@Rylie Voshel approach every drawing session with a goal. For instance, if you have an artist or particular art that inspires you, try drawing an image from that topic. You need to understand that art is a conglomeration of skills; you will not master everything at once. One skill at a time, and more importantly, enjoy drawing it. Don't make it like a school project; savor it.

Here's my suggestion about the epoxy resin.. SAND IT. Not just the rough grade, but you have to go up in grit until your basically just buffering the thing. Make the scratches super thin, then finish it with a polishing paste. That's the best way to get clear epoxy. Just keep rising in grits until you get to like.. 3000 grit or 5000 grit. Then you put polishing paste, rub it in and get rid of the excess. Those lines and drippies from adding the epoxy on top? Just sand them to a very fine grit then polish them. Wet sanding helps too! Also, if you want to get rid of any bubbles, either heat or a pressure pot. You COULD use a vacuum chamber, but I've seen that mess with resin before. A pressure pot(about 30psi I believe) will make the bubbles super tiny. Or, you can use a heat gun/lighter to pop surface bubbles. I see those used for thinner projects though, not... epoxy blocks. Seriously though, try the sandpaper thing. Thats your best chance at a clean finish. Check out dice makers or epoxy resin workers here on youtube, a lot of them use sandpaper. Some people commented micromesh, yeah that too! Just super fine grit, because the smaller the scratches the better

Once you've finished with sand paper, micro mesh pads go even higher grit, and zona papers higher again. When making dice, using zona papers really gets a glass finish.

Could use a heat gun or a torch, it works really well to make it smooth. If going with the torch you'd have to be super careful and quick though or it'll get ugly. The King of DIY does this when making his aquariums where it's pretty important that they're super clear while also maintaining the sharp corner edges.

Awesome project. I would suggest that you make your mold a similar shape to the end design to reduce resin waste/cost. The pigmented scraps can potentially be used together for something else and you could use the clear ones to hold up objects as they should disappear when more clear is poured on or around them (tho the clear scraps may need to have been from the same type of resin to increase the chance of not being seen after)

Really nice work! Seems like you're wasting quite a bit of epoxy with all the cutting and sanding, though, but of course, if you're making only one of these, it might not be worth making molds. I might give this a shot as well. Perhaps I'll use a UV reactive dye, and UV LED's. And perhaps a good idea, mix the leftover gold leaf with resin to get a nice golden sparkle effect?

Your second potion bottle came out Beautiful 1.Gaia's Tears potion 2. Mana potion If you had a purple gem and turn it into a Sacred Witches Power Potion for Spells and Magic that would go excellent with the witches book. I love both the potion bottles, think of the first potion bottle a very ancient potion that only the sorcerers of life magic only prepare from a sacred landmark. Mana- pervasive supernatural or magical power - a concept of a life force, believed to be seated in the head, and associated with high social status and ritual power. A spiritually powerful, influential and courageous, yet humble. Sry the brown leftover epoxy trash didn't work I'm sure it'll still be useful give it a new color and maybe turn it into a dragon scale or a earth gem attached to the front cover of an earth tome, or an earth potion that tells time and space like a sands of time from an hourglass. Hopefully once the Virus is cured we can finally get the tome of water up and ready, keep up the incredible work NerdForge. :)

You just gave me the best custom potion idea!! What if you wanted to be able to make custom potion bottles in cool shapes that could actually hold liquid?! SO... instead of making the first part out of colored resin, you make it out of a wax that melts at a very low temp so that after you cast the bottle around the outside you can simply drill the hole in the neck and melt out the wax leaving your cool shaped custom bottle!! Totally gonna try this.

There is still an issue with the 2.0 potion : you can clearly see that the "liquid" is directly in contact with the "glass" on top : you should have an empty space above the liquid to make it more realistic. But I guess it's really hard to make ^^

If you want the epoxy shinier maybe you should fill a little tray with alcohol, hang the epoxy thing above it and cover it with a glass our something. If the alcohol evaporates it will melt the epoxy a bit so it's gonna "smooth it's suface out" (I did it before with alcohol nail polish washer + fine sandpaper). Or fine sandpaper + water and some polishing with the rotary tool's polishing attachement... both can work I think.

Beautiful work and excellent ideas! I love the excitement, the dramatic (and sometimes funny) flair as you work and how you totally geek out when everything comes together... Still going to keep offering suggestions though... Seriously, get some of that slightly oily children's clay (usually called plasticene) it doesn't stick to the epoxy and cleans easily. You can also make much smaller and more form fitting molds so you use less epoxy and save a bit of money! The clay is also reuseable and you can also press buttons or other items into it to create raised patterns on your "glass"... Another benefit is you don't have to carve away all the extra epoxy, much less sanding, and the polishing is much faster and easier to get the clear finish! Also, listen to LivenUp7 in the comments about taking your polishing to the next level! Another thing I would suggest is carefully cutting your gold leaf sheets to just a bit larger then the straight surface you are trying to cover so you can get more use out of each sheet rather than a large pile of gold crumblies! More materials and less waste means you can do more awesome looking projects!!

Have you ever used a product called Novus? It’s a polishing compound to be used after you sand resin to the highest grit possible (usually ~3600), that will bring back the crystal clear window look. My husband uses it all the time in the gallery he work for to restore the plexiglass of framed works, or to restore the work of artists using resins and epoxies. It's amazing stuff, a must have for anyone working with resin. Especially since resin can get easily scratched.

This potion looked way better than the previous one. The stand also looked great. I have a suggestion as well. This is just my hypothesis but if you use both the potion and the glass with similar optical properties, there will be no total internal reflection which will seem to separate the glass from the potion, so using something with different optical properties will hopefully help with making it look better. For example making the glass part with epoxy and putting actual liquid for the potion in it. Also, you can use the gold dust to make gold shellac paint, it can be used in illumination of manuscripts. Hoping for more great videos :)

I think this came out awesome! Along with the excellent advice on sanding and polishing already posted here, I'd like to throw one thing in; when you're making these things keep in mind that completely clear glass is a relatively new thing compared to how long glass has been around. It was completely common for glass to have various warps and inclusions from the process of creating it prior to the Industrial Revolution; if you've ever seen photographs of really old houses with the original window glass you can see the types of "impurities" ( for lack of a better word) I'm talking about. So things like lines, rough/cloudy spots, etc. just make it more convincing as something made using more traditional methods.

If you want bubble free resin I would suggest looking into buying/making a pressure chamber. I use it for dice and boy does it work. The only down fall is that if you have a old silicon mold used in it with resin your object will have little spikes in it because the silicone might have bubbles in it. Beyond that it will give you that pure glass look if done right.

Takes off the mold. Sees the desired result. Makes happy leprechaun dance. Now I understand that this is how I'm supposed to celebrate good things.

The first one with polishing would bring back the color that you wanted. The sanding marks are what caused the color change and darkening.

This potion is so epic. Especially with the lighted base. An idea (if even possible) for a future potion forge: clear resin bottle on a stand that projects a potion or image into the resin… a moving potion. Possible????

The potion is absolutely amazing!!! love it!! I'm a resin artwork beginner, and I'm wondering have you ever considered using the UV resin for the coating step? It's gonna dry way faster than the epoxy resin if you put it outside (a sunny day is better but cloudy day works too). I've applied the UV resin on my own sculpture before and it turned out great
