I'm solving a problem that I have involving lightning blowing up my stuff. Watch to see how I avoid this using a smart plug with custom Tasmota firmware and a simple Python script and weather api.
Hope you enjoyed the video!

Yes! The new format lends itself well to the core values of the channel. Well defined problem with a solution that is fun to watch.

I got worried when you said you were updating your channel because I was worried you were fixing something that wasn't broken, but this was a good video! Keep up the good work!

This is a really cool idea and I like how you put it all together. It would be great as a Lightening warning for when I'm working in the yard. But you know what works a lot better and easier and doesn't cut your equipment off - a Battery based UPS. Not the cheap plug-in surge protectors (they're worthless junk) but a real proper battery-based UPS (625VA versions start around $70). Because the incoming AC power goes through the battery first, your equipment is always protected. The only downsides are 1) you need a separate UPS for every outlet location (one for your computer, another for your TV, etc) and 2) if the power goes out, they beep very loudly and if you have a dog, it will drive them crazy.

There is a thing called Surge Protective Device (SPD) available for both AC and DC supplies just install it to your main board input. It will protect you in both cases, surges from gird and thunder storms. Ps: if you want to know more about protection system I can help.

On a side note. You may want to have an electrician verify your grounding rod is correctly attached and seated. That may be what's causing your devices to short out at. Or even better. Connect a device to measure the hot, neutral, ground legs and record which spikes during thunderstorms!

very cool. I too live in FL, and even though i think this is really cool, I'm wondering how it will work out for you. Seems like it could be an annoyance to have your stuff shut down even when there's no lightning. Please do a follow up vid.

I'll be honest, when you said you were changing the channel and video style, I was concerned we were losing a lot. But this video was awesome! If this is the new direction I'm much more optimistic about it, compared to the way it was explained in the video where you said you were changing things up. Also please more hardware stuff.

Instead of listening to a weather API, listening to an API from one of those live lightning strike maps would be even cooler. A more localized radius about a location that detects actual lightning within a zone to trigger the shutdown. Nice idea

Nice video. I like the new format. Waiting for the camera to focus was slightly distracting, but to cut it off I understand you would have to do the video and voice over separately. So it's fine like this, I guess. I have some smart devices at home too. Mostly Shelly plugs, switches and heater valves. I have hooked them all to HomeAssistant plus I have some automation done in Node-Red. I have some automations which mostly turn off lights under certain conditions, cause my kids would keep the lights on all day :) I like small atuomations like this. The more sensors you have the more you can do and it's all just a matter of your imagination and inspiration :) Keep it up! Good luck!

Would probably be better with a double-pole switch/relay, I don't know how much real protection you are getting from a small relay in those sonoff switches

What about a surge protector? Any reason why those wouldn't be a good solution to protect from lightening?
@ZacKoch
@ZacKoch Жыл бұрын
I think the thought here is the sonoff is cheap. I'd rather blow the sonoff up instead of xyz appliance. Fwiw I've blown up similar devices on purpose (the very old sonoff hardwire to test the solder traces) and by accident lol For example the Shelly devices use a similar relay and while it gave up the ghost when given a 220 short straight to the dome it didn't cause damage to the circuit or devices behind it! 15 minutes and $15 later I was back in biz.

@ZacKoch
@ZacKoch Жыл бұрын
Once flashed it broadcasts an AP. Connect to the AP and put in your wifi network creds. Out of the box tasmota comes with sonoff templates you can choose it or find the correct one in the docs. Other than that maybe setting a static IP, and then you're at the same state he's in. Tasmota can do much more such as mqtt, and support a bazillion of other devices.

Would the Sonoff plug itself still be vulnerable regardless of being in a on/off state? Also, can I assume you left a geocache on Pensacola Beach? I'm heading there now with my shovel!
@ZacKoch
@ZacKoch Жыл бұрын
Yes, everything is fair game when it's connected to earth and lightning happens. Even surge protectors. The goal here was to hopefully destroy the cheap sonoff vs the expensive xyz. Normally a surge protector can handle blips from lightning and such, however depending on how violent I've seen and heard of them failing and causing damage, not that this is a solution to that, but it's cheaper than good quality surge protectors I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Cool project. But you can still fry your equipment even if the plug is off. Lightning still fries powered off equipment : ). Your best bet is invest in better surge protectors that have higher protection...or even better lightning arresters. Otherwise only way you can protect is unplug from outlet...now if you add some springs to the wall side of plug to eject the plug from wall...that would be really cool

I have a used lorex nvr box that doesn't boot which I got for $11 and I was wondering if I can do the same thing with an arduino uno r3 to install linux on it. Bought it for the 3tb hard drive to use in my security system but I don't want to just throw this tech away, would love to mess around with it or at least find a start on what I can do with it .

Many things can be flashed and reprogrammed through UART, but I'd recommend you research Raspberri Pi devices, learn how to secure one and configure it, and just plug a normal, USB type camera into it.

I am kinda bothered by how the plug's API turns the power on/off at get request, instead of post, making it too simple for someone in your network to embed an image somewhere with the local url and have your power turned off just by viewing it..
