Spring is arriving which means I MUST CLEAN AND ORGANIZE. My body has plans to accomplish and I cannot resist them. I've been taking note of the little things around the house that still need to be dealt with, and one of those things was my unused pendant light slot above the toilet! Is that really so important? No! Not at all! But it was on my mental list of things to do nonetheless, and I had an idea for it. It ended up being a fitting season for me to make a sakura-inspired pendant light, though that was entirely coincidental. It's an easy project as long as you don't try to make it out of PET like I did. Hope you like it!!

PET doesn't have many bonding agents to its name. It's the reason you see it used in bottles and recipients so much (bonding would imply it can be melted chemically, so that would be bad if you have many chemicals melt it). One method, that might work, that's clean, would be to heat bond it. You'd need to get one of those model making irons (they look like a soldering iron with a tiny clothes iron on it instead of the normal sharp end) and a piece of hardwood that's shaped as the triangle you want to bond. You place your (to be bonded) pieces together, get some kapton tape over the side you'll touch with the iron, then press them together. You need genuine kapton tape tho, not the cheap stuff you find on fleabay (if it melts from flame, it's not kapton tape). The iron would also be good to flatten the edges from the scissors. You run it on low heat over the edge and it will melt it just enough to make it less fuzzy. To test if your PET sheets will behave, you can take a knife you don't need (like a butter knife you might want to throw out) warm it up with an open flame then press two pieces of PET together against a piece of hardwood. Mind you, the hardwood needs to be sanded smooth with rounded edges. Any grain or defect will transfer to the PET film in the final product. Conversely, the kapton tape is there to stop the iron from melting the PET on contact before it has a chance to melt between itself, but it might not work at all as a result. For the test, you could (in theory) use some aluminium foil, but i've never tried it with foil myself, so i don't know that it would work. IMO, the sewing method you showed in the video is probably the best option, using fishing line and premade holes using a hot needle. Once you're done, it should be pretty invisible. One last method that might work, is once more tied to heat, but in a different fashion (and it's a bit more involved). You'll have to carve (yourself, or ask Jun) the flower shape you want, out of a piece of soft wood. Not balsa, maybe a less dense pine. Once it's smooth as a baby's bottom, you can do vacuum forming (using the PET). Making a vacuum forming box for a small project is super easy, and you have plenty of tuts online for the entire process. You can also 3D print (via an online service, or if you know someone with a 3D printer) the shape you want, so you don't have to carve it. You can check Adam Savage's channel here on YT, he has several videos showing a good, easy to follow method to make your own vacuuformed items. With vacuuforming, you won't need to do anything else other than cut the petal from the main shape. To give an idea of how simple the whole affair is, i made a vacuum forming table out of a sturdy cardboard box, a piece of plywood with many holes drilled in it and a junky vacuum i found at the recycler's place. Cheap and easy if you only want one project. And for a sheet of PET film that thin, you won't need to put it in the oven, a regular heatgun will do. Good luck!

Hey! My girlfriend was watching this video and I saw your questions about PET!!! I HAVE THE ANSWER!!! THE ANSWER: SOLDERING IRON!!! PET has a melting point around 230-260c depending on the formulation. If you use a soldering iron with a variable temperature control, you can simply melt the PET onto itself. It'll fuse and cool very quickly! And PET doesn't usually put off any harmful fumes or anything when melting it. It and PLA are used in FDM printers without enclosures because of the lack of fumes. Edited to add: PET has very good layer adhesion! That's the main reason this sort of method would work. The melty PET will adhere/fuse very strongly to the unmelted base layer.

It is reasonably self fruitful in cooler climates, but you can increase your yield by planting a pollinator. Fuerte is a type B, pollinator varieties would be type A such as Hass, Reed, Pinkerton. Exactly this! When she said that, I wanted to just remind her that she *did* have an original thought, it was just her own and by her own volition. Just because someone else made something similar and she wasn't the first to think of it, doesn't mean it's not 1. Original to her, and 2. Freaking amazing and very creative! It' snot like copyright infringement; you can't copy someone if you never knew they did it before you did! As someone who loves all things art, and has delved into many mediums both hands-on, and on paper, Rachel needs to hear that it's not that much common sense and more her skill as an artist. Now, that doesn't take away from how talented she is, & how second nature it is to her; rather, it really shows (especially to Jun!😂) how creative and skilled she is. It would prob take me quite a few tries to come up with flower petals that looked that good with how she bent and slightly folded them in on each other. I would be sitting there trying to cut the petals a little wider to account for creasing the paper and hoping it keeps shape!😂 Everyone is creative in their own ways, Rachel, and you absolutely have a talent for all the crafts, DIY, and decorating work you do!

Maybe instead of using PET for the flower shape, you can use wire to structure the petals/flower shapes of the lamp and use the holographic sheet and wrap it around the wire to fill the petal. It's probably easier to glue and make it more structurally sound. If you want it to be sturdier, can even use resin instead of holographic paper. Look up some wired flower resins for inspiration!

I am so glad to see Pichi doing well! :') We acquired a cat very similar to her about 1.25yrs ago. She's a bengal (probably a mix) and was dropped off at the rescue at 5 years old. She was absolutely terrified at the Petsmart the rescue we volunteer at works with, so we offered to take her in for a bit since she had an adopter lined up. Well, that fell through, but she was way too scared to bring back to the store. Then we introduced her to our cats, thinking she might need a friend for some confidence. She absolutely flourished! She adores our other cats and our dogs. I remember when you guys brought her in thinking "I don't think I could handle having a cat that is afraid of humans" and ended up in the same situation myself. Our girl Jasmine will let us pet her a tiny bit, but prefers to hang out with the other animals. I affectionately call her our roommate, since it's a bit harder to bond with her in the same way we do with our other cats. Regardless... she is a happy kitty and has a comfy life. I got a little shocked with the opening shot on a Hardenbergia violacea, which is one of my locally native plants! A lot of garden exotics here are from Japan so I guess it makes sense that you'd use our plants too!

As a chemist I am working with dichloromethane (DCM) daily, as it's such a common solvent in organic synthesis. And it's true it's toxic, but still there is no need to worry too much, or be afraid :) So simply by keeping it away from the cats, putting on gloves and more importantly washing your hands, you're more than fine. For an actual toxic effect a lot of it, which long term exposure would be necessary. I would recommend keeping it closed though, as it has a very low boiling point and evaporates quickly. As someone who knows how hot it can get in Fukuoka, you should maybe not use it in the summer 😂 So nonetheless, I like how the lamp turned out, the way it casts those colourful shadows is pretty!

I think Rachel said Bean-chan, the cat at the start; I don't think she was waiting for just food. That looked like an excellent girl who needed some pets as well.

This is like you took unicorn skins (Holo Taco nail polish reference) and made it into a lamp shade. It's so pretty. The vine brought it together by expanding on the flowery theme. Sometimes when some decor piece doesn't quite fit the solution is to add more that works with it.

I love how your creativity has bloomed on this channel: Jun with different food creations, or re-creations, and Rachel with all the built experience in wood work and artistic expression. Being that you both are YT creators, it's expected that there are probably more than a few videos on here in which you are doing a re-creation of something to balance an eventual creative-bock, but even so all the output you two have done has been so inspiring me in the years I've followed all of your channels and I hope you will have more years of exciting and enjoyable/educational videos to come. Keep going you two!

I think the lamp's end result really suits Rachel's style. It's feminine and dainty, while still being minimal/sleek in design. Overall, very nicely done even if it is a diy/craft project! 🙇🌸

I think the fake flowers really brought it together. I'm sure you could add more fake greenery/flora to the surrounding area if you wanted and it'd look cool too (you don't need it though). Love the holographic shine. Hopefully the PET doesn't have issues with the lightbulb if that kind emits heat. Overall though, I love seeing your guy's projects!! Maybe some more spring themed DIYs for your house, who knows xD

PET should be able to be heat bonded. Put a little baking paper over where you want to join it, and press an iron on it for a few moments, wait for it to cool again and see if it bonded. If not, repeat the process. The baking paper protects your iron from the plastic and vise versa. Waiting for it to cool allows the melted bits to harden back into each other, making a strong physical bond.

Been a fan for years. I’m hoping one day Rachel will have her own diy channel. She makes a lot of cool and beautiful stuff and a lot of times by scratch and Jun has his own channel on KZfaq for cooking. We get to see what he makes, hope one day get to see a channel all about Rachels artistic skills and all the sit projects she does.

I really like it! And I too am an adult who still likes rainbows; my car is gradually acquiring transparent stickers (dragonflies, mostly, and a little sun) that have the same holographic rainbow shimmer. Why not? They're pretty and subtle. I think you did a great job (and so does your cat.)

Cute lamp! You could try adding leaves made of the same thing but in green. Maybe going upwards and covering the bit holding the lightbulb? It might add some more dimension and make it more whole. Just a thought!

When I have done projects similar to this in the past, rather than gluing, I tend to cut a tab and slot or some kind of hook in the shape to avoid glue and fasteners.

I'm curious if you can shape the material with a heat gun. Possibly instead of cutting the slit in the middle to make the dome shape, you can see if you can form it with a heat gun instead.

PET (and other plastics in general) are extremely hard to glue. There's a reason we store chemicals in plastic bottles, most common plastics are very resilient against chemical reaction. The reason the manufacturer recommends DCM is because it's one of the only solvents that can attack PET. It's probably easier to poke holes and sew thread through them, or use a hot air gun or oven to make it hot (and slightly liquid) and then physically attach it to itself. Consider finding ABS sheets (If you can, it's quite uncommon) for which you can use isopropyl alcohol as a solvent.

I went to japan a week ago and while I was there I bought a couple of those string cat toys with the plastic wingy-bits that I remembered seeing Nagi love ages ago. I brought it back and my cat loves it, she's never been interested in string toys before but she was having the time of her life! So thank you for the indirect recommendation. And thank Nagi most of all :)

The light came out nice, don't worry about it looking homemade it's what you want for your home. All of us are at different skill levels when it comes to crafting, some more advanced than others. A shape like that isn't easy to achieve but you pulled it off. I liked the way it looked with two rows of petals, that would be the only thing I change about it. It came out great since it was your first time using those materials.

I agree with Jun when he asked about one of the paper prototypes of the lamp! That one has a shape I liked compared to the others. But Rachel, the end result of the flower was super pretty!! The soft pastel light of pink and yellow warm glow is so good - you are a genius!! I am also with Jun here who's super impressed with how your brain came up with the shapes using your "common sense" XD

Some cats dont like to drink from moving water at all, they prefer old standing water, the kind where you go "icky" not that it is green or something but almost. Maybe try just filling up a bowl and place it in an out of the way spot, check on it every so often and refill with water, but dont clean the bowl, some sediment and stuff is needed. Our old cat only drank out of an old watering can for our houseplants, it had green sides from all the algae and the water would stand in there for weeks at a time (i had cacti) and outside she really liked the old grungy water that almost felt slimy.
