weekend. The following weekend didn't require the purchase of a double down. As far as E3 goes, I always caught the cliff notes version anyway. The suspense and shenanagins in between always bored me; so no skin off my back.

I couldn't agree more with Matt. I miss when consoles, games, and just tech in general would come out of nowhere. No leaks, just BOOM! ITS HERE! Literally nothing comes out now without leaking and being spoiled weeks, if not months in advance, there just no more mystery to what's coming next these days.

For me, E3 holds a special place. Not going to E3. I sadly never got to go. Never could afford it. But watching E3 on G4. Or watching it on KZfaq. I did live coverage of it at my college back in 2017. Having a big event for us was special. Leaks suck but I also avoid leaks. The game awards aren't the same as E3. E3 was all about announcements and surprises. While the Game Awards has so much fluff and downtime. E3 was a week long. You watched the press conferences you liked or just kept it up in the background. I remember losing my mind over Resident Evil 7. Losing my mind over Crash coming back. The Smash bros announcements (which to be fair weren't just at E3). I loved E3. I still do. The world keeps steadily moving towards everything being decentralized and fully digital. I get going digital is cheaper. I get that they don't want to spend a million on a presser. But the spectacle of it all. E3 was basically Wrestlemania for Video Games. It's where new generations started. Like they used to cover E3 on TV. I don't want to be drip fed news over the year. I liked when companies waited till e3 to announce stuff. E3 will always be special to me. But the major players in the industry have decided that it must die.

The Series S thing was wild, I still remember seeing everything at like 3am in the morning and then the Xbox account just posting that shifty 👀meme, was hilarious. Hours of memes about speakers or drive thrus just like the X before being compared to a fridge. But yeah, it's basically the same thing in general tech now too, why bother holding a big conference like WWDC, Google I/O, or Samsung Unpacked when you can do the same announcements and sessions for way less money digitally online, no need for the in-person part. The only thing that in-person still helps for is the networking/private meetings side of it but even that is fading away cause of Meet, Zoom, Teams, etc.

As a viewer, I liked the E3 format as it was like Christmas for gamers, you had this one week where the entire world was hyper focused on games, you watch the press conferences and get hyped with the live audiences reaction, and then read about excited game journalists hands on experience with newly revealed games and you feel excited with them. Now it's Geoff Keighley, and to be honest he's kind of boring, and doesn't get me hyped, on more than one occasion he's actually managed to put me to sleep.

From what it is now adays is that Social Media has taken over E3. To the point where these hardware and software developers/publishers post on their own pages about these new software/hardware that's coming out. Again with Nintendo Direct it's like now a monthly thing where Nintendo announces new games that's coming to the switch and other Nintendo news. But some of them are the big ones that announces some good anticipated games and even major console updates. Nintendo direct almost seems like the new version of Nintendo Power. But with E3 coming to an end these gaming companies might have to go back to CES for all their announcements.

Austin is right everything seems drip feed. I loved the craziness of e3 and knowing I was going to see a lot. I feel the excitement around games is missing without, because its not in a one mega event. I just feel the real hype is not there. I work in Entertainment, we have expos like LDI, that are not just highly attended, but necessary... in our industry you need to get hands on experience with new equipment before your company will buy it. And these companies, like Rosco, ADJ, Chauvet, Martin... they are more than willing to go to these Expos, where they sell nothing, because they lead to contracts on new equipment in the millions of dollars. Yes, we get emails and online shows of the equipment, but in the world of live entertainment, basically no one will buy anything new without seeing it first.

The reality is that people in Gen Z realize why would we need to drive miles away to see E3 when we can just watch it at the comfort of our home. People who didn't grow up in the early Gen of gaming don't understand the whole picture: back in the 90s early 2000s this was the only way to see the latest releases and it was the best way and only way.

I prefer a "one stop shop" so to speak for all events each year. Bring it back to just 1 show/event. I don't like it spread out because I wouldn't want to find out about one first then sit in anticipation for the competitors to host an event to receive the rest.

E3 2.0 is already here, in fact it was like 2 weeks ago: It's PAX West. These types of conferences were always just conventions in disguise, and so the consumers drifted towards the better convention. It's a lot more fun as a consumer to have things to do vs sit for 4 hours in-person and get preached to by video game companies, especially in this video conferencing world. It makes no sense to buy a booth when everyone's watching on Twitch anyways.

So, video games and consoles used to be the bleeding edge of technology, so these events are amazing because you see the newest, latest and greatest. As gaming advancements become more incremental, because the technology is so advanced, and for most people it's now 'good enough', the 'magic' of these big events fade. For technology that's bleeding edge, these big shows may still work as a display of the latest and greatest.

Its dead because there will never be a time like 1994. We had Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Sega, Atari, Commodore, 3DO, NEC, + others all showing off their life changing miracle machines that gave you actual WOW! moments. Now its just the same stuff with new scams. back then every console ran games completely differently and the leap from 2d to 3d was a big thing.

Yeah, but still in conventions like e3 the end consumer also got to see and perhaps even try new stuff(games etc) when we go(back) to closed events you're closing off the end user again from these. I don't think xbox and sony are gonna open huge events on their side and let just anyone in. It would not make sense on their side to crowd their events with end consumers. Then it is just going to be media, biggest streamers and some industry heads there.
